LET'S GET ACQUAINTED! Vote for this post

Since we've recently had some new members come on board, i thought it might be fun to do something we used to do in the past -- get acquainted!

Let's share who we are, who are pups are and anything else you think is interesting.

I'll start:

Cheryl & Roo --  members since -- well, at least 10 years. We're "oldies" here. We live in rural upstate NY. Cheryl is an office manager at a local church (part-time) and aspiring writer. Married to Trip who is the computer systems guy for a local plastics manufacturing firm. We have one married son and are expecting our first grandchild (Silas Michael) due on July 3. Roo is 9 going on 10, a rescue from Arkansas., who keeps us busy and laughing. We enjoy photography, bird watching, nature, and are looking forward to retirement in a few years (although that's more a dream than a definite plan!). And we have a kitty (Roo's best friend) named Holly who is about the same age as Roo & they get along great! My favorite place in the world is St. John, Virgin Islands and if I ever win the lottery (BIG time) I am going to forget all about rural upstate NY and hop on a jet and buy a villa and live there!

How about you all?

My name is Jennifer and Katy is our pup.  Jason is her daddy :)  Katy and I have been members for about 4 years.  Katy is going to be 5 on Friday. I got her as a golden birthday present from my parents about 5 years ago.  Katy is our only child (she is in our wedding pictures at 7 months old).  I am an elementary music teacher in MN's largest school district.  Jason is a musician that plays with the MN Opera Orchestra and also gigs around the Twin Cities.  Katy is the dog that I have always wanted.  Even though she has allergy issues a fussy tummy and a bum knee - she is the pup of my dreams and to us she is perfect!

Deb and Kelsie--members since 2005 but it's just been in the last couple years that we got up enough nerve to actually start posting things. We live in Central Pennsylvania and I write for a weekly newspaper in our county and also for a regional magazine--Common Ground. You can see our picture if you go to www.commonground-pa.com and look under storytellers. My husband, Gary, took early retirement from PennDot where he worked as an equipment operator. We're big into the environment, our property is certified with both the National Wildlife Federation and the Audubon Society. We are also members of the local birding club.
We never had any children and Kelsie is the light of our lives. She has brought such joy to us. The little imp loves to steal hankies and go for rides in her Daddy's truck. She's been on 3 Dog Fancy Calendars over the years and she and her nemisis, Miss Maisie (the cat) are featured in the spring issue of Common Ground Magazine.
In October, she was diagnosed with cancer and we were crushed when we heard the diagnosis but she's still here with us and enjoying life so we take it one day at a time. We've met so many wonderful, caring people here at the Terrier Club. We are so thankful for them all.

Geez, I forgot--Kelsie was born on July 24th, 2002. We brought her home on September 11, 2002. She weighed all of 2.3 pounds at the time. It seems like so long ago and then it seems like yesterday!

I am Debbie and my three little Westie girls are Belle (Isabella), Treasure, and Olivia.  I currently work as an OR nurse.  I have three grown children and three grandchildren that I adore.  All of us love our spend-the-nights and I always love to try to choose a theme to make the night extra-special.  My pups and I love to make little books for my grandchildren.  They so patiently let me take tons of pictures of them dressed up and doing fun little things.  I then make up a story to match the pictures.  The grandkids just love their little books and we often plan our little parties around the books we make.  Belle, Treasure and Olivia think it's just the greatest time in the world when their three little friends come over to visit.

Belle will be 12 this year and Treasure and Olivia will be 5 in about a month or so. We've been members of TC for about 4 years.  We also love to go on lots of walks and camping.

If we were to suddenly become wealthy we would probably move to the mountains of Tennessee and travel to around the country taking lots of pictures and going for lots of nice long walks.

My name is Patte, and Zoe and I joined TC in August of 2008 when Zoe was almost a year old.  I stumbled onto the site while searching for terrier information.  Zoe is my "healing angel".  She healed my broken heart after I lost my almost 13 year old Yorkie in August of 2007.

I'm a licensed insurance agent and work part-time for a State Farm agent about 15 minutes from home.  My husband, Stan is in sales for a company that sells and services batteries and chargers for forklifts.  We have two children who still live at home...our daughter Kristyn is 27 and our son Geordan is almost 24.

