Mr. Copper Head Vote for this post

Yesterday afternoon my Vet man specialist called my Mummy with the results of all those liver biopsies the surgeon took.  The doctor said the tests showed mild liver inflammation and scar tissue.  That was the good news.  What it did show was high levels of copper and zinc plus lead!!!!  That is NOT GGOOD!  Honestly Mom, I have not been eating any thing made out of metal!  My Mummy told me that Westie livers sometime have a problem with copper retention.  The Vet Doctor said zinc goes along with that but we can't figure out where the lead is coming from!!!!!  The Vet specialist has prescribed two medicines, D-Penicillamine and Ursodiol which will help me get rid of those metals.  He also put me on a special prescription diet,  My first Scottie brother Spencer also had a copper issue and he was on the same diet and he loved it but Spencer would eat anything!  My Mummy is going to try to figure out where the lead is coming from.  Our house was built in the 1990's so it should not be from paint.  She is going to buy some lead testing kits and is going to test everything she can in the house for lead!  So dear friends I Caesar have a new name.  No more Mr. Good Times.  My Mummy says I am now Mr. Copper Head!!!!!!!!!  Oh no, I like Mr. Good Times better!!!  What do you all think????   Love a very confused Caesar!!!!

Oh my goodness Caesar... well, it is a good thing the biopsies were done. Now mommy can get you on the mend!!

Could the copper and zinc be from the food you were on??   Your mom could do some research at the link below (Westie Health from Ears to Tail by Katie Wyatt) and see if she can find any answers on these issues.  She can also post questions and get help from Katie and other Westie owners who have dealt with this.

I still think you are 'Mister Good Times' and I am sure your mommy agrees.
love and hugs, Theo and Willie

From Westies Health from Ears to Tail:

COPPER STORAGE DISEASE

According to this article, the vet has you on the right meds to eliminate the copper.  It also states that Zinc acetate helps to bind copper preventing its absorption, so perhaps that is why zinc showed in the test results.

Something to consider "Affected dogs are placed on a low copper diet, preferably with less than 0.5 PPM of copper. "

Yes Theo the copper storage issue is big in Westies and other terriers.  The two meds the Vet Internist put Caesar on will help eliminate the excessive copper, zinc and lead in his liver.  The Hill's l/d Liver Care Prescription Diet he put Caesar on is low in copper, has appropriate level of zinc for liver dogs, and moderate levels of high quality protein.  One of the functions of the liver is protein synthesis so Caesar's liver needs lower levels of protein to deal with while he is healing.  My first Scottie boy Spencer had the problem and did very well on this diet and treatment.  He lived a wonderful and happy 16 1/2yrs.  The amazing thing about our livers is the liver is the only organ in the body that can regenerate itself.  Caesar's liver biopsies showed some evidence of this process.  The other positive thing is this condition was caught early before the liver damage became severe.  Fortunately I am blessed with a very fine and well informed primary Vet who routinely does appropriate labs on my terrier kids as they age.  That is how we were able to diagnose this problem early!  We are also blessed here to have a very fine Veterinary Specialty Referral Center and Hospital.  The Vet Internist  my Caesar saw also saved my Scottie Spencer's life!  His liver was failing quickly and he also had a severe bile duct infection.  This doctor figured it out, put him on the appropriate treatment and saved his life.   Louise, Caesar, and Angels Murphy & Spencer!

Lub, Emmie
Mommy here! That is so strange about the copper and lead in Caesar's system, especially since you say your first Scottie had it too. I'll be very anxious to see if you find out what's causing it! I'm sure it will be something you'd never guess would cause the problem!
Love, Deb, Emmie, and Angel Kelsie

Have you ever had the water in your house tested.  Are you on city water or well water. That may be something to think about too. Hope you get to the bottom of it especially since your other dog had it.

No I have not but you can bet I will!!!!!!!!!!!  We are on city water here that comes from Lake Michigan.  I intend to check everything in this house for lead.  My first Scottie boy did not have any lead in his liver but did have the Copper issue.  I did put him on bottled spring water.  I am considering doing that with my Caesar.  That would eliminate the lead issue as well as excessive minerals.  City water systems tend to add minerals to their water to improve taste.  Louise

As I was reading this I immediately thought of your water and what it might contain.  We, here in Maine, know that our well water has a higher level of arsenic and because of that we drink bottled water and that is also what we give to Layla.  Will be interesting to see what your results are as you begin testing various things.  Hopefully you will get to the bottom of the problem.  I wonder if your vet might have an indication, from other clients, if this is predominant in your area?

Good news Caesar, I'm glad the vet can get the copper under control.
Hoping your Mom and vet can figure out where the lead is coming from.
Maybe the water? Right now the Tacoma area is having a bad problem
with lead in the school drinking water. Old lead pipes.
