Bestie's amazing birthday present Vote for this post

I'm a Bloom County fan. Have been for years and years. Love me some Opus. And if you're a Bloom County fan, you know that Berkeley Breathed stopped drawing Opus about 25 years ago when, according to Berkeley, the political world got really nasty and that wonderful, gentle pudgy penguin would've been overwhelmed. Berk quit. He drew some other things and published a novel: Flawed Dogs: The Novel: The Shocking Raid on Westminster. I don't have the book, but that's ok.

Right after ED died, for reasons known only to my sister, she stumbled up on a giclee print autographed and doodled on by Berk Breathed. The print features the main character in Flawed Dogs. He's a dachshund with torn up, holey ears and a soup ladle for a back leg. His eyes are closed in the print, and he's clearly remembering better times. His little girl's face is in the sky above him. The print reads. "All animals dream. But only dogs dream of us."

I cried when I opened it. Without knowing one detail about the story or fully recognizing that I had an autographed print and doodle by Berk Breathed, I cried.

That print started me thinking about my own flawed dog. And what he would've used as a replacement for a tail. I decided he would pick a TV antenna from the '60s. One of those huge aerial ones that adorned roof tops across the country when there were only three television channels and all the shows were in black and white. He would tie that bad boy to his nub with red, white and blue shoelaces. And he'd wag that thing like a champion.

My wonderful, handsome, charming, funny flawed dog with ears the size of satellite dishes and no tail. How I miss him.

What a wonderful present!  In my option there are no flawed dog.  The joy, love and peace they give us is never flawed.  All those big ears, funny noses, crocked legs or tails just make them more special and beautiful to my heart.  Happy Birthday!  What a wonderful print!  Louise, Caesar, and Angel Murphy at the Bridge

Always loved Bloom County--I think there may be a few books of cartoons still lurking around here somewhere. Love the story behind the doodle and it brought tears to my eyes too. I've always figured that if you look deep enough, we all (two, four, or even three legged in this case) have a flaw or two and our buddies bring out the best in all of us--at least I hope they do. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and right now, with my hair sticking straight up in the air and a bit of sleepy dirt stuck to my right eye, only Emmie can look at me and see through to the beauty within. LOL  Glad to see you posting again. I know how much you miss that scamp of yours. Ed was special! Hope Arran Skye is keeping you on your toes!
Love, Deb, Emmie, and Angel Kelsie

Yep, I'm a Bloom County fan too and really miss the strip and its creator. Another favorite of mine, Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson, also went AWOL for similar reasons. Sigh.

Anyway, I love your story and was so pleased to learn that you have a new family member. Can't wait to follow Arran Skye's adventures!

Bloom County is back, Mark! The Christmas strip was as wonderful as Bloom County can be. You can read them on gocomics.com/bloomcounty.

Mary Alice, what a wonderful find, and a wonderful sister you have to realize how much the print would mean to you.

The expression on the Daxies face tells me that Flawed Dogs is a must read so I'll see if the library here can order it for me.  I miss Ed too, he was such a character.

Erran Skye, we will all be waiting to share in your adventures.
hugs, Theo