In November of 2008, we adopted our Cairn Terrier, Tucker from Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network.  Tucker is a Missouri puppy mill survivor and absolutely the sweetest little guy we could have hoped for.  He and Zoe get along great...that's only because Tucker knows Zoe's the boss...teeheehee.

In September of last year, we became Westie Rescue of Tennessee volunteers.  I'm now doing what I know is my calling.  And, I am SO very thankful to my wonderful husband for being "in it" with me. I LOVE helping these little lost, homeless, mistreated, forgotten Westies to find their perfect furever homes. There is just nothing like the feeling we get when we place one of our fosters into the arms of their new Mommy or Daddy....it's AWESOME!

We LOVE The Terrier Club and all our friends here!

Re: LET'S GET ACQUAINTED! Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

I am Mary and I have Kelsey, Shelby & Abby. I have been a member here for almost 11 years at least. I first joined with my angel westie, Zoey, who died tragically in 2001 at almost 2 years of age. That led me to Kelsey thanks to 2 tc members who had her parents and a beautiful litter of 5 pups.

I am originally from Boston, New York, which is 20 miles south of Buffalo. I lived in Asheboro, North Carolina for 2 years and moved to Greensboro, NC in 2003.
I am a teacher, 2nd grade now.
I taught in a Catholic School in Buffalo for 19 years and moved to NC to take a job in the public school system here. Have been in NC 10 years now and love it. I don't miss the western new york winters at all.

I got Kelsey, Westie, in 2001, about a month after losing Zoey. She will be 10 in April. I had Kelsey about 2 months before I got the call about a job here in North Carolina.  While I lived IN Asheboro, I adopted Furby who was a Corgi/terrier mix and a real sweetheart. He was called "Da Furbs" by all is pals here at tc and was an honorary member. He went to the rainbow bridge in 2009.

In 2006, about a year after my Dad passed away. I found Shelby who will be 5 in July and a westie as well. She is the sweetest little girl and loves to give kisses.

Last year at Easter time I saw Abby, cairn terrier, who is about 18 months old now and a real cutie pie who steals your heart at first arooo.

I can;t imagine life without any of them and they sure do show so much love and make me laugh often.

I am already in a warm climate so to speak, so I probably would stay here, sell my house and buy a smaller one around here . I miss my family in NY, brother and sil live in the home we grew up in. I love to visit but am glad to be here. at least when it snows it doesn't stay long and you can have 80's in March..

I am Cheryl and I have two wonderful westie boys named Alex who is 6 and Morgan who is 4.  Rich and I moved from Massachusetts to North Carolina almost 7 years ago and bought a gentleman's farm.  We have 3 horses, and had 23 cows, but we just sold all the cattle last fall - our herd was getting to big so we sold them all to a man who wanted to increase his herd.

I worked in healthcare for 27 years and took an early retirement four years ago.   I've been busy since we moved my Mom in with us a 1 1/2 ago after my Dad passed.  Its been a joy having her around.

My favorite place is Naples, Florida where we have a home.  My bucket list includes a cruise to Alaska, a trip to Scotland and Italy, a weekend in Charleston SC, and of course New England where all rest of the family lives.

Hugs

Cheryl andd Alex and Morgan

Toto^^ and I (Joanne) have been members for about 3 years.

I had mentioned to my sister who lives in Poughkeepsie, NY, that I was thinking of getting a Cairn terrier as my next dog after my 10 year old Black lab-German shepard mix passed to Rainbow Bridge.  My sister was admiring her neighbor's dog and asked what kind it was; when her neighbor told her it was a Cairn terrier, my sister told her "oh, that's the kind of dog my sister wants."  Her neighbor replied that I could have Toto with his crate and all 20 tennis balls!  I debated but ended up welcoming Toto^^ to our house and hearts :)

Toto^^ is now 7 years old and Mattingly has now been gone 2 years.

We live outside Marathon, NY -- home of the Marathon Maple Festival!!!  I work as a receptionist in a doctor's office.  After I turned 45, I began learning how to play the bagpipes; I am now a member of the Mohawk Valley Frasers Pipe Band out of Rome, NY.  Last year, I started competing solo in addition to competing with my competition band.  I also enjoy quilting, knitting, crocheting, and counted cross stitch.

