Breed confusion Vote for this post

I got to thinking about some Molly memories last night, and started remembering all the different people we've run into through the years who didn't know what "kind of dog" she was.

I live in Central New York, and Westies and Cairns are very rare here.

We take Molly with us all over the place, and so many people will stop us to comment on how pretty she is. We've also been known to practically stalk other Westies or Cairns we see in our travels, because I enjoy meeting other owners and sharing stories.

Anyway - so many people have no clue what breed she is!

I've had people mistake her for a Bichon - which is nuts.

But my favorite memory was a woman who stopped us on our walk to say, "Wow - I've always wanted a Maltese!"

I wanted to tell her that if she can't tell the difference between a fully-grown 18 pound Westie, and a tiny little Maltese, perhaps she doesn't really know WHAT she wants. :-) But she seemed like a nice lady, so I just said thank you.

Has anyone ever said anything goofy about "what kind of dog is that" to you?

PS - we're still on track to pick up Allie on Saturday. I have not been this happy in a very long time. :-) Molly is still hanging in there, although that blasted tumor is looking ominous. It seems serendipitous that she's hung in there - and been happy, I might add - long enough that my house will never be without a fur child in it.

A Maltese, that is funny Patti.
On several occasions people would stop
and ask if Iver was a Scottie.
I'm glad you will be picking up Allie on Saturday
so that your home will always have a Westie.
More prayers for dear Molly that she hangs in there
until she can meet Allie.
Hugs for you and Molly.

A Scottie huh. Well - at least they picked another terrier. :-)

And thank you for all of your kindness over the past few months. I hear through your words how much you understand, and it really is a comfort to me.

Oh, yeah.  the best one I had was when I had my Kayla, a Cairn, and someone asked if she was a gray Westie.  But then not many people here have Cairns or know what they are.

A grey Westie?! Umm, yeah - that's called a Cairn!

You just reminded me I ran into a woman who had a Westie herself, but she insisted he was a sub-breed called a Lemon Westie. It was so weird.

Geez-- Lemon Westie?  Must be like the 'yellow Westie' I picked up (to move to rescue) with my 'black Westie'.  Kid you not, the AC had them listed like that on their website and on the paperwork.  Funny part of it was, as they led me back to see them, they had 3 big posters of cairns on the walls!

 Hi Pattie,

Like you we have been asked many times what kind of dogs are they? Everyone who meet Moshe and Levi love them.
I even got stopped on the beach several times by people who ask what kind of dogs they are.
It is always nice when you meet owners who have a Westie. The last time we was walking a red sportscar stopped and they told me they just left their 2 girl Westies at home and they was going to work. They told me they just had to stop when they saw me.
Guess I am one of those too that stops and like to meet Westies specially when I am in Europe and the boys are at home here in the USA. I miss them so much that I flip when I see one.LOL

Looking forward to hear how it went ones your Allie is home meeting Molly.
Praying everything will go well.
 Hugs and love,
Yoka,Moshe and Levi

I have to stop anytime I see someone walking with a Westie, Scottie or Cairn.  I love sharing stories about my terriers and want to hear all about their dogs.  Louise, Caesar and Angel Murphy

I know a lot of Cairns in Central New York! Col. Potter Cairn Rescue has held their Cairn Rescue Annual Party in Rome, New York twice and I think there's another one planned.

No one knew what Mishy was. Most people though Westie and some thought Yorkie. (Um yes a giant Yorkie). I see many more Cairns now than I used to.

Only just yesterday the vet nurse said to me (we've been going there for how many years!!) when I made an appointment for her 12 week vaccination.

What breed is she (Izabella)? A West Highland White Terrier

What colour is she? I just had to laugh I couldn't help it.

Westies are extremely rare in rural PA (at least around here they are!). The best "guess" I ever had was a woman who asked if Kelsie was a white Schnauzer!!!! I just smiled and said "something like that"! I figured I was never going to see her again and it wasn't worth the trouble to educate her...

Before I got my Kellie, I honestly thought that the wheaten Cairns were just Westies needing a bath. Kellie introduced me to Cairns. Both Westies and Cairns are very rare in New Hampshire, too.

We have been asked if Millie is a white scottie or a maltese too (although that was when she was really young.)  We have also had lots of people stop to pet her because they have or have had westies or cairns.  By the way, are Wheaten terriers the same as Cairn?  I've heard them called both and don't know the difference :-o

Wheaten Terriers are not Cairns they are quite a big long haired dog of that said breed...Eric was a Cairn of mine and he was Wheaten in colour though..so I guess maybe some people think the breed is a wheaten,Hugs Annie xxxxxxx

People have asked if I am a white Scottie. I say, yes I am white, and yes, I'm Scottish, but I am not a Scottie. I am a West Highland WHITE terrier, and then one crazy person said, Well what other colors do they come in? Geez!

Ha Ha people are so funny sometimes! I guess Cairns in the wheaten color is what confused me.  I googled and now see that a Wheaten terrier is not like us at all!

When I took Izabella in for her 12 week vaccination this morning a lady asked me whether she was a Westie puppy. It's rare for me to find someone that can identify them as Westies, admittedly we don't see any in our area. I usually get; Scottish Terrier or a Scotty dog and still some think they are Maltese.

I have the best story of all.  Years ago I walked into the waiting room of our Vet clinic with my two Westie girls.  This guy was sitting there waiting, looked at my Westies, looked at me, and asked if they're Boxers!

From reading the posts I guess most of us have had the odd breed question. I've been stopped and asked if my girls were white Schnauzers or Scotties.

Thinking about you today Patti as you have your homecoming with Allie. Can't wait to hear about it.
