OT - Bird lovers Vote for this post

No, not to eat but to watch.  Here's a handsome fellow mom saw while making her rounds to see patients.  Mom read in the paper that an eagle was shot near this area and was too injured to save.  She hopes it wasn't this fellow.  Why would anyone want to shoot an eagle?  Creeps.  Anyway, this time of year eagles visit us until around March.  Its always a thrill to see them.  (p.s. - one good thing about being chubby - I'm too heavy for an eagle to fly off with!)  FYI this eagle was hanging around a pasture of cows. They eat the afterbirth (and you thought dogs eat gross stuff).  Last week mom saw two eagles in a different place.  Ravens were chasing them away from a dead deer.  Anyone else have eagles?

We don't have eagles at our house but do have some close by where it's a little more mountainous. I'll have to check and see if the eagle cam down south is set up yet -- that's always fun to watch..

They nest down river near the shoreline here. Occasionally, they fly up this far (about 10 miles give or take as the crow flies). Majestic animals. Can't mistake them wen they fly over.

Here in our part of Maine we have eagles down on the pond.  When hubby goes fishing (both open water and ice) they wait for his catch and zoom in for the kill.  Hubby has taken many pictures of these majestic birds.  We also have osprey which sometimes will compete with the eagles for fish.  Then there are the smaller loons which try to outsmart the larger birds.  One of the nicest sounds in summer are the loons down on the pond, singing in the evenings.

Here the eagles leave in March and the osprey show up for the summer, that limits competition.  Also, I don't think osprey eat carion like the eagles do.

What a beautiful shot! We have eagles all around us here--one about 1/2 mile from our house and we see him flying sometimes. The thrill of seeing them never gets old--it literally takes my breath away! I'm a birder (Audubon Society and local birding group) and it just makes me sick to hear of these senseless killings--I hope whoever did it gets caught and punished. We hosted a fieldtrip on Saturday--28 birders from Appalachian Audubon Society came to our house to see an Evening Grosbeak (a rare sight here in PA!) that's been coming into our feeders since mid December--beautiful bird! Thanks for sharing the eagle pic--made my day!
Love, Deb and Kelsie

I wish evening grossbeaks were rare here.  They come back late winter/early spring and can strip a birdfeeder in no time.  They bully away the smaller birds.  They are pretty, though.

We host a lot of birds (unofficially!) at our place -- we have a great setting for habitat including cover, water, and naturally growing foods, plus we feed sunflower seed and a peanut butter mix pretty much year round bu we've never gone for the official habitat status. That being said, I was watching a junco this morning trying to get to some of the peanut butter mix -- just delightful. We've had grosbeaks here -- more in the past than lately, but each year we usually see, if just for a very short time, the evening grosbeaks and the rose-breasted (my favorite)! One year we had an indigo bunting and a scarlet tanager on the same day for about 2 minutes -- what a thrill!!!!! I just love watching the birds! Trip bought me a new feeder for Christmas and mounted it just outside my office window -- now, I can't get any work done!!!!!

Great shot and we do have eagles here.
Falcons also and lots of big birds.
I don't know them all but Moshe starts to bark at Egrets large and small.
I love to see the pelicans flying over on the beach . Guess I am a lover of all birds.

I love this photo Lori!  We have seen eagles in our area, but not many!  We live near the lake and the TN river and have woods nearby, so we see a lot of birds.  We love watching them!  My favorite is the cardinal!