Hi  My name is Sandy and I am originally from Montreal, Canada.  I moved to Maine 11 years ago when I married Jerry.  He is currently retired and has been a State Trooper and long time carpenter.  I am an office manager/assistant for a financial advisor and love the job.  I am months away from retirement and can't wait - I plan on taking up quilting and may look into working at the humane society.

We had a Westie named Molly who passed away last July 3rd at 8 1/2 from complications to skin allergies.  We now have Layla, a Cairn Terrier who is just over 6 months.

We live in a log cabin, built entirely by hubby.  It's situated in central eastern Maine and located on 3 1/2 acres in a very rural area.  It backs onto a forested area and atop a mountain.  Just down the hill are two beautiful ponds - one on either side of the road.  Hubby fishes down there on his pontoon boat and is hoping to take Layla with him this summer.

I have a daughter who lives just south of Nashville and is program director for Alzeimer's Association and her husband is attending a NASA University getting his doctorate in engineering.  I also have a son who lives in Toronto, Canada and he is a mechanical engineer.   My family (Mother who is 93 and two brothers + all nieces and nephews) all live in Montreal and I usually get up at least once a year to visit.

Thanks so much for making this posting as I haven't been on her long and it was very confusing to remember everyone and their babies names.  It's a real pleasure that you all allow us to share in a small part of your lives.

This is a great idea Cheryl.  I've always wished I knew a little about our "regulars" and of course the others too.  I'm Charleen, and I have Chester the Westie and our honorary terrier, Paco, a Chihuahua who is full of terrier spirit.   I found Chester, then an 18 month old pup, at our local shelter, the same place I found Paco and also Stacie, a wonderful Toy Poodle whom I miss very much. I volunteered there for nine years but gave it up when my Westie girl Chantal became diabetic. With her compromised immune system I was afraid of what I may bring home to her. I never got back to volunteering but it is in my plans after I retire.  It was heartbreaking at times but also very rewarding. My other dogs have been BoBo, a one of a kind mixed breed, Tiffany, a Westie and most recently Joy, a sweet little white Poodle.  I work in the Purchasing Department of our hospital.  It's the 4th department I've worked in since starting there as a kid in Junior High.  I was 13.  I guess "child labor" was allowed back then.  In another month I can retire (not planning on it though) so I guess I've spent an entire lifetime in the medical field.  Chester and I joined here about five years ago.  In addition to it being a fun place, I feel I've learned a lot. Our Vet is awesome and she always tells me I'm the best informed client she has, and I ask questions no one else would ever think of asking.  I often know about new products and procedures even before she does, and most of them I've learned about right here on the TC.  I really believe this places makes us better dog parents.

My name is Ruth and I have been a member since Jan. 2005. Jerry and I are both retired and make our home in northern Mississippi. I was married for 51 years when I became a widow in March 2005. Bob was a retired Naval Officer and we lived many wonderful places around the world such as Guam, Hawaii, Spain and Germany. I have visited many other countries and nearly every state except New England. I have 3 children, 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. Not liking living alone I met a man who had lost his wife of 49 years. We were both real estate brokers with different companies but met through "Match.com". Since we had 100 years of practice between us we decided to try marriage together. We have now been married 4 years this June. God had given me 2 wonderful men. Jerry also has 3 children but he has 8 grandchildren. My girls are all westies,  Miss Molly age 10 and Bridget age 6 fell in love with Jerry but they were not thrilled that he brought that yellow female cat named Otis with him. They now accept Otis but she runs from Miss Molly. This year we were fostering a westie that we got from the shelter in Arkansas for Westie Rescue Southeast in Middle Tennessee. The 2 girls, Otis, Jerry and I fell in love with her so we had to keep her, we named her Ashley. She and Otis are the best of friends and Bridget loves to zoom with Ashley. Miss Molly will zoom with them sometimes when she finds the energy. They all 4 give us a lot of joy and laughter and they are our "children". Jerry and I spend a lot of time with church and church activites and he loves his woodworking shop which had been my extra large 2 car garage and I love sewing and decorating, reading and cooking. I spend a lot of time with the local Military Officers Wives Club where I presently am secretary and also play bridge with our group. I am probably the eldest member of TC in years (Jerry is 74 and I am 73) but I feel younger every year. We also love to travel and especially love to cruise. Our last cruise was just last month and we have already put a deposit on our next cruise, we just need to decide where to go. Another trip to Alaska or maybe to Southern Carribbean? The cruises are great but would be better if we could take the girls.

