TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
Seeing Chime's name in a post prompted this unofficial, informal survey --
How did you get your name? (I think we did this a while back, but it will be fun to hear from those we missed, as well as newer members!)
My story:
Mom already had my Westie bro, Reggie and wanted another "R" name. The name I came into rescue with was Boo Boo -- and as a TC member pointed out, I was DEFINITELY NOT a Boo Boo!
So Mom was choosing between Rudy (but there already WAS a Rudy here!) and Rufus. And when she saw more of my pictures, she decided on Rufus. But I only get called that when I am BAD BAD BAD! Most of the time it's Roo (Dr. Roo to you, Mom!), Roodie Doodie, or a dozen other vaiations of the name!
HOW ABOUT YOU??
Let's hear it!
Your pal, Dr. Roo

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
ohhh fun!!!
I got my name from an island in Michigan. My mommy and daddy got married in June 2006 and honeymooned at Mackinac Island, Michigan. They had been there 2 years before their honeymoon and loved it so much they went back! When mommy and daddy got back from their honeymoon, they moved into their new home and then 2 weeks later they got me! While they were in Mackinac Island they decided that when they get a pupper they would name him/her Mackinac Island! SO there is my story! Here is a link if you wanna look around!
I have not been to mackinac island but the pictures or so pretty! I hope to go someday!
What's your story?!

I was in a crate at the pet store and was 4-1/2momths old. My Dad thought it was terrible for any dog to be "Cooped" up like that and suddenly I had my name "COOPER". Of course I also answer to Bud, Coop, and Treat! Oh wait, Treat is not a name but I hear the word, I come a running!!!!!

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
Cayla was named after my first female Westie (Ayla) and my second female Westie (Coco). I wanted to honor them both. Sonny, well that is a different story. Two weeks after I got Cayla, the breeder called to see if I wanted another Westie. She would give me Sonny because the person that was taking care of him was getting a divorce. I waited all day for her to bring him and she never showed. A week later she called again and brought him at 11:00 pm and the story of why she was getting rid of him changed. Now he was staying with an elderly lady who could no longer take care of him. After all this, I had the feeling that the dog was an afterthought and she was lying, so I figured since he must have been moved around so much, the least I can do is let him keep his name. His real name is Sonny Boy Blue, now isn't that the silliest name you have heard? Anyway, after numerous calls to at least find out his birthday, she could not tell me except that he was 18 months old but the vet told me he was around two. So, I guess that I was right and he was just an afterthought and she probably just did not want him anymore.

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
Our Mac was an owner surrender to an animal shelter in Oregon. One day my husband took it upon himself to go and visit this shelter and when he parked his car he saw the cutiest white dog in a pen in front of the car. He talked to Jane, the lady in charge, and she said he had just come in and if he wanted him to put his name down on the list. It is a good thing he did because by the end of the week several other names had been added. Mac had to stay at the shelter for the usual wait period but my husband checked on him everyday to see if he was still there. Fran was one of the names on the list. She was there because someone thought one of her dogs had got loose. She use to go and visit Mac at the shelter every day and play with him. Back to the name. I was sitting in a restaurant eating lunch when my husband called and said it looked like Mac was ours and what name would I like to call him. First of all, I wanted Bruce but my husband couldn't see himself calling Bruce every time he wanted the dog to come to him. I looked across the street and there was a MacDonalds so I said Mac was going to be his name. The funny part of this story is. On the day my husband was allowed to pick up Mac, he passed a car with 4 westies looking out the window and he thought Mac had been given to Fran. He stormed in to the office of the animal shelter and asked why his dog had been given away. Jane said Mac was still in the pen and the lady with the 4 westies was Fran and they were all her dogs. This is the way I met Fran and also got Shayla. Shayla's original name was Shaylie but I just decided I liked the name Shayla better and it sounded very much the same so it wouldn't confuse her too much. I don't know the whole story of Shayla's life but the part I do know doesn't sound very great.

