Quick Molly Update and Westie Rescue Question Vote for this post

Hi everyone - first of all, I need to say I have read, and re-read, all of your messages on my prior 2 posts and your kindness might be all that is pulling me through this. It is the hardest thing I've ever gone through in my life. I guess that's what happens when you fall in love this deeply.

Molly had a pretty good weekend. We took her to her favorite park on the lake, and she ran like a puppy sniffing all the smells. It makes my heart hurt so see her so happy. It's such a bittersweet thing, because she can look so good but I know her time is very short.

We have her on both an anti-inflammatory and a narcotic pain reliever. During the day she seems fine. There were actually a few points this weekend where she seemed happier than I've seen her in ages. Arooing at her neighborhood friends, play charging her daddy (which is how she signals it's time to play the "chase me" game)- her tail was up, her eyes were bright.

But at night she is so restless. It breaks my heart.

I think we may be down to her final day or so. I will not let her suffer. But it is so hard to know what to do. Days are good, nights are tough....

Anyway - my question - does anyone know how to contact Westie Rescue? I thought in years' past someone used to post here from there.

We are starting to look for another puppy. I abhor puppy mills. I've found 2 places that are accepting deposits for upcoming Westie litters but they're both larger operations than I would normally be comfortable with. I'm hoping someone knows how to reach Westie Rescue so I can share the names of these breeders with them and find out if they are legitimate.

Deeply, deeply appreciate all the kindness from everyone here. Lord I love this dog so much.

Hi, it's always so difficult to know when, but you will know.

As far as contacting rescue to see if they know if a breeder is legit, I'm not sure that rescue groups could help you with that.  Have you considered adopting a Westie that is a year or two old?  Not only will you be certain you are saving a life, but you will avoid the issues that come with training a new pup.

If you'll google Westie Rescue - New York (or any state) you will quickly find the rescue reps in your area.  Also, Petfinder.com is a great resource.

We live in Florida, but adopted our Maggie through Westie Rescue of Missouri about 5 years ago.

Good luck!

Sherrie

Also check the National Club for Westies. There is a page there for Rescues and I believe they may have reputable breeders.  In any event, you can contact them for reputable breeders.

I volunteer for Westie Rescue, Inc. in Virginia and both Toby and Suzie are rescues.   My Annie was also a rescue.  I've fostered many and all are wonderful dogs.

Oh, Patti....as you know, my heart breaks for you.

Try Westie club of America and also the AKC for reputable breeders.  I'm not sure how much they can help, though.

There are one or two rescue groups in NY.  Look on facebook...I think they have a page or two there.

There is a gal named Naomi Brown who breeds Westies...I will try to find some info. on her.  Her dogs are show quality and the American link to a famous breeder in the UK. I believe it is Ashford or Ashcroft or something..I will do more research on that.

Hang in there....a vet once told me, as long as they have more good days than bad days, they are not ready, but only you know your girl.  I just hate to see you so upset, but as you know...I know.

Love and hugs,
Jeanie

Jeanie, you have no idea how much help you've given me over these past few horrible days. And thank you so much for this referral. I have sent her an email and also filled out her puppy contact form. I don't mind waiting for the right puppy and she is definitely the quality breeder I'm looking for.

Thank you!!

God love her, Molly sounds like she's going about the business of just being a terrier. As someone who's been in your position, I have to think that Molly will let you know when she's ready to go. Till then, just enjoy every minute with her. Never forget that they can pick up on our feelings, so try to be upbeat around her--I know that's asking a lot....One other thing--when you decide the time has come to give her wings, give yourself time to grieve. Nobody can put a time limit on how long it will take. I hope I haven't offended you and I hope this helps you in some small way.
Love, Deb, Emmie, and Angel Kelsie

Of course you haven't offended me! No worries there.

I appreciate the kindness of everyone here. Everyone is speaking from their heart and I value that. I'm trying to find the best path through for me, and knowing that there will be another dog for me to love some day down the road gives me some small comfort. It's my way of reassuring myself that life will go on.

Patti I am so glad to hear that Molly
is having so much fun and is having good days.
I will pray that she can be with you a little while longer.
It is heartbreaking to love a Westie so much
and have to let them go.
I was heartbroken when Iver left me.
He was my heart dog and I loved him very much

I'm a little late in helping you with a Westie referral
because it sounds like you found a good one
Any way here is the link to the Westie Club of America
They have a list of breeders in all states.
I will use them to find a breeder in California when I move there

I see they also have a link to rescue Westies

David, thank you so much! I had not seen that website and appreciate your passing it along.

And thank you for all of your kind words. I'm just trying to focus on loving her for as long as she is here. It's just so stinking hard.

