Frustrating! Vote for this post

I have been in contact with a few rescue organizations about adopting a Westie or Cairn. One group in particular shows photos of available dogs and shortly after, posts that the dog has found his furever home and "doesn't even need to pack his/ her bags" meaning that the foster home has decided to adopt. Another rep said that my best bet (confidentially) is to foster. Hmmm. I am seeing a trend here. If I was interested in fostering (I'm not), I would have stated that in the beginning.

This weekend, I was asked if I had an interest in adopting one that just came into the program. Because of this, they could not give me very much information about her. What help is that? How could I decide if I had any interest based on very little information? I sent a bunch of questions that they couldn't answer and was then told that she might adopt the dog herself. Well, thanks a lot.

They are not shy about asking for donations, but apparently they are not interested in giving me answers to my questions.

Not to mention I had a look at their adoption application, their adoption contract ... It would probably be easier to adopt a child!!!

So I am not going to stress out over all this. I am very happy with Zena; she is proving to have very little "baggage," has great manners for a dog who formerly lived on her own, on the streets, is eager to learn and to please, and we are finding out that aside from being a sweetheart , is extremely intelligent.

I probably will always yearn for another Westie, based on the wonderful life I had with Roo, but I don't think that is going to happen. I just need to turn over that one little piece of my heart that I have withheld, and give it freely to Zena. She deserves that from me.

There is ONE person who is on the lookout for a Westie for me. I trust her implicitly since I wouldn't have had either Roo or Zena if not for her. If she finds one that is right for us, then I will trust that because she's never played games, is always supportive, and above all, honest.

Other than that, I think I've just about had it with these other rescue groups. Why torture myself over something that, in all probability, will never happen.

Thanks for listening, friends.

Hey Cheryl, read your post and feel bad that you seem to be getting the run around.  Below is a link to a rescue group in NE that does good work.  I have transported a couple of dogs in the past for the person that started Wag-n-Train Rescue.  She had done a lot of work with Little White Dog Rescue in Omaha and that is how I met her--I did owner surrenders/transport/homevisits for LWDR.  That is where Minnie came from. They don't have loads of dogs but you can peruse the page and see the cute little guys they do have for adoption.  BTW Roo was so fun to read about!  He was a very special boy 🙂  I am glad you gave a home to another that needed it!  Bless you for your kindness and caring!  I just wanted to give you another place to look. Here is the link and good luck in finding another pup that needs a good home:

I looked at it but they don't appear to do adoptions to NY. Too bad, but thank you!

I feel bad for you Cheryl, this experience should be a good one. I'm wondering if you're going to be like a lot of young couples I know who tried to adopt a baby and were frustrated for a long time. Just when they were about to give up, the baby they'd wanted for so long came their way. I'll keep you in my prayers and hope for good news in the near future.

I've had that feeling! My game plan for now is just CHILL! If my dear friend is able to find me a Westie, I'm sure it'll be a perfect match. Otherwise, just chilling!

Oh Cheryl, I hope things work out and you get a little westie.  I too have worked with Wag - n Train out of Omaha, and also LWD, they are both wonderful groups, Buster, Robin Presley came from Wag n Train,  they do such good work, it is to bad you can't get a dog from them.  To bad they don't adopt in NY.

you will get a westie, I  am sure little  ROO is working on it, he just wasn't found the right one/

Hi Cheryl,I am sorry you have had no joy yet in finding a Westie or Cairn...I am still missing Darling Nimby so very much...her zest for life and smiley happy nature and humour plus the last of the cairns we had...Andrew is a total opposite really apart from his funny ways  but I do understand all very individual, when we lost Emma and I tried Cairn rescue I was put in touch with someone but they wanted to re home an ex stud dog male but on the terms that whoever had him would not have him neutered just in case they decided to borrow him back and breed again from him!...That was a no no from me...just last week I have been in touch with a small breeder who knew the lady I had Ellie from and also Little Gremmie and may have someone in January but also I have a couple more avenues to go down but need to wait till we have moved in 2 weeks and just settle for a minute....I know I will never get another Nimby the same as you and Roo but  we must go with our hearts and that special one will be waiting in the wings so to speak for us...we will watch each others spaces and  send positive thoughts for a special day for us both.....Zena sounds wonderful...drew misses Nimby's  Top Dog Attitude and  she did show him the ropes when we got him and she was  someone for him to look up to somehow...when she barked or zoomed he took notice!!LOL...just need to wait a wee bit longer....Hugs and kisses to you all and Special kiss for Zena xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Re: Frustrating! Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

I hear your pain.  I searched in vain for a westie rescue as well.  For several years.  I hit some of the same closed doors that you did.  I gave up on rescue, and bought a puppy from a breeder with whom I became friends over several years, and now I have a son from that girl, and her granddaughter.  I had a lot of fun learning how to show them, and now very busy in agility.  Westies are not so easy to find, most of the old time breeders are retiring, and most sell pups with a contract that requires that the puppy be returned to them if it doesn't work out for any reason.  I wish you luck in finding your next Westie, and hope you can have a wonderful time with the dog you now have.

He is adorable! He looks just like Mishy at that age. I love the airs. Crossing my fingers for you! Cairn puppies are a lot of work though and as much as I love them, I don't want one. The rescue contract is the way it is because unfortunately not everyone is as loving and caring as you, as you know from Roo's past. There have been unfortunate incidents that I have read about that would make anyone want to hold their pups close and never let go!

They are probably going to require a fence yard for this little one. If that's the case, I'm out.

And honestly, I think I'd be crazy to take on a puppy. That's probably why a former friend unfriended me -- because I told her that as much as I would be honored to have one of her Westie pups, I had to decline. In spite of all my efforts to reach her, she has refused to have anything to do with me. I am dead to her.

What a adorable dog. He is soooooo cute and training goes by very soon. I prefer one that is trained but Moshe was a puppy too and he was very smart too.. had no trouble with him but I am now much older .2 dogs are very expensive! Levi hasaear infection and Winter had a check up.. it was a fortune for both . We have to come back with Levi next week..
Take care Cheryl.