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
We raised Mickey from a pup and his ears were so big that Bob kept calling him Mickey Mouse. I told him we can't call him that so we named him Mickey D. Doodle instead. Amy was a mill breeder and in pretty bad shape with reconstruction having to be done on her insides to get her bladder back when it belonged among other things. Her name is Amelia Sue Earhart because she flew the coop (puppy mill that is). Alex was Amy's mate in the puppymill and was rescued with her and was in fairly good condition. His name is Alexander the Great because he is such a great little guy. Linda

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
My human mom is weird. Our last name is Rodgers. I have a peg leg (missing a foot not a leg) so she named me as soon as she heard about me leaving the mill and heading to a Col. Potter foster home. She told the other peeples there that if I were HER dog, he'd be called Jolly, Jolly Rodgers, since I am a pirut cairn. Jolly Rogers is de pirut flag.
Anywho, she got approved to 'dopt me and rest is history. Folks often think I am named Jolly because my tail doesn't stop wagging much but truf is, I'm a pirut cairn! arr. Jolly Rodgers
PS, some of my pack have funny names like Will Rodgers (pom) and Roy Rodgers (collie) as well as those who went before us: Buck (RIP) Rodgers and Ginger (RIP) Rodgers

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
Bailey – When Mom and Dad were approved to adopt me they were told that I didn’t have a name, so they studied my icture and brought a list with them when they came to pick me up. I was in my crate and they called to me and ignored all the names until they got to Bailey I liked that name so I came out of my crate and greeted my new mom and dad. So in a way I got to pick my own name.
Gracie Lou – I got my name, Gracie Lou from the character played by Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality. I was unkempt and my manners were just not very lady like. Over the course of time I went from a dirty duck to a lovely swan, but do not get me angry, you won’t like me when I am angry. I have what mom and dad call my ugly face and it is not pretty to witness.
Tuffy – I was named by the folks from Oklahoma Westie Rescue (OWR) who rescued me. I was the runt of and the sole survivor of my moms last litter. At five weeks old I didn’t even weigh a pound. It was touch and go a few times in the first days OWR had me, but in true terrier fashion I pulled through and I have lived up to my name ever since.
Shayla – I got my name in the same manner as Bailey. Mom and dad picked a long list of names and the name I most responded to was the one I got. I like my name it sounds so exotic and rare, but then so am I.

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
We decided long before we got Daisy that she would be Daisy Mae, what better name for a feisty little girl Westie. Luckily when we went to pick her up, the name fit her perfectly.
Now Sissy had a completely different name, she was to be Annie Rose, but in the days and weeks to follow she just became Daisy's little Sissy, so she is Sissy Rose.
BeeGee had no official name, I forget what Fran and others called her. On our way home from picking her up, my GD who was holding Beege in the back seet ask what we would call her. She said, " She really is a beautiful girl Grandma." That became her name..Beautiful Girl or BeeGee. You know what? She really is a beautiful girl.
So that's how they got their names. xxxxBetty and the Girlies...

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
My mommy wanted a pup like me for a looooong time! She even clipped pictures out of catalogues and magazines--- they all looked like me! Anyways, she said "I will have a westie one day and her name will be Emma"...mind you this "dream" went on for years (it started when she was 18). Then on her golden birthday (the 28th of May) my grampy and grammy bought me for my mommy and daddy...she says "You are the pup of my dreams" (she tells me that every day!) Anyways, I didn't look like an EMMA --- I was a Katy thru and thru (mom and dad's favorite nick name is "Katy-Potatey Chip"...even though I've never had a potato chip...)anyways, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it! Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
Kelsey was named after a girl whom I have never met whose name is kelsey. One of my students 6 years ago went to Soth Dakota with her Grandpa over Easter break. One of the stops was at an INdian Reservation. After they came back the children at the school there wrote him some letters. She brought them to school for me to see. It was at the time I was getting ready to get my puppy after Zoey died. I was thinking of all kinds of names and almost named her Lily, Lily White, but when I saw the name Kelsey, it just clicked.
Furby came from a shelter here in greensboro 5 years ago and Furby was his name. It fit him so I left it.
Shelby got her name after many trials. I was going to call her Snowy, Georgie (after my Dad) , you name it I was trying it. When I would call her Shelby she would look at me, so she picked her name. Officially she is called: Lady Shelby of Snowy George
Kelsey is called Mary's Kelsey Girl Zoey
Furby, I call him my sweetheart.