HI. I am enjoying getting to know everyone here better!
I am Carole and have two Westies, Maggie and Caesar. I am originally from North Carolina, but married an Air Force officer and ended up in Nebraska when he retired a couple of years ago. We have two sons, 16 and 20. When I got married, I wanted a dog and my husband, Ron, said "no froo-froo dogs, I want one I can play with". But I wanted a dog small enough to sit with me on the couch, so we decided on a Westie. Our first one was Daisy. She was a wonderful girl, but died at age 11 from meningitis. Only two days later we visited a breeder and picked out Maggie. The house would have been too quiet without a dog. Maggie is a sweetie who love to give "kisses".
A couple of years ago Ron and I realized we were both following the Little White Dog Rescue web site. We decided to adopt on of their pups and Ceasar, a puppy mill rescue, came into our lives. That is when I found this group. Ceasar is a very sweet and patient pup. Both dogs were at the groomer yesterday and she made a point of telling me how good they both were for her. (Maggie tries to lick her the whole time she getting groomed, and Caesar is just very patient and stands nicely).
I also enjoy reading and painting (oils). I teach ballroom dance to fifth graders as part of a community arts project -(very part-time). My husband and I dance together and have been in a couple of ballroom competitions. In fact we have one this week-end.
Thanks to everyone on this site for all your advice and help.

Hello,

I'm mom to four girls known as the Sisters.

No not blood sisters but Sisters in life.

They are from different puppy mills and other walks of life.

First is Phoenix,

Her brother and sisters were born one evening way before midnight but Phoenix waited till long after midnight and was born the day the towers were hit on 9 - 11- 2001 so she was named Phoenix Liberty Bell.

Then Faith,

She is from one of the worst puppy mills in Missouri, My daughter and I drove from PA to get her.

She had a life that was so bad for a year old Westie the vet that saw her first almost put her down, but she is a fighter and made it.

Faith has after a few years of a good life come down with Cushing's, sugar and is  blind  but this has only made her fight even harder.

Then there's Stormie,

She is from a puppy mill about 25 miles from me, she was in bad shape when I got her at 6 years of age, but now at age 14 she is looking and acting younger and younger.

And along came Tillie,

A Cairn, she was just full of it, if something was chewed or broken you knew she was the one that did it, but she didn't know any better.

She was 11 months old and we were her fourth owner, no one could take care of her or seem to want her.

EXCEPT her first mom, but her mom was 79 years old and going blind and could not take care of a puppy as wild as Tillie, next owner had a kid that thought dogs were stuffed toys, third owner put her outside a lot, they also had a puddle that didn't like Tillie.

So when I heard about Tillie we had to get her and after seeing this skinny puppy with the big eyes my hubby fell in love with her and Our Phoenix never left Tillie's side, so there you have it, this is How The four  became The Sisters. .

Ellen and Gracie also known in these parts as The White Bullet. We joined almost 5 years ago when Gracie came to live with us. She has been the joy of our life. She has lot's of pup friends and walks 5+ miles daily with either her papa or her mom and one of her many friends. We live in Southern CT about a mile from the CT River as the crow flies. She pretty much spends all day with papa while her mom is busy teaching school. Papa owns his own business so Gracie generally spends all day with him helping im to run errands and making sure there are no crumbs on the floor in the kitchen of the cafe. Gracie is also a great hunter and loves to chase (capture and kill) the elusive squirrel. Chipmunks are another favorite to trap. The wild Turkeys won't come in the yard any more. One of her bff's Penny the Poodle (who lives next door) is one of her daily hunting partners. Penny covers the trees and Gracie smells the ground. We often call her the princess of Bow Lane because indeed she is our princess.

