I sometimes wonder..... Vote for this post

I've been on Facebook quite a bit of late and this lady from Sweden has posted a couple of photos of her Westie and her Cairn Terrier. Do people really not know what a Cairn Terrier is? The first time 2 people posted that they wanted a Scottie dog too, she said no it's a Cairn. Today a guy says 'is that a black Westie, where did you find him'. Are Cairn's not a popular breed or rare in some places? Surprised the heck out of me. When I asked the question someone posts 'Cairns come in many different colours??' So what it doesn't make them a Scotty dog or a black Westie!!

Around here (Central NY) Cairns are almost unheard of. Westies are a rare breed, and Cairns are even more rare than that.

I'm basically impressed when I meet anyone new around here who even knows what a Westie is. I've had people think Bichon and Maltese for heaven's sake.

Labradors and pit bulls/pit bull mixes are by fare the most common around here.

I found over the years is that WE all are dog people. WE all have good knowledge of dog breeds and every aspect of dog life.

On the other hand there are many of the public who are not dog people. So their knowledge is limited to whatever breed they grew up with.

I bred Welsh Terriers for years and people still thought they were baby Airedales.

Love Sir William ^--^

Trouble is the people who made the comments were Westie owners.

Here on the East Coast, Westies are rare--(might be 10 in our whole county) and I know of only a couple of Cairns. Noted, we're in a very rural area, but still...As for people knowing the differences between Westies/Cairns/Scotties, it's almost laughable. People who aren't familiar with the breeds just don't have a clue.

When meeting people while walking Emmy, I usually get a quizzical look when I tell them she is a Cairn Terrier so I always add "you know, like Toto in The Wizard of Oz".

According to the AKC breed popularity list (link below), Westies are at 40 and Cairns at 70 (for reference, Irish Setters are at 72). I think people have trouble identifying Cairns because of the wide variation in colors and similarity to other small terrier breeds.

When we had Katy (Westie) and Penny (Cairn), we were always the center of attention since they made such a wonderful pair.

Diana, I know what your talking about!  I am a dog person who is very, very much a Westie, Scottie, Cairn lover.  I have had the privilege of being owned and loved by two Westie's and two Scottie's in my life.  I can't begin to count how many times I have walked my Caesar and have been asked is that a Scottie or walked my Scottie kids and had people ask is that a Westie??????  These breeds are not the most common for sure but I just think they are the best in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!  Louise, Caesar and our three Angel's Murphy, Spencer & Casper!

It happens so often that people ask if Willie is a Scottie. I do have to explain and educate them on the Cairn terrier breed. Since adopting  Willie I have only seen cairns a few times so I think they must be fairly rare here.

I can understand to some extent people being confused over Scottish Terriers especially when they aren't black as most expect them to be. But I would have thought Cairn Terriers were pretty well known.

Cairns are more common here in the northeast U.S. than they were when we had Mishy. People think she was a Westie or Yorkie (from her photo). I saw a Cairn in Washington, DC the other day but her haircut was so awful, I wasn't sure at first if she was a Cairn or not. I did meet a Cairn/Scottie mix once. She had a slightly longer snout than a Cairn - more like her Scottie ancestors- but other than that, she looked Cairn to me. Cairn owners are always very nice and willing to chat about the breed. I'm glad Cairns are not more popular. Puppy mills are breeding enough popular dogs and the fewer people who know about Cairns the better,