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
Mommy could not think of a Scottish name. She was listening to a CD by Enya, so she named me Enya. Kellie was a poor little girl when we "found" her, so we just left her with her name. That's the only thing she ever had that was hers. Mishy was named in honor of Robin's Mishy. As for Eyan - while Mommy was brushing her teeth, all of a sudden she thought that if she ever had a boy puppy, she'd name him Eyan. A day later, she found her little boy. Kellie's and my quiet lives sure have changed.

My mommie and her mommie and daddie have lots of friends in Italy and go there to visit. Anyway, their friends who have a hotel used to have a really cool picher of Enzo Ferrari, the guy who made the really fast, priddy sports cars.
She thought that "Enzo" was a cool name.
My middle name is "Baruch." It means "blessed" in Hebrew. After Carbo got sick, she thought that this might help me not get sick.

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
I appeared on the scene rather suddenly, so my mom had not really had time to think about a name. I had been called Manny, but I never answered to it, and my new folks wanted something more "Scotch-y". They narrowed it down to Dundee, which is a city in Scotland, and Duncan but couldn't decide before they went to bed. My mom was so excited to have me with her that she barely slept, and when she got up the next day she said, "All night long all I thought was Duncan, Duncan, Duncan. So, his name is Duncan." That was 8 weeks ago today. I always perk my ears and pay attention when Mom says, "Duncan." Sometimes she calls me "Duncan my punkin'" or "Duncan donuts." What's a donut?

When I went to pick up Thistle, she was a tiny ball of fluff, she felt as soft as thistledown, (the white fluff left when the flower is gone.) so we called her Thistle as she is soft in nature also, but can be prickly when need be. It was also a good Scotish name.

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
My Mom and Dad knew for some time that they were going to get a Westie so they had a lot of time to pick a name. They decided on Keeley, which is a Celtic name that means 'Beautiful" because that is what they thought I was. My sister Bonnie was a rescue and her name was Bonnie. We all decided that the name fit her to a T.

MacKenzie & Tobey Maguire's Mu
Nov 07, 2007 at 09:44
|
Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
MacKenzie's AKC name is MacKenzie's Golddigger.... I liked the name MacKenzie and she is a wheaten Cairn, rather golden in color. There was a John MacKenzie, a Scotsman, who explored the gold territory in Canada in the 1800's and so she was named after him. Also my last name is Phillips so she is MacKenzie Phillips, like the actress. Tobey Maguire was a rescue who was named Max. His foster Mum, Debi, named him Ricky, but he looked like a Tobey to me, when I first learned about him. Then when we went to meet him, he was definitely a Tobey. Since I already had one "movie star" I decided he should be Tobey Maguire. He's also AKA "the peanut" which he loves..... we ate peanuts in the car on our drive back from Las Vegas on his Gotcha Day. He was also smaller than MacKenzie, and a bit underweight, so "peanut" fit him.

