Seeking Advice on a second pup
Hello!I am new to the club and I'm so glad I found this site!
We have an almost 3 year old female Cairn Terrier (Stella) and we have been thinking about getting another dog and are leaning toward getting a Westie.
My question is for those of you with more than one dog, in your opinion, are we better off getting a male as opposed to a female? I had my heart set on a female, but after some things I've read, many people say introducing a female to a home where there's an already established female can be a nightmare.
Anyone have their own experience with this that they could share? Either with 2 females or a female and a male?
Thanks!

Re: Seeking Advice on a second pup
Welcome to the club.
I can't really answer you question, because I had a male and female together, they worked will, my female was a little bossy, but my male didn't really care. They got along well.
I do know that some friends of mine had female cairn and female scottie, they got along fine.
hopefully some of the other members can answer your question better.

Re: Seeking Advice on a second pup
Hello ,Its lovely to hear from you,We have had 6 Cairns in total including Biba who is 2 years old and our only one now and we have Andrew a West Highland boy.Andrew was rescued when we lost our Dear Border Collie Emma,Andrew was a friend for our remaining cairn Nimble at the time who was 14 then...They still had 2 issues which could have turned into a fight but soon parted before anything happened but Nimby was asserting her authority also over Andrew..he is the first West Highland we have had as at the time could not find a Cairn till last year when we got Biba at 17mths old...we have had dogs and bitches together and when we got Nimble at 3 we had another Cairn EllieMay...They met first before we did go and pick Nimble up from a good home(her and a Jack Russel were too aggressive with each other and we got Nimble as they knew we had always had cairns)..anyway the day we got Nimby and got her home Ellie just put her paw on the back of Nimbys shoulder as if to say....Listen I am Top Dog here!...they never had a cross word all the years we had them...yet years ago My old Cairn Eric ...he just hated our Border collie bitch and we had to be really careful of his aggression towards her when she was a puppy. When we got Biba last year she met Andrew and they did not seem to bothered with each other and Andrew is now about 12...I think he gets on better with her than he did with Nimby as He is sort of Top Dog now and was here before Biba if that makes sense...I find the Cairns a bit more fiery than the West Highlands though....Please stay in touch and keep us posted and hope to see another picture of your Cairn Girl...and hope others will reply to this also on the subject...Hugs and kisses Annie Biba and Andrew xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I forgot to add if you find another Cairn girl maybe you can introduce the two to each other and see just how they react before you decide...Hugs Annie xxxxxxxxxxx

Since I've only had one dog at a time (along with a house full of cats!) I can't really help you, but I'm sure there are others here who can. We're always so happy to welcome new members to TC and hope to hear more from you in the future!Love, Deb, Emmie, and Angel Kelsie

Re: Seeking Advice on a second pup
Great question! The Terrier Club was actually "founded" by Penny and Katy, our female Cairn and Westie.
After losing our very first Westie (Cindy) in 1994 at the age of 14, we fell in love with a Cairn puppy (Penny) and brought her home.
We knew about the similarities (and differences) between breeds since our neighbors had both a Cairn and Westie (both males). I'd always wanted a two dog household and by pure chance we came across a female Westie only two months later.
Of course I did my research and learned that yes, introducing a second female dog could be difficult. Our vet and a breeder both advised against it, but we took a chance and brought Katy home.
It was indeed a challenge for the first few weeks since Penny had already taken the Alpha position and we had to watch them very carefully and intervene several times (no blood was ever drawn). Katy learned to submit (most of the time) even though she ended up being quite a bit larger than Penny. They both got along famously for another 17 years and we treasure that time together with the both of them.
No doubt the fact that they were only two months apart in age and were introduced as very young puppies smoothed the transition. It also helped that my wife Evelyn was working from home and was able to keep a close eye on those two pups because, well, terriers will be terriers!

Re: Seeking Advice on a second pup
Glad to hear you are thinking about a new member of your household.
Prior to getting my Westies I bred Welsh Terriers for 20 years. All of our dogs were female and we bred out of our house only having one litter a year.
They all got along quite well with occasional disagreements. We also took back over the years Welshies that needed to be re homed. We did get a Welsh that we rescued from another breeders client that was a alfa dog and we had some very intense problems.
My suggestion is let your dog socialize with the new member before you make the decision. Possable foster a rescue till you make the final commitment .
Best of luck

Re: Seeking Advice on a second pup
Welcome Stella to the Terrier Club. You look adorable! I have one male cairn now named Grady that I got last April. I first started with a Female westie. Then adopted a Male cairn 3 1/2 years later. The foster mom was wonderful and let us have a meet and greet at her home and offered for us to call if we needed help. Maddie and our male cairn Willie were a perfect match together. Maddie was my alpha female and Willie loved his sister and got along well. Three years later I added a 5 year old female westie Emily. Emily was a alpha female in her breeders home. Maddie took top pack order then Willie and lastly Emily. Maddie would put Emily in her place if she tried to dominate Willie. It took some time for Willie to get along with Emily but they did become buddies.
Fostering is a good way to go with a rescue group or if you can find a good breeder in your area they may have a retired female or male that they may be letting go to adoption. Many times offering you helpful advice in training, setting up meet and greets and the option to bring back the pup if it doesn't work out with your dog. Best of luck in your search and hope you find a good little companion for your Stella.
Hugs Sandra & master Grady My Angels Maddie Willie Emily at the RB

Re: Seeking Advice on a second pup
As far as terriers go, have had two males at one time and they got along beautifully. No issues. At one time, we had a larger breed female dog and introduced a male Westie about the same age. The female dog turned out to be very aggressive towards the Westie. Now that we are retired, we have a male Westie, and even though we are home most of the time, we have no plans to add another dog. We're just too old and set in our ways!

Re: Seeking Advice on a second pup
Just wanted to add after seeing your profile, welcome to the club. And our Westie loves camping too, although I think most of our camping this year will be "driveway camping!"
