Patti and Allie Update Vote for this post

Hi everyone - I realized reading Diana's post that I hadn't updated my friends here in awhile.

I can't believe it was less than 6 months ago that my heart was broken when I lost my beloved Molly. I loved my girl so much that I still can't change my name on here. I love to see her name and be reminded of that beautiful sassy girl.

But wow....little Miss Allie has filled the Molly-sized hole in our hearts just fine.

I had forgotten how much work puppies are. There were times I felt like we'd captured a wild animal and were trying to tame it. Ha ha. She was a MAJOR handful. She had more attitude than I expected and was the strongest-willed puppy I'd ever known.

She is now 7 months old. In the last 5 months that we've had her, she has grown into a beautiful, sweet, smart, fun-loving girl. We did  puppy kindergarten with her through a local dog training club, and that was a good investment of time for all of us.

We've also been able to visit her birth family a few times. It is good for her to be around a stable pack of Westies. She loves playing with her mom and her sister, and it's good for her to be reminded every now and then that she is NOT the boss of everything. :) She very quickly re-learns her place there and those visits have helped turn her into a sweet calm girl (finally) .

We love her so much.

I'm trying to post a photo of her, but it's not showing up on preview so I'm doing something wrong. I can never remember how to post photos here so hopefully Theo can save me when she gets back online. :)

You were all so kind to me when I was in the depths of despair about losing Molly, and so I thought maybe you'd like to hear some good news. Little Miss Allie is the center of our lives, and we are looking forward to many many happy years loving on this girl!

You're welcome :). Give Allie a hug too - if you can slow her down 😉.

Thank you. Yeah, she has terrier-tude in spades. See that jaunty look in her eye? But she is turning such a good girl and we love her so much.

Unattended shoes are still not safe though. Ha ha.

Oh, she's beautiful! And, if there was no terriertude, you'd think something was wrong! I don't know if it's Emmie or our age, but she's the most strong willed of the three Westies we've had, but it's all worth it in the end.. I'm sure you feel the same!.

Oh Patti, so glad Allie is helping you get over Molly.
As you can see I can't let go of Iver either and post his name with every post.
I love the picture of Allie, she is a real beauty.
A Westie puppy sounds like a lot of work.
I'm trying to decide if I'm up to it and getting a Westie puppy
or adopt an older Westie from Westie Rescue of California.
It will take me a while to decide while I try to find a good breeder.
God bless little Allie and Molly, too

Patti, she is gorgeous.

She looks quite a bit bigger than my Izzy but still has some growing to do.

Westies definitely are strong willed and stubborn. Even my Kelsi was, if she didn't want to do something she would dig in her heels. Hannah was the same, very bossy. I found toilet training my older 2 so frustrating. Maddie is pretty easy going although if she sees a dog thru the window she will run out and bark, I am working on it with her. Izzy so far is pretty good I just have to pick up the spray bottle with water and vinegar and she stops doing whatever she is doing. Maybe I should show her the spray bottle at ear drop time, that's the only time I struggle with her.

Hi Allan - thank you. I promise she does indeed have a good life with us.

Deb, yes, I agree - totally worth it!! I wouldn't trade her for anything. It was really hard for the first 2 months or so, but it is getting easier with every passing day now.

David, I don't know if I'd do a puppy again. At least right now, while the memories are still fresh. Westie puppies might be the cutest thing under the sun, but sweet mercy those little fuzz balls are 24/7 work! Allie would love a brother or sister, but I don't think I have the energy for another puppy....so we too are thinking about an adult rescue. I keep my eyes open. Can't wait to see what you decide to do!

Diana - she's 14 pounds now. Molly was 15 fully grown. I'm curious to see how big Allie is once she's full grown. Her mom is 15 pounds too, so she might be about done. We'll see, she loves to eat! And isn't it funny how they all have their own quirks. Molly was a beast to potty train too. Allie got the whole potty outside concept down within the first week, and the only accidents inside after that first week were all our fault. However, where we struggled with her was around her attitude. She wanted to be the boss in the worst way. I wasn't prepared to have a 4 pound puppy stare me in the eyes and challenge me the way she did! Thank God the breeder and our local dog training club helped me out. I shudder to think of all the mistakes I would have made otherwise.

The good news is that she's awesome now. She understands her place in our household and is a happy, healthy girl.

Life is good. :)

Re: Patti and Allie Update Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

Izzy is 6kg which is about 13 Pounds. Maddie she was 8.2kg at last weigh in (18 pounds). Kelsi would vary from in the mid 8 kg's to the early 9kgs (18-20 Pounds). Kelsi was a longer bodied Westie. Hannah was petite she was only ever 13 pounds she never varied much at all. Our groomer and she was also a Westie breeder called her a miniature Westie.

Maddie and Izzy started toilet training when they were quite little so by the time they came home with me @ 8 weeks they had a good understanding of the process which made it so much better for me, a couple of little accidents but nothing like Kelsi and Hannah. I went to bed night after night in tears when they were little as they just never seemed to get the hang of it and then all of a sudden it clicked. What a relief.

Rescue wasn't an option for me, we don't seem to have a lot of Westie rescue groups here, one I know of won't adopt to someone who works full-time and the other person that I now know of who deals at times with Rescue Westies does but I needed a playmate for Maddie and didn't want to wait. She had already been on her own nearly 2 months and the longer she was on her own the more anxious she became. I guess going from 2 'sisters' to none in 7 weeks was unsettling. I could have taken on a young female Westie on breeders terms but I said no as I am not keen to share and it would worry me. Now that Izzy is de-sexed I am a bit more relaxed as it worried me leaving her home with Maddie that someone might steal her to breed from.

I love the idea of them getting a second chance but Westie rescue is not as common place here as it is in other countries. I think for now 2 Westie is more than enough for me and my bank account.

Mollie (Mum's latest Westie) didn't come from rescue, she is 5 1/2 and came from a breeder, she is a real sweetheart. Lily (my sisters previous Westie) came along at 5 years old from a breeder. And Foster (Mum's Westie boy) also came from the same breeder at age 5 or 6. It's not very common for adult Westies to become available here from breeders.

Riley (now spelt Ryley) is a rescue Westie. My sister didn't want a puppy and she already adopted quite recently Zharli aged 5 (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) from a breeder. I think Ryley will fit in well, he will be 5 I think in late November.

I struggle a little with Izzy when it comes to ear drops, today was a slightly better day, but she's determined and so am I.

What a cutie Allie is beautiful.

She sure has grown.

Our Levi is also strong willed  he wants things his way and that is most of the time at the beginning of our walks.

 Moshe  was a little easier.

I know how hard it is raising a puppy but what a joy when they get a little older.

Enjoy it.