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
I had lost my canine companion of thirteen years and about six months later was out to dinner with friends and topic of pets came up. I knew I needed another companion and teased and said that I knew I either needed a puppy or a new vacuum sweeper to help me pick up the cookie crumbs after the grandchildren. One of the people in that group had a Westie and worked with a lady who had just had a litter of Westies. I had no idea and they set up a visit for us to meet - I thought we were on our way to a new State Park. It was love at first sight and when I first saw her, I wanted to call her Maggie (short for Magnolia - one of my favorite flowers)....but in the span of a couple of visits, Kirby seemed to be pretty appropriate. I never thought I would be lucky enought to have a Westie. My friends convinced me that there was no fee for Kirby - they lady was just so pleased to have the puppy going to a good home. I found out accidently, about two years later that when I left the restaurant that night that they had immediately made plans for me and Kirby. I know I am blessed with some wonderful friends! Thank goodness.....

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
I was named Booker by my original family because as a puppy I "booked all over the place"....when I went to live with my new mom, she kept that name but because it was not Scottish, she added McDuff....and because her Scottish friend John insisted he approve the Scottish name, my middle initial is C for him. So I became Booker C. McDuff.

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
Mom was having a hard time coming up with a name for me. She tried several but nothing seemed to fit. Sooooo, off to the store for a book of baby names. She wanted one that was Scotish in orign. Anyway, after rejecting Fiona (too many sylables), Harmony (NOT!!!), Willow (NEVER!!), she found Kyla and changed it slightly to Kayla. It fits and I love it.
Annie was a rescue and that was her name when I fostered her. It suites her to a "T". She is definitely a laid back, mellow Annie - unless she needs to be otherwise!!

My two Buster and Robin are both rescues, and had their names when I got them. I was going to change them, but Buster really fits him, he is a little buster. Robin doesn't really fit her. She is a tomboy at heart and will get down and dirty, not like her name which to me is a soft and delicate. But I felt that she had been through so much, puppy mill, rescue and foster and I didn't want any more stress in her life.

I worked with Chester for some time at the shelter, trying to make him more adoptable. I taught him, amongst other things, that his name was Chester. Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
Well, it all started when dollface read a story about a terrier that was bred by a Scottish lord or something. He said he always liked to have an earth dog on his hunts. So that's how I got first name -- Earth Dogge. She always knew I'd be called ED whether I was a boy or a girl. Thank Heavens I'm a guy, right?!
So anyway, not one to leave well enough alone, she decided I needed a last name. Something Scottish...so she picked Mulligan.
Here's the punchline -- the Scottish lord guy who said he liked earth dogs was talking about WESTIES! Not cairns! And Mulligan is Irish! Not Scottish!
I love dollface with all my cairn heart, but the woman is dippy, dippy, dippy!
And that's how I got my name.

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
Charley had that name when I found him at the pound. His previous owners "couldn't afford him anymore" and surrendered him. I call him Cha-cha-boo, Chucky-Charley-Chan, and Boo-na-bous. If I had the heart to change his name, he would have been Jack as in, "Jumpin' Jack Flash," Rudy, or Jolly (because he is!).
Emme was named waaaaayyyyy before she was even conceived! I had told my niece that I was going to get a female dog and my niece asked if she could name her... she asked me to name my female dog Emme, so I did!

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
When I was losing my Maggie, I knew I would be getting a Westie, so I started to think of names. I liked Holly, but that was the name of my nephew's girlfriend that had just broken up with him....not a good reminder. So, I came up with Jolly. I had never heard the name, and thought it was perfect. She has lived up to her name, although she was very quiet and shy, when I picked her out. She did keep winking at me, though...that is why I chose her over her sister. With Hattie...I chose a whole list of cute names and even asked for advice from all of you. Since she was a kennel dog and older...on the way to pick her up, I thought she was probably more like a little old lady, so I came up with Hattie. I love the name and it really suits her. It's a dear name for a dear little girl.

Re: TERRIERS! Share your "story!"
Our first Westie's name was Snowflake--my wife came up with that, and she was white and one of a kind. We always liked Snowflake's doggie mom's name too, which was Cricket. So when we lost Snowy and got another Westie, we named her Crickett--two t's because she's double the terrier. I named our Scottie Glinny after looking up Scottish words on line. Glinny is an old Scots word that means pretty.
