Two Questions Vote for this post

After almost 20 years of living with Westies, it seems funny to be asking these questions, but we have never had a PUPPY before and things do change with time so here goes:

1. Best Puppy kibble, followed by what you fed after puppy stage?

2. Collar, harness or both? And what are your favorites? Pictures and details appreciated! (And regarding harnesses do you prefer the nylon strap kind or the kind that is fabric with nylon straps and why?)

Thanks, friends!!!

When we brought Emmie home, we fed her Iams Puppy because that was what the breeder had been feeding the pups and he recommended it. She's still on Iams Healthy Naturals with farm raised chicken. She's never had any skin issues so we're pleased. As for collars, we've always used lupine collars and leashes on our pups. They wear like iron. We tried switching her to a harness because she pulls so hard but she would have none of it! Wish we would have tried the harness first...

I use science diet and have for years even when I bred Welsh Terriers.

The puppy will outgrow their harness or collar very quickly so see what works well for you both.

Harnesses are hard to attach tags to so Riley wears a collar unless I am walking him.

Good Luck  Riley and Allen

We got Cindy, Penny, Katy, and Emmy as puppies and love the process of raising them. Every pup is different, especially those with terrier personalities!

To answer your questions:

1) We've always given high-quality GRAIN FREE kibble to our dogs. Start with the puppy size (small kibble) and transition to adult kibble after a year or two. None of our terriers ever developed skin problems (very common in Westies and to a lesser degree in Cairns), and I think a lot of that has to do with grain-free food. Two brands we use are Wellness lamb with barley, and Nature's Recipe chicken with sweet potato & pumpkin.

2) We often use a harness, especially with "pullers" like Katy - she ALWAYS had to lead the pack and would choke when on a leash. We took both Katy and Penny to obedience classes, but I was dismayed when the instructor required the use of choke collars during training ...will never do that again!

Emmy's harness is mesh in the front (chest area) and adjustable. As a puppy, we used a smaller size harness, but within a year she was pretty much full grown and fit the current harness. We also use a leash for short walks.

Hope this helps, and best wishes in your new puppy adventure!
