SAGE UPDATE Vote for this post

This was posted by Sage's Mom: Posted Saturday, about 4:30 pm, eastern time

Sage's doc says she looks better today than yesterday. She eats as much food as they will put into her mouth, and I'm sure she wants more. She drinks on her own. The intestinal bleeding has slowed but not stopped. On the downside, she is completely blind. Worse, she is totally paralyzed from the neck down.

Re: SAGE UPDATE, another Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

Another update on Sage from her Mom:
The vet called. Sage is completely blind. She's clearly trying to get up.They tried to help her stand but she can't. The bleeding in her intestines has slowed but not stopped. She's not getting as much food as she wants because
they don't want to overload her stomach. She's been on injectible anti-seizure meds but today they'll try pills. She may need to be on the pills at home too, but we can wean her off them if she does well. She's improved and is definitely fighting back. They'd like to see her able to stand at least a bit before sending her home. I'm wondering how I, in my condition, could ever care for a disabled dog when I can't even care for myself. But I would do anything for Sage.

Wow I am sorry to say this but it doesn't sound good. Is she still paralyzed? I think even an able bodied person like me would find it difficult to care for her if that's the case, of course I'd try. Poor little Sage. They are nasty little things those toads. Will keep hoping for the best for Sage and her owner.

Sage sounds like a fighter! Hopefully she will continue to improve. Do you know if her paralysis is permanent or reversible? Will continue to pray for Sage. Louise, Caesar, and Murphy

Dogs that lose their vision tend to do very well in their homes, provided that furniture is not moved. They are so resilient that it is unbelievable. I pray that Sage has a full recovery. She is definitely a fighter.
P.s. Charley couldn't see well at all during the months leading up to losing him... He got around the house well, I blocked steps with baby gates.

This morning's update Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

"I haven't been able to speak to a vet yet this morning but I talked to a "tech." Sage looks better than yesterday. She's still laying on her side (being turned every 2 hours.) She's being hand fed and eating all her food. They sit her up and she will drink water on her own. The tech said she looks around when she hears voices. I asked if she isn't blind, the tech wasn't sure. She hasn't had another seizure, is still on antibiotics. These are small steps, but they are steps! She improves every day! And it's only been 60 hours since the toad incident, even though it feels like weeks. Sage still needs to be lifted up in prayer for total healing. Thanks to all our friends around the world who have prayed and donated. "

Any improvement on the paralysis side. I didn't realize Hawaii also had Cane Toads, deadly little buggers, we have them. .

Sage is improving little by little and for that we should all be grateful. Time and prayer can work wonders and we're praying that she "comes back" from this horrible ordeal. Thank you for the continued updates.

Re: SAGE UPDATE, MONDAY Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

Got this from Facebook:

An early morning update on our Westie friend Sage Hanan from her family visiting her last evening. This is so much more than we could have hoped for in only 4 days time. Sage is a trooper!

We just got back from visiting Sage. Today is her fourth day in the hospital, and each day she has made huge strides. First her seizures stopped, which was huge in itself, but she was still paralyzed, rigid, and blind. She didn't respond to us being there. The second day she definitely knew we were there, struggled and whined. Yesterday, Day 3, she could still only lay on her side. She wagged her tail and waived her arms. She cried a lot when we left. Today, Day 4, she is laying on her belly, sees clearly, and crawled to her water. She sat upright for a short time and pushed with her back legs, but couldn't stand. I know there are good things waiting for us tomorrow!

From Sage's Mom:

Sage just needs to be able to put some weight on her back legs, and poop! Then she can come home. I'm hoping another day or two.
