A Tail for All Times Vote for this post

A Tail for All Time

By Earth Dogge Mulligan

Copyright 2016

You know, when you go to the Rainbow Bridge, you’re made whole. All your
injuries are healed. All your lamenesses repaired. Maimed limbs, missing eyes,
lopped off ears are replaced with brand new, factory-fresh models.
If you know anything about me, you know I went through the vast majority of my
life with basically no tail. We cairns were bred to have thick, sturdy tails –
all the better to remove us from various quarry holes. Reach in the hole, grab
the terrier by the tail and haul him out. That was the plan. My life turned out
a little different. When Dollface and Jugbob picked me up at my foster mom’s
house all those years ago – I had a little, blond nub. I adjusted easily to my
missing part. I learned to wag my rear end, and I was dang good at it! Quite
frankly, I learned that tails were over rated. I never looked back, so I never
cared what was back there. So imagine my surprise when St. Peter asked me one
day when I wanted to look at new tails.
“What’s wrong with my nub?” I asked.
“Nothing’s wrong with it. But this is The Bridge. Maimed dogs are made whole
here,” he said.
“I never thought I wasn’t whole,” I growled. “As a matter of fact, I always
thought I was a whole lotta fun!”
“Now, ED, don’t go all terrier on me,” St. Peter said, backpedaling. “I just
wanted you to know that tails are among the accessories available for pups who
want one. Some pups on the Bridge have lost way more than a tail, and we
replace those parts up here. I was not – I repeat – NOT implying that you are
anything less than perfect now or then.”
“Dang good thing, buddy,” I said, scratching off with my hind feet for emphasis
while flashing my upper canines for good measure. “Terriers don’t take
criticism well,” I mumbled, as I eyed his ankles for tooth placement.
“Well let’s just look at a few – just so you know what’s here, should you
change your mind,” he said.
And so we trotted off to the Retail Room! The Retail Room! Get it?! Anyway, the
hardware – I should say software – in that room is beyond compare. There’s a
tail for every rear end – big ones, little ones, fuzzy ones, slick ones – even
invisible ones for Old English sheep dogs and corgis. I stopped and stared at
the bounty, unsure of which one to try first. Seeing my angst with such a
selection, St. Peter stepped in to help. At least he thought he was being
helpful.
“How about this one?” he asked, holding up a tail that would look perfect on
the retreating end of a beagle.
“Naw,” I said. “Perfect for cleaning bottles, but too bushy for me.”
“This one?”
“Good Heavens NO! What’s that for? A rat?”
“Well no,” St. Peter said, looking a little deflated. “A whippet.”
“A whippet? Good. Whatever a whippet is can have it,” I said in disgust.
I looked at the variety of tails, but none of them grabbed me. And then I saw
IT in a corner. It was a little dusty, but it was all spiky and wide-y and
wonderful! And IT called to me like a long-lost friend.
“That’s it!” I exclaimed, and with a heartfelt aaarrrooo, I raced over to my
new tail.
“ED, I’m sorry, dude. That’s not…” St. Peter stammered.
“It’s perfect!” I shouted, dancing around in a fit of wiggles.
“But that’s not really a…”
“This is the BEST. TAIL. EVER!!!” I arrooed.
“How am I gonna attach…” St. Peter began.
And just then, I saw the attachment mechanism.
“With that!!!” I barked. Gotta tell ya, I was so excited I launched into the
zoomies right there in the Retail Room.
“Well, if you’re sure…” St. Peter said.
“YES!!!” I cried.
“Do you want me to take off the old one?” he asked, dropping to his knees and
picking up the attachment device and my new tail.
“No no!” I said. “Dollface loves my nub. Just stick the new one on it.”
So St. Peter got to down to the business of attaching my new tail.
“Stop wiggling, ED!" St. Peter ordered through gritted teeth.
"Getting a grip on your nub is hard enough.”
But with a few more minutes and some saintly grunting and determination – I was
retailed!
With my new tail installed, I burst out of the Retail Room and right into the
snappinese. She turned and gaped in stunned silence at St. Peter. He shrugged
and said, “His choice.”
My excitement infected everybody – even the snappinese who broke into the zoomies,
and I gave chase! Around and around we ran! Darting here and there. Weaving in
and out of angels, everybody laughing at our joy. Now I finally have some
cornering capabilities.
“Where did the Mulligan boy find…” came the voice of Gabriel, the archangel.
“What’s he doing with that…” he stammered, dipping a shoulder to avoid a
collision with my tail as he walked up on the best zoomie session ever.
“He picked it out himself,” St. Peter said.
“Where did he find…” Gabriel asked.
“The Retail Room.”
Around and around the snappinese and I zoomed, my new, now dustless tail
flashing in the glorious sunlight.
“He’s gonna put somebody’s eye out with that thing,” Gabriel warned, jerking
back his chin as I shot in front of him, my new tail just missing his nose by
inches.
“Now, Gabriel,” another voice said. “This the Rainbow Bridge. Nobody loses eyes
up here.” St. Peter and Gabriel turned to see The Lord Himself, walking among
the angels and creatures on the Bridge. The saint and the archangel suddenly stood
straighter, drawing their shoulders back at attention.
The Lord stopped and watched the zoomie session. He broke into a wide smile.
And a laugh that sounded like a thousand tinkling bells filled the
Heavens.
“Good job, Peter,” He said, as I swung by at full tilt. “It suits him.” He
turned and walked away.
“Whoa!” Gabriel exclaimed, releasing his shoulders a bit so his wings touched
the ground. “I thought you were done for. That thing’s not exactly factory
issue,” he said, gesturing toward my tail. “And HE made the factories,” he
said, nodding his head toward the retreating figure.
And so when I meet Dollface on the Rainbow Bridge, she’ll find my little
wheaten bottom festooned with an aerial antenna common to suburban rooftops in
the early '60s, the kind that beamed signals for all three major networks AND
PBS mind you, to millions of black-and-white televisions with little bitty
screens in real wooden consoles. This gleaming hunk of spiky aluminum will be
attached to my nub with a red, white and blue shoelace. I think she’s gonna
love it!

Mary Alice, I'm sure you don't remember me. I posted a fair bit in my early years here, then life interfered and I got busy and wandered away.

I sure "know" you though. And I "knew" ED, and the snappinese, and I sure as heck know your writing style.

You've written some brilliant things through the years, but this is beyond outstanding. Thank you, so much, for sharing this here.  You made me tear up, but in a happy way, and it was beautiful.

Oh, Mary Alice....thank you for such a wonderful story from our dear friend ED.  We have missed his stories!  I laughed, I cried and then cried some more.

I would love to visit the Rainbow bridge and see all of our old TC friends just one more time.  There are so may there now....it breaks my heart.

Please take care of yourself and come back and check in again, soon.

Love and hugs,
Jeanie and Annabel

P.S. Annabel wants to know, if ED has met her big "sissy" Jolly and also little Hattie?

Mary Alice....you probably don't remember me, but I was on long ago with my Lily.....this was the best post ever! I remember ED and the snappinese and all of you and I could just imagine ED doing this...I laughed and cried and laughed again. With so many of the doggies I was familiar with now at Rainbow Bridge....this is just bittersweet. My Lily will be 13 in a few weeks and is doing wonderfully and I am so very thankful for her great health and her antics keep us laughing all the time. Thank you so much for posting this!
