Renaming Vote for this post

My Mum recently adopted a 5 year old Westie girl named Monique. We are not sure if we should rename her? She came from a breeder.

What do you think? Yay or nay?

Monique looks great in this photo, but her hair has grown considerably since then will wait to post a photo after she has a haircut.

Dianna
I have done a lot of rescue work with the Welsh and Westys.

We always told people to rename their rescues so they did not associate anything bad that may have happened to them in the past with their name.

Hopefully this will be helpful to you.

Love Sir William ^--^ and Allen

She's gorgeous!!!!  Congratulations!  I renamed my Suzie because I didn't like Sookie - her original name.  But Suzie is very close and she learned quickly her new name.  We left it up to the adopting family whether or not to rename.  If you go the re-name route, use both names at the beginning, gradually phasing out the old name.

Best of luck, and she is just precious.

When I got my Lucy they called her Westlie.......thought it was almost as bad as just calling her dog. I just called her Lucy Westlie for a few days and started dropping the Westlie and no problem...think she likes Lucy better too!!

Connor's 1st name was Snowflake, then it was Cesar.  When we decided to adopt him the foster mom called him Connor for us so he got used his new name before we got him.  They adjust   to new names pretty quickly.   By the way she is beautiful.

Bless your mom for adopting Monique!  Funny about this.  Our westie, Minnie, came from Little White Dog Rescue out of Omaha Nebraska and her name was Monique.  The foster mom said she wasn't really responding to the name.  We talked more about it and decided on trying "Minnie".  And it stuck.  So she has been "Minnie" for 6 years.  Just funny to see another westie named Monique.  Cute picture of Monique!  Good luck!

Re: Renaming Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

Thanks

Her new name is Mollie.

Mollie is at the groomers up the road (not our regular groomer) this afternoon. She was in real need of a haircut. She had previously been a show dog and was stripped (the photo I attached before wasn't how she looked when she arrived). She won't have the traditional Westie cut but neither do any of my girls, we find it too much to upkeep.

I've attached a before pic below (Foster or Foz is standing beside her), will do the after photos when she gets back.

Wow...she is a really beautiful Westie...both before and after pictures.  I can see the benefit of renaming her, but I really like the name Monique.  Mollie is  a great Westie name, too though.....

We know that she will have a wonderful new life with your mum.

Izzy is ADORABLE!!!!

Re: Renaming Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

While Monique is a pretty name, it sounds more like a poodle name to me!

I was named Boo Boo, long long ago. Mom changed my name to Roo (actually it was RUFUS, but I only get that if I'm naughty!). But I also have several Roo-like nicknames and know them ALL, so I think that name-changing is not a biggie. Mom often says pups name themselves and I think that is kinda true.

BTW, she's a beauty! Congrats!

Your mum must be thrilled having this beautiful little girl added to her clan. She's lovely and I like the name change to Mollie. Willie's foster mom changed his name and I never re-named him as it fit him so well.

Great that you included the before and after shots of Mollie after her  grooming. They did a nice job and she looks great and very happy. Love the shot of Izzy popping her head in the frame. She is sooo CUTE!

Re: Renaming Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

She is so lovely, a few piddling accidents so far but to be expected. She is going home today with my parents and Foster. My girls have been a little subdued with her around as the minute they go to play or rough house she rushes over to get between them. They look a little confused by her intervention. She was playing with Izz earlier in the day but we stopped them after awhile just in case she got a little rough with Izz. She's quite a big girl and could stand to lose some weight. Mum said she loves to go for a walk and she really has found the ideal home with them as they go every day and some times twice a day. They have a beach nearby.

Izz never misses an opportunity to get in the middle of things. Izz and Maddie play quite roughly but I've never had to stop them. They seem to know how far to push one another.

Izz is more like my Hannah as in she loves to be picked up and cuddled whereas Maddie is more like Kelsi she loves to sit there and be patted but prefers to keep all 4 paws on the ground. Izz is quite a calm girl whereas Maddie is a little more nervous and excitable. But they are a really good match for one another.

Foster is 12 now and not really playful but I am sure he will love having company at home. Usually Mum and Dad (they are retired) have to take him with them when they go out and if they can't they have to leave him home alone. But now they have Mollie at least on the odd occasions he will not be on his own.

Mollie is a beauty Diana, and I'm glad your Mom changed her name. Monique is too French for a highland gal.   The after grooming photo is very nice and she looks so relieved to get rid of the 'show dog' look.

Re: " they go to play or rough house she rushes over to get between them"  Coming from a breeder, she may have been the matriarch and interrupted any fights that may have been starting.

I love the pic of Izzy, she is growing up so fast

hugs, Theo

Re: Renaming Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

Mum said Mollie was playing with Izz for quite awhile this morning before I got up which is great as Izz loves to play and usually only has Maddie to play with. Foz isn't playful. Mum also said they were both licking each other in the face non stop for quite awhile. I've seen Maddie do that to Foz and he turns his head and then you can see him slightly lift his lips, on odd occasions you can hear a little growl but he's very good with them. Mollie and Foz went home today so no doubt it will take a little while for her to settle into her new home with my parents. My girls slept all afternoon, then they had a wrestle and now are asleep again.

Re: Renaming Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

Thanks everyone.

They have now gone home to their place and I am sure she will really love it there. Now that all us kids are grown up and gone Foz (he's 12) gets treated like royalty and walked once a day some times twice, he goes for drives in the car. He certainly wants for nothing. He has his own armchair but he is not above stealing Dad's when he gets up. Dad usually just sits in another chair, never thought I'd see that day. Dad was always (when we were kids) insistent that a dog belonged outside. When their new house was built he made some comment about no dogs inside and Mum told him that she wouldn't be moving in if that was the case. Of course she got her way.

Dad wasn't thrilled with the name change (hates the name Mollie). I said to Mum Molly is a common popular dogs name. She looks more like a Mollie than a Monique. Plus Monique is too hard to shorten, apart from Mo or Mon.

My girls slept all afternoon after they left, the were back wrestling for a couple of hours at a time in the evening and then back to sleeping.

Mollie has settled into her new home well. She has been to the beach each day, the first day they let her off the lead and she ran around in circles excitedly. The 2nd day she found and rolled in stinky seaweed which resulted in a bath.

She sleeps well, uses the dog door, only a couple of little accidents inside which was to be expected.

Dad was 'babysitting' his words when I rang them yesterday.