Patti, we are happy to hear Molly is having good days. My heart is heavy. I was so sad to hear to options and it kept haunting me. I know what you are going thru. You can contact the northern nj westy club they have a web site, I use to belong to them and they have very good breeders and sometimes place their breeders in a good home .

Thank you so much Allen. I'm bookmarking all the options and appreciate the help.

I still hope I'm doing the right thing by not treating it at all (except with pain killers, of course). I second-guess myself every step of the way.

You will probably always second guess yourself I know I did with all of mine. I am not a believer in chemo for dogs (but that's personal choice) and at the end of the day to me it's about their quality of life not length. I've always found my vet Kent
a wonderful sounding board when it has come to treating my girls. We've been going to him for 20+ years.

Glad to see you've found yourself a breeder, should have read your update first. I was lucky that I didn't have to wait long for Matilda I went on a waiting list in May 2014 and by August she had been born. My new pup I was even more fortunate as I asked in mid November and given our devastating loss (my 2 Westie girls in just 7 weeks) Matilda's breeder put me at the top of her waiting list and we get our new baby in January 2016. Hopefully your wait isn't too long.

I totally agree with your course of treatment. It is a battle that cannot be won. Radical surgery is just too much to do to your wonderful Molly. Prayers your way.

Patti, I feel in my heart that you are doing the right thing for Molly and I think many others here do too. We always tend to second guess ourselves, we all do it, that is just human nature I think.

This is my own opinion, but I would not rely on AKC as I have read so many stories of how millers and BYB's have registered puppies with sires that have been gone for years and similar.

I'm hoping you will check out the rescue groups as they often get young dogs, even puppies, especially after the holidays when people decide they really don't want that gift that someone unthinkingly gave them.

Many of them will go to great lengths to get their dogs to a good home too. Cedric is one example, from New York, through Buffalo to Cambridge Ontario where I picked him up. I think there were 8 sets of drivers and they all took photos along the way, he was on one heck of a great adventure.

I would check with your vet about something to give Molly a more restful night, or try Malatonin (available in health food stores) it is something you do not have to worry about overdosing, I used this for Casey when we went to the groomers, 3 to 6 drops 1/2 hour before would just quiet him (started with 3 found 6 worked better).

Quality of life and a quick, painless way out - isn't that what we would all like to have? I hope that doesn't upset you. Molly seems to be having a great time right now (even if the nights are tough) and she'll let you know when she's ready.

hugs, Theo xox

Re: Quick Molly Update and Westie Rescue Question Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

You will know when it's time. I knew in my heart both times and it just about killed me to do it but I couldn't let them suffer, they had given me 16 and 14 wonderful years respectively.

Westie rescue here in Australia are a little difficult to deal with as they won't adopt to people that work full-time, which is why I've had to go the puppy route each time. I don't think Westies are as well known or bred as much here as in other countries.

While not a fan of puppy mills, my Kelsi was a product of a puppy mill (along with Geordie) and we had 16 wonderful years together, she certainly had her bad allergy issues and was quite timid but I loved her dearly, she the sweetest natured dog I've owned. When we got them we didn't know puppy broker meant that the pups were supplied by a puppy mill. We certainly learnt our lesson there but don't regret a second we got to spend with them.

Is there a Westie club in your state that might be able to advise you of any dogs in need or give you info if you wanted to go thru a breeder? My 2nd Westie Hannah came from a breeder but she had bad allergies too, along with hip surgery @ 10 months for Legge Perthe's disease. So registered breeders aren't always better. By the time I was ready for my third I knew an ex-breeder who was grooming our Westies who gave me a name of a breeder who had been around for many years which is where I got Matilda and where my new puppy is coming from.

Best of luck with your search.

Patti I am so glad Molly is having some good days.  As long as she has more good days then bad days it it a good thing.  I went through it with my sweet Murphy in September.  You will know when it is time.  My Murphy made it very clear to me when it was time.  It doesn't make it any easier but you will know its the best decision.  I am still morning the loss of my sweet Murphy.  I did not want to let him go and give him up.  At that point he let me know it was the best think I could do for him and it was O.K.   Louise, Caesar and Murphy at the Bridge

Sorry  to hear about Molly. We all dread this time when it comes. My thoughts are with you. I live in CT, know the rescue people.... in fact the ex-president is my groomer. I went to a few functions. I found them snotty and elitist. I tried a few rescue groups to get a dog (I just wanted a terrier) and because my yard is not fenced in not one of them would give me a dog so I just went and bought one. They can pay over 5K to fence my yard in. I have a nice home, an excellent job, my husband is retired.... I could go on but they have some strange ideas. I live in the woods. My dog is trained to stay in the yard, and stay in she does.... good luck with those groups. I know my experience isn't everyone's but I'm not keen on those groups.
