Good checkup! Vote for this post

So I went in for my checkup today. I really like that place. Again, my vet said, "You'd never know he is almost 15." And he said he remembered me from when I was a puppy, my first time visiting him. That's pretty cool!

So here's the scoop: my eyes are getting older, my ears don't hear quite as well, but they still work. And I have arthritis in my old bones. (So he prescribed an anti-inflammatory for me.) But otherwise, I am AOK and we are happy for small blessings.

He also said i "won the prize" for being his oldest patient for today. Mom asked him if he'd treated any other Westies older than me, and he said no, so I guess I'm doing pretty well.

Just wanted you all to know!

Your pal,
Roo

The doc prescribed Deramaxx, an anti-inflammatory, for him and said I could give him 1/2 tablet when he's having a bad day (but not every day) The thing is, even with occasional use, it can tend to be somewhat expensive over time (roughly 50 cents per dose -- 1/2 of a 25 mg tab). Has anyone had any experience with this? I looked up the use of low-dose / baby aspirin for dogs and what I read indicated it's not for long-term use, and shouldn't be used for more than five days in a row at a time. Can anyone share their experience in treating for osteoarthritis?

Most of the time, Roo doesn't have "bad days" so it's hard to decide how to treat him. My indicator would be if he resisted going for walks -- some days he just doesn't seem up to it and other days he seems fine. I do notice that he sometimes has trouble jumping into the one chair we allow him in (which also has a lower seat than our other chairs so it's easier for him to get into). Most of the time he opts for his bed, which is elevated, but not high. It's only a short hop of maybe 8 inches or so. He loves that bed because it's in front of his favorite windows.)

Please don't think I'm cheap but do consider that daily use of Dermaxx would work out to somewhere around $400 per year, I think. Those of you who know me well know that I love my boy and I don't want him to suffer, but I also have to be practical in terms of what $ we have to live on, which is basically just Social Security.

I am also giving him a daily dose of Joint-Eze plus which is glucosamine (supports joint health), chondroitin sulfate (helps build cartilage and tissue), poultry cartilage and MSM, which helps maintain healthy fluid pressure.

I wonder if Walmart's pharmacy sells Deramaxx. They're a lot cheaper with their vet meds than the vet is.

Is there any reason why, with 19 views, no one at all cares to comment? If there is, I would appreciate knowing why. I know I don't visit as often as I used to but I've been a member for at least 15 years and I would have thought that would count for something and someone might be interested as to what is going on in our lives.

I've defended this club many times when some people have said they have left because it's "just not the same" here anymore, but maybe I was wrong to do that. Maybe I should agree with them and join their ranks as well.

Roo, Hello. Great to know you are doing well. I haven't knowledge about osteoarthritis or meds, sorry you are dealing with that. Sure am wishing you many good days. I know your Mom takes great care of you and you must have a nice vet too. I am excited to see your post.

Sorry Cheryl, I peeked in awhile ago but had to go cover a school function so didn't have time to comment. Kelsie was on Deramaxx for months before she passed. That was what they gave her for pain--1/4 tablet when needed. We got hers from Drs. Foster and Smith--much cheaper than at the vets. I suppose by now, the prices have increased, but it's worth a check! Like all of us, it sounds like Roo's aging--gracefully! LOL Enjoy that special little man--I've always had a soft spot for him. After all, he was Kelsie's "special someone"!

Roo we are so happy to hear you had a good check up.  I am afraid I have not had any experience with that anti-inflammatory so I am not much help.  I know how expensive medications can get so I would definitely check on line.  I bet you can get a better deal.  I do the baby ASA thing with Caesar if he gets sore or over does the vermant chasing.  Fortunately I don't have to do it very often.  Love Louise, Caesar and Angel Murphy

Great news, Roo! Did you tell that vet that some terriers are living to 20 these days? I don't know about that medicine for mean old "arthur itis" but I've heard Cosequin, Glucoamine and MSM help. The Col. Potter people swear by The Gift Of Life

I'm glad to hear you are still able to enjoy your walks most of the time.  It's great to read some good news!

I give Sir William Cosequin DS. Also check the pet med sites for a cheaper price. I know you can try a baby aspirin which is also an anti-inflammatory.

Glad you had a great checkup,

Love Sir William ^--^

Cheryl,

Sounds like Roo is doing great for his age.  My Bichon Bullett is approx. 12 yrs or better and suffers from Arthritis to the point that without meds he is not able to move from the pain on really bad days.  The Vet has prescribed Vetprofen - 75mg for him which runs about 1.20/pill and the dose is 1/2 pill/day. Buying online would be cheaper.  I'm giving him Cosequin DS plus MSM and since he has been on this brand he very seldom needs to take the Vetprofen.    Yes, these anti-inflamatory meds will hurt them long term but they are at the end of their lifespan and should be kept comfortable!  I finally gave in and agreed to take daily meds for MY arthritis this past year and I'm hopefully not as close to my end of life as Bullett is. LOL

Cheryl that is great news for Roo with his latest check-up. Sounds like he he aging gracefully even with the few down days which happen. Willie gets them too and resists walks sometimes. Just last year we  have him on glucosamine and it helps. His eyes and hearing are not what it used to be but his spirit and antics are high.
I hope your enjoying your new home and all is well.So nice to see you post. Sending hugs to your senior boy Roo.

Katy has arthritis that is pretty bad. We give her many supplements, acupuncture treatments and chiropractic adjustments. We also just opt for rest when weather makes her joints act up. She has suffered with this since she was 3 due to a knee deformation. She had knee surgery at that time - and had pins put in. Unfortunately she needs a pin removed next week :(.

Thanks for your comments and please excuse my outburst. In spite of Roo's good checkup, I wasn't having the best day. I'm sorry.

Figured you were having typical early spring weather up there and wishing for some heat and sunshine!   You used to talk about going an a cruise about this time every year.  I remember cause when I lived on the Northern Oregon coast, I felt the same way.  Have you ever been to Arkansas?  Sunny almost year round.  4 Seasons  We hardly ever get more than 2 or 3 days in a row where there sun doesn't shine.  You have to dodge a tornado or two, watch out for the snakes and bugs and put up with the humidity but I don't get seasonal humdrums any more!

Hope today is looking better for ya!  Kay

You figured right. Even though our winter hasn't been bad (snow-wise) but it's still too long for me!

It's funny you should mention Arkansas -- that's where Roo came from!!!
