Sorry for the missing images Vote for this post

I see in my last post about Hollywood Stars with Cairns that my 2 images I uploaded have been removed in that post. So I went to my image account and seen they had removed BOTH images. This is not the first time Photobucket has done this and it is very upsetting to see images I hold the rights to, to be deleted without reason.Yes the stars images were not mine(only edited a collage of a google search)  so I can see that ONE being removed BUT Maddie in the Dorothy dress is my image and it was deleted.

Last year I had to delete an account with Photobucket because some people had taken images they used for their blogs and adverts without my consent.Claiming my terriers were theirs. Same thing happened with a FB account I had so don't like using their site either. If you make the images private you are unable to share them so it's not giving me what I need it for.

Is there any other photo hosting site that I can use that can provide private sharing to places I select?? I may have to use smaller images and use our TC album.
Again sorry for the missing images.Nothing worse than those empty boxes...ugh!! Thanks for letting me rant my frustration. If you have some suggestions let me know.

I keep all my photos on my computer. I upload one at a time when I post to the TC.  This way I do not have a lot of things on the web.

Hope this is helpful.

Love Sir William ^--^

Hi Sandra,
I'm sorry that photobucket is giving you a hard time
I quit using photobucket about a year ago.
They were nothing but trouble
I have done a search on Yahoo for photo sites
and unfortunately I haven't found any yet.
I will try to keep searching though.
Until then I have been using Iver's photo album here.

David and Allen thanks for your suggestions. May go back to the TC album and get rid of photobucket all together. When they start deleting your original images for no reason or notice to why it's being done...it's maybe time to move on and close the account.

I kept a copy Sandra, so if you've lost the photo of Ms Maddie, PM me your email address and I'll send it to you. Now I wish I had kept the collage too.

hugs, Theo

Mark has help me sort things out so I can have the album to upload once again.

My photo skills are not the best Sandi. I had my PC upgraded last summer and I don't know what the heck he did but at least 3/4 of my saved pics I can't open and I have no idea what to do, I certainly don't want to take it back to the same guy. Some I can open and other not... grrr go figure!!

You have a few options:
1)Make your Photobucket account private so people can't steal your photos.
2)Use Flickr (powered by yahoo). Flickr allows for different copyright licenses so you can say for fair use only (some rights reserved), no copyright (share and share alike), or all rights reserved (no one else can use your image)
3) use Picasa/Google +

Unfortunately there are a lot of idiots out there - mostly teenagers and tweens - who think they can take whatever they see online for free and it's theirs. The sort of thing you describe happens a lot.

As far as copyright goes - The photos of the stars were not yours. You didn't take them. (Unless you purchased the rights). Technically downloading the images was not legal. However- if you made the collage then it is your own work derived from copyrighted photos so you may be able to claim fair use. Anything before 1923 is technically in the public domain so some of those may have been public. Next time you can post a link to the image you want to share so you don't violate any copyright laws. I'm a librarian/archivist and we talk about this stuff all the time. Copyright law is super tricky especially with the Internet and phones now. The rule of thumb for fair use is usually:
10% of a work
An entire work copyrighted before 1923 (as in Google Books)
AND For educational purposes
Not for sale

Copyright that belongs to you
A photo you took yourself like your photo of Maddie.
An image you made altering another image is technically yours as well though if you're using another person's copyrighted image/s, it polite to ask first before you use it.

Hope that helps!

Robin I appreciate your response and thank you for all the information you included here on copyrights also for your suggestions on other places to upload images. I'll look into those sites as well. I did get another account for my photos set up yesterday that can work very well for here.

You're most welcome. I except the law to get more strict as more media options become available but it's so hard to police to the entire Internet. Professionals spend a very long time discussing the ins and outs of copyright. I'm not an expert by any means but I took careful notes in class. I looked carefully at the copyright office website and tried to translate it into normal language.

When posting your own photos online if you have problems with people stealing them, put a watermark through the photo to prove it's yours.

I'm an archivist for a local heritage organization and every time I choose an image of one of their inductees, I have to make sure we don't get sued for using it. I like Flickr and Wikimedia Commons because they have copyright notices with their photos. Sometimes I just send an e-mail to ask permission. I'm getting into the 20th century now which is harder. With newspaper photos it gets extra tricky because the photographers are often unknown or dead. Images of celebrities are usually owned by some service like Getty Images and wire images and those sites make you pay big bucks to use their images. They sell to major news outlets.

Libraries, museums and cultural institutions also often own old paintings and photos so technically they own the rights - however, if you take a picture of that painting, the picture you took is yours to do what you want. Some libraries/museums are debating how much to put online, whether to make it publicly available and whether to make a big, clear image public for anyone to take. Some libraries are all for creative expression and are excited to see how people are inspired by their collections, some are thrilled to have the attention and others make money by selling image rights and are super strict about what goes online.

Our pictures are on my computer but I have a lot on Photobucket in different files. Not one has been missing over the years. Once in a while I take pictures off myself but they still are on my computer and I also have a back up drive..
My sister uses Picassa..
I also have pictures on Webshots.com they are all scrapping pictures that I made. and here on the TC too.
How terrible that they used without your knowing it your pictures. .It would make me angry if someone did that with Moshe and Levi's pictures.
Love, Moshe,Levi and Yoka
