Emmy's rough week Vote for this post

Last Friday evening I was playing with Emmy on the floor, tossing a plush toy in her favorite game of fetch. She ran at me with the toy in her mouth, then suddenly dropped it and backed away, her mouth covered in blood. I snatched her up and discovered a front tooth was loose, so I applied a cloth until the bleeding stopped after a few minutes. She continued to lick her teeth for some time after that, but otherwise seemed unfazed.

Needless to say, I called her vet early Saturday and brought her in for an exam right away. The doc confirmed that her tooth was very loose and recommended an extraction soon, so we made an appointment for Tuesday morning. She noted that an adjacent front tooth was also crooked and said she would examine it during the extraction.

After her surgery, we were dismayed to learn that Emmy needed to have THREE (!) front incisors extracted which were all loose and angled forward. The vet said her teeth are otherwise clean and healthy, but front incisors are sometimes weakly rooted and can be pulled loose by vigorous tugging (which Emmy unfortunately loves to do).

Emmy is a small Cairn and the missing teeth are not really noticeable unless looking closely, but we're sad she had to go through the extraction and she's sad that her rough and tumble play is now off the table...

Poor Emmy! I hope she got a nice soft treat and lots of belly rubs for that ordeal.

We hope she feels better and does not miss her front teeth too much. I had a Welsh terrier that had to have some teeth removed and he was woozy for a while after the extraction.
He did OK but was very funny when he shook off the drugs.

Ah, bless her heart...I know how much terriers love their tug a war and I'm sure she'll have to adjust to no more of that. I've never had a dog loose a tooth like that (knock on wood!) but one of our cat's lost an eye tooth--just fell out! The vet didn't seem too concerned and said it just happens sometimes. We'll keep Emmy in our prayers and hope she heals quickly and is back to herself real soon! Please give her a big hug and smooch from Emmie and me!
Love, Deb, Emmie, and Angel Kelsie

Awww...sorry your sweet Emmy had to get extractions and her teeth are not allowing her to play tug games. I had the same with Willie.Had two lower incisors removed for him that were angled outward. He had weak roots too. We had to limit the tug games and he actually stopped on his own after the second year with us, think he was 7 at that time.He liked to dart and dash about the house instead, as I tossed toys.

Towards the end of his time with us he lost several teeth. One night he went to leap into his favorite chair and misjudged his landing and his face hit the chair arm and out popped his big canine tooth. I felt so sad about that happening, good ole dear Willie just seemed unfazed at what had happened... sweet baby. Took him to the vet and had him checked out. All was ok with his head and neck. He ate a bit slower after losing that tooth.

Oh Mark, I'm so sorry to hear of Emmy's dental issue, I hope she healed up quickly.  Casey had lost one of his incisors and I had no idea until I saw the gap LOL

Hoping Emmy is back to her tugging play, it is so beneficial to their well being both mentally and physically,
hugs, Theo and Willie xoxo
