Sand Fleas?? Vote for this post

We are planning to take Sophie with us to the beach.
Never giving a thought to Sand Fleas or really knowing what they are.  Sophie's Groomer mentioned to watch out for Sand Fleas, so I'm thinking they are little jumping things, you know, similar to regular fleas.  Well, imagine my shock when I google them and see these big nasty looking things!!!  YIKES!!
My question is:  how worried should we be about Sand Fleas being a problem for Sophie.
I'm still stunned at how big those things are, and that they are used as bait and that some people even eat them!!
Does any one have any experiences with Sand Fleas??

Sorry,Lucille,we have no experience with those horrible sounding things here in UK,The only thing we ever had once was with my old Cairn Eric...he used to wade along the seashore scooping up whitebait..his lymph nodes came up and we thought he had cancer!...but No,what it was ...Cattle get sand colic sometimes if they graze near shorelines and Eric had scooped up quite a lot of sand silica and this was what had made his Lymph nodes enlarge!...turned out he was fine but I lost some hair in the worrying!!...typical terriers worrying their mummy.Hope someone here knows more for you...Hugs Annie,Andrew and NimbySue  with wings xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

We're landlocked here in PA but I'm sure there are others who have had some experience with sand fleas. They sound positively horrible!

Well , we live at the beach and I used to walk at least 5 to 6 days a week for 5 miles tracking nest of turtles and when they came out the nest.
I loved it and never paid must attention but last week I took Levi and Winter right before we had a grooming appointment and when I picked them up I heard they had a flea. I was shocked too but as long as you give the dogs flea medication on time they would not live long those fleas.
We use Trifexis once a month. It is for fleas ,Heart worm and intestinal worms. It is not cheap but I love using it on Levi and Winter. I gave it to Moshe too .
We never had fleas using it except this last time when we first went to the beach and than the groomer. They get it every month right on time . I gave it today to them .It your dog had fleas protection they could not live long on the dogs if they had protection.
I guess many dogs do not get it and walk the beach too but never researched it before.
Good luck we will be going back to the beach. This was the first time that they had one in years and years just from walking the beach early in the mornng.
Good lluck,
Yoka,Levi,Winter and angel Moshe.
