Oh Theo, I'm praying you are safe from the fires
In 1999 the US Forest Service started a brush fire
near my parents city in New Mexico.
It was out of control by the next day.
In the following 10 days it burned into my parents city
and burned within 2 houses of my parents house
In that 10 days the fire destroyed approximately 160 homes
The fire was so bad that the entire city was forced to evacuate
Because my parents house was so close to the burn zone
they weren't allowed to return to their house for 6 weeks.
Immediately after the fire my parents were wondering if their house survived.
A good friend of ours that was allowed to return to his home in two weeks
drove by my parents house and called them and told them the house was okay.

Theo is in Ontario - the horrible fires are almost on the other side of the country in Alberta.

The stories coming out of Alberta are mind-boggling. Some of the videos of what people are enduring just trying to leave put tears in my eyes. Can you imagine sitting in your vehicle, stuck in bumper to bumper traffic, with out of control fires on both sides of the road - close enough that burning embers are landing on your car?!

So tragic. :(

My worst fear is for the pets that were left behind as ppl were not allowed to their homes from work.  There are lots of people helping out with rescuing them though so I hope there are not many losses.

My heart aches - for the people and GOD I hope no one left their pets behind.

The stories that came out of New Orleans after Katrina just about killed me.

Didn't realize you'd lived there, it must be so hard for you to watch. :(

I was just reading about 2 airlines up there that are allowing people to bring their pets on board when they are evacuating and I think the article said they were not charging the owners for their pets' fares. If this is true, I say WAY TO GO!!

Here's a link to an article on Canada North evacuating pets and ppl.

This mornings news is here, copy and paste link:
 http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton

The wildfire outside of Fort McMurray, once measured in football fields, now sits at more than 2,000 square kilometres, three times the size of Edmonton.  They are estimating that it will grow to 3,000 sq km by tonight

This is an excellent article with all the stats.  There is a GIF here showing how the fire grew , copy and paste the link
