Rockport, here we come! Vote for this post

We're off to Rockport, Mass, the last weekend of May! I made the reservations last night. (Now I'm praying for good weather!)

Later on, I'm going to do some research on some things to do while there. From what I've seen, they have great whale watching trips out of nearby Gloucester Harbor, lighthouse tours, and bird-watching tours as well. I'm going to print out the info and put it in a notebook to take along. That way I won't waste any rtime while we're there trying to find out about locl attractions.

We are going to stay in Room #2 (the one I really wanted!) at the Seven South Street Inn and I'm looking forward to their sumptuous breakfasts. (Our room has a separate outside entrance and deck, private bath, and even a small fridge and microwave.)

(Several movies were filmed in that area including The Perfect Storm, The Good Son, the Love Letter and Stuck on You, Blown Away, and The Crucible.)

Roo is either going to stay with Chris & Jill, or we might board him if C&J are going away to Jill's parents' camp on Lake Ontario that weekend. I've heard very good things about a local boarder called Bonehead's.

So cross your fingers for great weather that weekend -- it's our first time away in FIVE YEARS!!!

Rockport is great! It's about 45 minutes from us, and we usually spend at least one day every year wandering around there. Lots of lovely galleries and shops to wander in and out of. Bear Skin Neck is the well-known street that people wander down, with shops, restaurants, and galleries. Clam chowdah and lobstah! Yum!

Just as an FYI - Rockport is a dry town, so if you were hoping to sip a glass of wine while relaxing, plan to bring it with you.

Also, there are public bathrooms on a road parallel to Bear Skin Neck (both streets are like piers that extend out into the harbor). If while on B.S. Neck you need "to go", all restaurant rest rooms are for patrons only, so you will need to be seated for a drink and/or snack, etc. to be allowed to use them. I know that I always try to plan ahead and be aware of where I am.

Hope this helps a little. Rockport is a wonderful town. I'm sure you'll enjoy! I would love to meet you, and if you were bringing Roo I'd love to get the boys all together.

Wow, your notes help A LOT! Thanks for the heads up.
I did read, somehere on the 'net, that some restaurants now serve wine & drinks as long as you order a meal to go with. But I will plan on taking along a favorite wine, just to be safe!

And wow, if I lived that close to Rockport I think I'd have a hard time staying away from it. I have always LOVED the ocean and it always breaks my heart a little when we have to leave it behind and go home!

Thanks for the potty info too, 'cause you know -- when you gotta go, you gotta GO!

Have you ever done the whale watching trips?

I've been whale watching off Cape Cod and I don't recommend it if you get seasick. If you can tolerate bouncy boat rides then it's worth it to see whales.

Have not tried a whale watching trip for that specific reason - I'm prone to a seasick tummy.

Have fun! I'm originally from MA, but have been in FL since 1993.

There are lots of things to do in that area in addition to just Rockport. Look at a map of the coast. There's Plum Island, Gloucester, Salem, the New Hampshire beaches and above all the "seafood." Anywhere you go for food will be wonderful.

My sister & I used to take our mother there on a day trip every year. She loved it.

It's too bad you aren't able to take your dog. He would enjoy all the walking.

Take a camera along. There are many photo opportunities. If you post some pictures,we can all live vicariously through them.

I hope you have wonderful weather.

Linda & the boys in Ormond Beach, FL

I really wish we could take Roo this time! But while I am there, I think I'll scope out some dog-friendly places -- for the NEXT time we go which, I hope, will be sooner than 5 years from now!

I think we'll be OK on the boat. I remember years ago, when I lived in Rhode Island, going along as a reporter for a radio station I worked for, on a mission to bring up a Revolutionary War cannon from the bottom of Narragansett Bay. The water was pretty choppy and it didn't bother me at all, but the smell from that cannon when they finally brought it up? Two hundred years worth of buried rot! Ewwww!

Thank you, everyone for all your tips -- I welcome them all (and more!)

And I promise to take LOTS of pictures to share!

Now, the last stumblng block is to find a good place to board Roo if Chris & Jill are not available. Hubby says he didn't like the last place we boarded him -- no specific reason, just a gut feeling, but I acknowledge his feelings on that. Gut feelings are usually pretty important and worth listening to!

Hey, Roo. Maybe you need to find that secret leaf to make you shrink so you can go along. Look carefully in your yard, you may just find some! Good luck!!

Sounds like a good idea but I'll have to move quickly because Mom and Dad have been doing yard work so the pickins' are getting slim!

What a beautiful room and from what you wrote it will be a fantastic trip. We will keep our paws and fingers crossed that the weather will not be too warm or cold and dry of course.
Enjoy.

Hugs,
