I rang my old vets today Vote for this post

I rang my old vets today who we used to go to in Herefordshire and spoke with Kate who used to look after all the dogs and explained about Nimby...she suggests if I think the steroids are upsetting her and making her distressed then say to the vet if she can be weaned off the steroids and see if she does cough without them...if she starts up again then put her back on them, she says the dose Nimby is on should not really cause her much distress apart from as we know drinking more and hunger...having said all this she has not seen Nimble for a couple of years but she said some older dogs do have a sort of OLD Dog Lung...I guess like people and things are not brand new anymore !....I explained that the cough had stopped really even before the steroids were given to her...so I wondered if it is an allergy thing...anyway I have nothing to lose my asking my new vet and if she coughs after I have stopped the meds then it shows I was wrong and she will have to start on them again....having said all this Nimby is not as shaky as when she was on the 5mg for her back pain  and now I have halfed the dose over the last few days....I want to give Nimby the best quality of life without making anything worse....we have been here before all of us...Is it better to have a good normal life without meds or On meds and miserable and not yourself?...or lower dose as I am doing?...Nimby goes back on Monday am so  we will see  then.....Thank you for letting me voice all this with you ..it helps, also my old vet said If I had any other concerns to call her again which was so nice...I offered to pay over phone for her time but she said not to.....Hugs Annie and Gang xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

It is great that your old vet gave you help. Always a good idea to have more than one vet in your corner. Hope it turns out OK.

Love Sir William ^--^

I've always been a fan of giving the losest dose of meds and going from there. If Nimby does well without the steroids, all well and good, but if she needs a low dose,  her body hopefully will adjust to that after a time. She's a terrier after all, and her spirit will see her through. My vet knows I worry myself to death over everything and she has told me more than once, "Don't overthink things, let nature and time do their job." We continue to pray for Nimby and send healing thoughts and energy to her. Give her a big hug from us.

It's a balancing act, for sure.  With Sophie, at first we thought (hoped) it may be allergies, but Benadryl didn't help her.  So we ended up with the lowest course of steroids possible, and that's been her maintenance for the past 4 years now.  So, it keeps the coughing to a minimum, but it makes her hungry, drink a lot of water, and worst of all, makes her restless.  She is probably 15 now, and every old dog I've had at that age, sleeps a lot.  Not Sophie!  I wish she would sleep more, but I know it's the steroids.

I think we just do the best we can for them.

Hugs to Nimby!

Sherrie

Hi Annie, I'm glad you got a second opinion about Nimby's cough.
I too am a minimalist when it comes to drugs and pets.
The lowest dose possible.
It sounds like Nimby's cough may have been allergies and
I will pray that is all it was. And how about her back?
Is she in any pain do you think?

It's good that you can ask your old vet for advice, a second opinion never hurts.

I know I struggled with Hannah and medication she had such a sensitive stomach and at times taking her off meds was what was best for her but that said she didn't have a back issue.

She was on a low dose of prednil for years, I hate giving it to her but I had no choice as she was tearing herself apart without it. But then she developed a mass in her abdomen and of course I now wonder if the drug caused it. I guess I will never know. But I've always been an advocate of quality over quantity when it comes to my dogs.

I guess whether you're human or an animal, old age just sucks!  Hope she will be ok.