I'm David from Ohio and have been a member for almost 6 years.  I joined here before I got my first Westie and it was because of everyone here on the TC that I did end up with the love of my life Cooper.

I got Cooper from a Pet store (I know, I will never do that again) but he needed me and I needed him.  He was 4-1/2 months old and was cooped up the entire time......hence his name "Cooper".  Cooper taught me that it's not always about me but it's "all about him!!!”  When I got Cooper we lived in Pennsylvania.  After 3 years we moved to Arizona, Not sure who hated it more there, me or Coop.  So we then moved to Ohio where I am a licensed insurance agent.  Cooper was a real trooper on the trips across the country.  Okay so he slept most of the way!

A year and a half ago I rescued Caesar from a puppy mill.  We think he was 3 at the time but really no idea.  He is a cuddle bug and he and Cooper get along great.  Because of Caesar I have all newly refinished hardwood floors!!!  Don't ask!!!  LOL!!!  He is the second love of my life!

I am hoping to move to the North or South Carolina when I retire.  I LOVE my house here in Ohio but not the snow.   I can't believe I am old enough to contemplate retirement.  Even when retired I will work part time just to get out of the house a bit.  Last year was my 35th high school reunion; I was obviously just 4 when I graduated!!!!

The best part of my life............Cooper and Caesar!!!

This is a wonderful idea.
I love reading all about everyone.
We have been members for a little over two years.
Patrick and I (Mara) live in New York, about 30 miles north of NYCity. Patrick enjoys  barking at the animals that visit our yard: squirrels, chipmunks, wild turkeys, lots of deer, and unfortunately even a bear.
I teach college English part time and my husband is a lawyer in the city.
Patrick is 9 &1/12 and really misses having the kids around. Our daughter is graduating from law school in May and will be working in Washington DC. She is engaged and the wedding will be in Baltimore, MD. next March.
Our 22 year old son graduated from college last year and went to Orlando, Florida where he absolutely loves working in DisneyWorld as a character performer.
When my daughter went away to college, the house felt empty, so we got Patrick as a puppy from a backyard breeder.  He has become the love of my life.
Four years ago he had a heart operation due to stenosis and an enlarged heart.
He is doing really well, but I'm an overprotective Mom and I am frequently worrying about him. He and I enjoy going for long walks every day.

Hi, My name is Carol and my little girl is Ellie. She is 3 years old and I have had her since 9 weeks. She was bought for me as a birthday present by my friends Dad at the same time he bought Ellies brother, Jethro for my friend. (I had lost a 14 year old Toy Poodle Gina ,7 months earlier) I wasn't out looking for a dog just helping my friend choose her dog, but when the breeder asked if I would like to hold her, that was it. From that moment we belonged to each other. I knew instantly what her name was. We have been inseperable ever since. She is my life. She keeps my laughing and is a real character (as they all are I gather).  Ellie and Jethro meet up every week for playtime and Ellie always gets the better of her brother, dragging him about by his ears. As for me - well I am 56, (next month), divorced and have no children (other than Ellie) I live in East London, UK.  I work for my very good friend Alexandra who is the owner of the only Doctor Who shop in the world. For those of you unfamiliar with Doctor Who. It is an English Sci-Fi series that stated in 1963, and I remember watching the first episode - yikes. It began life as a childrens programme, but the adults took over. I help Alex out in the shop, I design her flyers and posters and shop signs. And help out at conventions.

Hi.  My name is Mary and I live in Cherry Hill New Jersey with Bonnie, a Cairn and Keeley, a Westie.  I originally had an Irish Wolfhound and when she went to the Rainbow Bridge I knew I wanted another dog but not such a big dog. I did a lot of research and decided on a Westie.  Keeley was 8 weeks old when she came to live with me.  One day while lurking on the Terrier website I noticed that Eve, of "The Sisters" had posted a picture of a dog that she had rescued.  Bonnie had such a sad looking face that I just knew I had to have her.  I believe the sad face is a ploy of Bonnies.  She still has that look but is the happiest dog I have ever seen.  Bonnie was my husbands favorite but since he passed away I have tried to make up for the attention that she got from him.
I am a retired teacher so I spend most days at home with the pups.  We divide our time between our home in Cherry Hill and our house at the shore.  The pups love going to the shore.  We have a home on the water and they enjoy barking at the gulls and boaters going by.  They also have dog playmates living next door.
Life is good.

