Not the carpet Vote for this post

Grady is now around 16 months and as cairns go still full of his puppy antics. Or should I say an unruly teenager. Ha ...He had us jumping up with a firm NO when we seen him get low and rough up the area rugs, tunneling under them proceeded with trying to drag them across the room. Out came the spray bottle but then it was a fight of wills working up to Grady barking and quick grabs of the throw rugs.It took giving him time outs in his Xpen to calm his unruly mission to drag the rugs.Cairns are very sensitive, if you get mad at them they get mad right back.lots of patience with a firm NO , short time outs many many times and some bitter apple on the rugs stopped him.

We thought we had it all under control till last week. We were watching TV one night and heard a few soft ripping sounds. Asked hubby where is Grady? Then heard more of these death ripping noises coming from under the sofa. Yep it's Grady shredding carpet. I get on knees and look under the sofa and there he is with a beard and face full of carpet .UGH..lil scamp! I've put things under the sofa so he can't get in there. I hope he'll grow out of this carpet destroying stage soon. For now we are stepping up his exercise, giving him toys to distract him when he starts to tunnel under the furniture and repeat NO to any teeth chewing on the rugs.
Has anyone had this problem? Any ideas to help me resolve his naughty chewing would me much appreciated. Thanks

Hugs Sandra & carpet beard Master Grady xox

Oh my stars Sandra, I can honestly say none of my pups ever ate the rugs! Our first Westie, Jaimie, did tear up a piece of vinyl flooring in the kitchen. Lordy, I'd forgotten all about that till I read your post! Hope someone can give you some useful hints. Grady, you are a scamp--an adorable scamp! LOL

Thank you Deb. Oh not the kitchen floor... Goodness I hope that didn't last long.Did she just grow out of the floor chewing I wonder.
Grady is not touching floors just the carpet. I was amazed to see Grady roll on the carpet after a bath like it was his personal bath towel. Or when he had his dinner running to the rugs to wipe his face along the length of the rug snorting is satisfaction like he just found the perfect napkin after his meal. But this carpet ripping is a whole other activity that is destructive behavior. Hope it's a short lived task and I can get it under control.

Sandra, she did grow out of it. Then, she began chewing on the baseboard and completely destroyed one of my kitchen chairs (chewed right through one of the rungs!) We were at our wits end, and one day, just like magic, she quit chewing!  They sure know how to push your buttons, but what would we do without them? LOL

LOL! Sorry to laugh (it's not funny getting your carpets shredded), but I loved your post. And yes, we've had this problem with all our terriers.

Penny and Katy once conducted a coordinated attack on our carpeting, both of them digging furiously at the SAME spot until they hit concrete slab. I spent hours trying to patch the hole in the carpet and padding - it never looked right after that until we laid all new carpeting a few years later.

As a puppy, Emmy loved to pull fibers from the edges of a carpeted ramp we made at the end of our bed. Those ragged edges are still there, a reminder of the little rat's fiendish act of destruction. She also shredded some draperies, entire TP rolls, and to this day she digs incessantly into a recliner in our guest bedroom because she smells that it was a favorite spot for Katy years ago.

Cindy (our first Westie) ripped up a huge section of kitchen vinyl flooring in the 80's, and even got behind a refrigerator (!) and shredded the insulation.

Terriers are so much fun!

Try a daily chewing session... Vote for this post Reply to this Message Reply with a quote

Oh Sandra, I forgot that you asked for some advice on Grady's chewing. It's clearly a puppy thing and will eventually wane, but what worked for us with Emmy is a daily rawhide chewing session.

I stock several 6 Inch Retriever Roll sticks and hold one for Emmy to gnaw on almost every night for 5 to 10 minutes. It's like a bonding session for us, and seems to satisfy her urge to chew on other things. Just be sure to limit the session and don't leave any rawhide sticks out or else 'lil Grady will polish 'em off in a jiffy!

Thanks Mark for the read and the excellent idea!!
It's good to laugh at these little determined rebel rousing cairns as we have earned it with our patience.  I really have kept a close watch on Grady so the damage has been minimal .Never know what he may do tomorrow ..
I giggled at Emmy in the video you shared of her digging away in Katy's chair. Goodness...once they get going at rooting and scratching it's a hands on removal or they could go on for a while.Grady will dig while I'm sitting in the chair, crazed digging away at the side of the arm and seat cushion UGHH!
I've used these smaller chews with Grady (seen in pic) from the time he was 5 months.Several nights a week only 15 minutes also hand holding them while he chews away.Yes it is bonding and helps him wind down in the evenings.I will look for the sticks you mention and give it a try.Sounds like they may hold up much better than what I am using now. Thank you for the helpful advice.

Sandra...Grady  sounds just like Biba was when we got her at 17 months!!...all those toys she destroyed and my Bra she chewed in half!...then swallowed the sock and had to get it removed by  being made to be sick at the vets!!...she is nearly 2 1/2 now and wild wild but has stopped the toy destroying but she has so many and  I have to say yes the cairns are sensitive and very very clever...Sneaky wee things!!,,,if Biba gets things she runs off in glee with them...but often under supervision I let her play with strong cardboard boxes  and she loves having toys and balls thrown into them!!...she has never chewed carpets which is good or even furniture....I think he will grow out of it...I never give Biba chews as she is a real gulpy and afraid something would get stuck but having said that she grabs  bits of dead bird or bunny legs if she gets a chance on walks   so I really have to watch that...and she still will try eat any poop ...Drews! her own! Stiggies! and fox and rabbit poop...Gross or what..she gets calmer in the evenings about 9pm.!..they will keep us young with antics or  more frazzled LOL!! They soon get bored with some toys and try find new things...Like Rugs!!
Big Hugs and kisses Annie Biba and Drew xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Yes Annie I do remember Biba going through her toys and her chewing the bra. It's a worry what they may swallow.I know Grady has giving me some gray hair.
that running with glee and devilish look as if to say I got it now and your not getting it back. I'm glad that Biba has grown out of it, gives me hope Grady will soon.
My Emily was also a poop eater. I tried so many remedies but none of them worked. She was so bad that I had to watch her like a hawk with bag in hand to get her jimmy deans just as she drops them or she would help herself on the spot.Yuck! And had to take Maddie and Willie out separately or she would watch and go in for the collection.I hope Biba out grows the habit.

Wow! You terriers make MISCHIEF look like an angel! Her name was Mischief for a reason... Of course my parents had 3 young children at the time so they didn't have good furniture or carpets or anything that couldn't be destroyed. Later on, Mischief used the bottom of the couch and the carpet to wipe her face after dinner. The things I remember her chewing were: Daddy's smelly old shoes, the squeakers out of squeaky toys and my brand new school library book and favorite paperback! I saved the books as a memory.

My "niece" Rupee, a Cattle Dog X, has the distinction of chewing through the car seat belt and baby car seat! She also bit through leashes and her gentle leader halter. She was one when they got her! She's 10 now and is still crazy. She'd bite through her halter if she could.