My name is Jamie, and live in the state of Pennsylvania, about 20 minutes from Pittsburgh. I'm a nurse, and after 18 years of working at our local hospital, I started working private care. I enjoy it, but work a lot of hours. I also work at KOHL'S a couple days a week, although I spend much more than I make there! KOHL'S always has alot of Westie / Scottie things for sale around the Christmas holiday. I divorced after 16 years of marriage, and found a good guy to share my life with.  His name is Darryl, and he has a heart of gold.  We share our home with a 13 year old ShihTzu named Gizmo, a 7 year old Scottie named Max (that is a real comical bugger!)  a 6 year old Westie named Bella.  She's quite a mole catcher! She also is a mother hen to Gizmo. Max and Bella are always zooming around the house. We also have a outdoor cat named TC (Top Cat) 3 aquariums of tropical fish, and one of fancy goldfish that have grown huge.  Max and Bella enjoy sitting on the back of the sofa to watch the goldfish, and they love to watch Animal Planet, except Max is constantly jumping up at the TV, trying to get whatever critter happens to be on it. I use to help out at our Humane Society's Spay and Neuter clinic, and rescued a lot of animals (from dogs to chickens, rabbits cats, and even a goat) over the years. My artist friend, Suzanne Renaud told me about TC in 2004, as my 18 year old Westie, Beau had just crossed the bridge, and she thought I could talk to others that had lost thier furkid. I have met alot of nice people here on TC. Although I lurked alot, I didn't join TC until 2005.  I still try to lurk from time to time, but working so many hours makes it difficult.

Re: LET'S GET ACQUAINTED! Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

Back in the summer of 2006, we were getting ready to send our son off to private high school.  Our daughter was already in college, and I work at home doing medical transcription.  With the idea of being in the house by myself from dawn to dusk (hubby works in Boston and was leaving at 6 AM and not getting back until 6 pm at that time),  I couldn't think about my son leaving without crying.  I knew I needed someone or something to keep me company, so I told hubby I wanted to get a puppy.  He suggested a cat instead.  But I told him a cat doesn't really need me - you feed them and change the litter, and you could literally never see a cat, but a puppy, yep, that was what I needed.  He finally agreed, at which point I said, "I want two puppies".  He thought I had totally lost my mind.

I knew I wanted a Westie and started looking online and found thru our local MSPCA that some Westies were in foster care in CT.  After numerous phone calls with the foster mom, and possible adopters not showing up, my kids got up with me at 6 AM on a Saturday morning and drove the 1-1/2 hrs west and then south into the back woods of CT.  She still had three pups available, and we picked the two we wanted (the third little guy was gonna be adopted later that day).  There had been four Westies and about 14 other miscellaneous kinds of pups rescued from a euthanasia site in Missouri, where these puppy mill pups had been dropped off, all male.  Fortunately someone found them and said "no way", and all 18 pups came to CT into foster care.  All 18 were adopted within about a two week period.

We worked at trying to find the appropriate names for them, and my daughter found a website with names of pairs.  If you ever watched The Muppets, you'll remember the two old guys in the balcony.  They are Waldorf and Statler; so that is where my babies got their name!  And they are characters just like the two old hecklers!  LOL

They have brought us so much happiness.  Funny thing was that my son came back from private school after the first semester.  He joked that now that he was back, we didn't need the puppers any longer!  But all four of us have absolutely fallen in love with them.  They each have their own different personalities with each one of us.  Nothing better than being greeted at the door by someone ecstatic to see you!  Can't imagine what life would be like without them.  We are fortunate that when we travel, our cleaning lady comes and stays at our house with them.  She loves them too, and they love her!

This is great fun.  Well, I came to live with mom almost 5 years ago.  She got me from our local pet store.  She had been without a house dog for two years and when she saw me I stole her heart away, so she had to take me home - or be without her heart!  It had been 17 years since she had a pup to raise, and boy, did I teach her a thing or two.  Dad thought mom was out of her mind, but now I am daddy's girl.  After our outside dog died I was so lonely.  Mom took me to see some Scottie puppies and I picked out Buster.  Oh, what was I thinking!  Some one in an earlier post said their scottie was a comical thing - and so is Buster.  Well, I'm not lonely anymore.  We have become great hunting partners and mom's best friends.  Mom is a hospice nurse and only works 3 days a week, so has plenty of time for us.  She also has 3 driving ponies, 3 cats (I hate them!) and a betta fish.  We used to have a guinea pig, but it died this winter of old age.  How about that - a house with terriers has a guinea pig last to old age.  That took some doing. We also like to visit grandma's sheep farm, camp, ride 4-wheelers and go for car rides.  We are so spoiled.  Mom just looked in the living room; I am in dad's recliner, Buster has the loveseat and Dad is sitting on the floor.  Its great to be a terrier!!

This is a great idea - - I have enjoyed learning more about our members.  I came to TC in 2004 when Kirby was diagnosed with Addison's Disease. I asked for help and got lots of help, resources and support.  I didn't become active in TC until 2006.  Kirby is 11 years old and is  an "only" and although we've discussed it and  asked several times - - she does not want us to get a pet!  I love it here----I also go on facebook and find it very interesting that we are more apt to talk about it all here on TC where we are a family of terrier loving friends.
I got Kirby from two wonderful friends -  they had lost their dog at the same time as I had lost mine of 13 years....they said they knew they didn't want another and before I knew it, I tearfully said that after six months without a pet that I knew I did want one.....I either needed a new vacuum sweeper or new puppy to help me pick up after my cookie carrying  grandkids..hence the name Kirby -  after the vacuum sweeper.....The next day, they called and said they knew someone who just had a litter of Westie pups and she was GIVING THEM AWAY.........I believed and went with them (a friend of theirs from where they worked) and chose Kirby.  I did not find out for a few years that they had fibbed to me and paid dearly for Kirby.  Kirby has been a wonderful canine companion and actually takes very good care of me...won't let me go to bed if I forget to put the garage door down....wakes me if I don't get up to the clock...It is Kirby who has rescued me.  That newness of having her has never worn off - - she's the best!!!!

I took advantage of an early retirement incentive after 30 years with our School District - I was a school secretary (which I loved) and many classes later wound up in Human Resources of our District.  (You can take just so much Human Resources!!!)  After retirement,   I found that I didn't like staying home full time, so I rewired and have had a wonderful time learning all new things at my part time position at an Art Gallery - Marianist Galleries,  - I take the photos of artwork,  manage our website, take care of our office duties.  I feel like I've won he lottery in the game of Life with a wonderful evironment and my artist co-workers who are Brothers in the Society of Mary (Marianists).

I enjoy the time I get to spend with my family as does Kirby - - - my grandchildren, especially....our youngest was 10 and then we got our double blessings last summer with the twin grandsons......this must be what is meant by "the best is yet to come"...I'm enjoying life....I always say that growing up in the 60's was wonderful but never in my wildest dreams did I expect my personal 60's to be so great!

Hi - I'm linda,  mum to charlie & mr. butters,  Westies,  here in Connecticut.  We have only been members of the TC since last Fall,  but have been enjoying it immensely.  Even though I don't always have time to post,  I enjoy keeping up with how everyone is doing here.  I usually try to check in a few times a week.  I've learned a great deal from all you guys & your experiences,  & am very thankful to have found you all.

Charlie & Mr. Butters are affectionately known at our house & the neighborhood as the Boys.  My husband Paul & I are retired & in our 60s & 70s.  We lived in apts. until we were able to buy my late parents' home in 2004,  & in 2005 we decided to fulfill our lifetime dream of having a dog to love.  We found Charlie on Petfinder.com,  in the classified section.  He was 13 months old,  & living with his first family in Massachusetts.  They were unable to keep him any longer,  but they were impressive in their diligence to find a good  (& legitimate)  home for him.  (They actually called our references;  they also called our local high school,  which is across the street from our house,  to confirm what we had told them about what our neighborhood was like!)  We had to wait anxiously while another family took him for a week's trial visit,  but were so happy when he & they didn't work out.  We took him home for our week's trial,  & we knew he had to be with us forever after only the first day.  We ran right out & bought a bed for him to nap in between our 2 recliners.  We would just stare down at him in absolute wonder...  He taught us so much - not just about doggiehood,  but about spiritual things like our own relationship/obedience to our Creator...

After we had Charlie for a year or so,  we went back to Petfinder to find a companion for him,  & after a few months,  through a round-about association with a shelter there,  we were put in touch with another family in Massachusetts who were ready to put their 2 & a half yr. old Westie,  Mr. Butters,  in a shelter.  We went right up there with Charlie,  & it was friends at first sight for them.  They took off chasing each other all around the neighborhood,  & we still chuckle when we think of that picture & remember how nervous we were that Charlie would disappear!  Anyway,  they are the best of brothers,  & it's been the best of situations for all four of us.  As it turns out,  they are only 1 month apart in age  (both now 6 going on 7).  Having Mr. B. has cured Charlie's previously picky eating habits,  & now Mr. B. has learned to pee like a boy & scratch his back feet in the dirt.  Charlie doesn't have to stay in a crate all day long & tear everything up,  & Mr. B. doesn't have to stay alone all day & amuse himself with the only  (yes,  one)  toy that he had.  And we couldn't be more blessed...

It amazes us constantly how different their little  (excuse me,  terrier puppers:  BIG)  personalities are.  We do miss having known them as puppies,  but we knew our limits & decided that we would not be up to puppyhood when we decided to adopt.  We have a neighbor friend who has Westies & who has fostered a few,  so we have been able to live vicariously through their revolving puppies!

We live modestly here,  & will probably stay here forever,  even though the winters are getting harder to deal with.  Because we are older,  we wish  1)  that we can outlive our boys,  &  2)  that we can always keep up with them!  They do get about 2 miles of walking each day,  as long as the weather & our aches & pains allow.  And,  of course,  they get lots of playing & chasing time at home.  Getting down on the floor to play with them is also helping us to stay limber!!  (heehee - those of you who are older know how difficult it is to get up off the floor once you get down!)  We are planning to set up a little trust for them so that they can be placed together in a loving home,  just in case we go before they do.

Thanks all for your easy friendship & genuine concern for each other.  This site is a blessing...

Sorry we're late, Mom kept waiting for Dad to reply & he's been so busy that she decided to do it herself!

Dad joined here after he & Mom adopted me, Bailey, probably about 5 years ago. In the past when my hu-brother & sisters were living at home they had a cocker spaniel and four cats! After awhile with no pets and discovering our Scottish roots and doing much research they decided a westie would be perfect for them. Then they went searching.  They found me in a rescue on the far east side of the state.  I was worth the drive I must say as we all fell in love with each other right away. At the time they were keeping their daughter's beagle and we became friends. When the beagle went to his home a few months later they became invovled with a local resuce group and brought home a foster that became my sister-Gracie Lou. The following year Dad fell in love with a little puppy that almost died and they decided to add her to the family as well. the group sent her with another puppy for them to keep for a little while until it could find a foster or permanent home.  Both puppies had so much fun that they both stayed!!  Sadly, one puppy, Caitlyn, developed kidney problems that turned out to be from bad breeding and didn't survive. Since the other puppy, Tuffy, didn't have anyone younger to play with then she was pestering us all the time and driving everyone crazy!!  Luckily another young dog showed up in our rescue group and we adopted Shayla.  A little over a year ago Gracie Lou became very sick.  She had had health problems since we had her, she came from a horrendous puppy mill. In the past she was able to overcome everything, even Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, but not this time.  Shortly after we lost Gracie we saw another doggie from a puppy mill and decided we wanted her. That's how we ended up with Kaylee.  We are known as the OK Westie Club and have many adventures.

Mom & Dad unfortunately have decided to learn to play the bagpipes and while they wear earplugs, we don't have that option!  We're pretty good sports though as we do hear some improvement.  Sometimes we'll go to local Scottish Festivals with Mom & Dad. We always get strange looks when we go for walks as we also have a foster brother or sister staying with us.  I think we look grand, all five of us side by side walking down the street!

We love it here and appreciate all of the kindness and support and wealth of information available.  This is the place to be!
