Defiant? Who YOU? Terriers? NO! Never!  LOL! Isn't that like your middle name?

Remember, my dear beloved sister-child's name was MISCHIEF for a reason! Walk? OK. Walk where YOU want to walk? Oh no. Plop down in the middle of the road until we turn around. Walk? Nope don't feel like it. Plop down in the middle of the road. COME? What does that mean. Stop barking? Why? What's in it for me? Chicken? Meh. Got any hot dog? No? BARK BARK BARK. Go OUT? Why it's raining. I can't possible go OUTSIDE in the RAIN! Don't___! What does that mean? No? What does that mean? SUPPERTIME! Wait? What's this slop? I refuse to eat dog food! Gimmie people food! Hunger strike! Fetch? Nope. You go fetch for me so I can chew the ball to pieces. etc. etc. etc.

My "niece" Rupee, a Cattle Dog X, actually comes when she's called and walks well on a leash when she's in her halter. Unless she sees a bunny... or slips the halter. She understands "slow" when she walks too fast! My cousin Max, the Morkie, walks like a dream on a leash! A very new experience. He's enough terrier to be defiant and bark a lot and run away when he's off leash though.

Hmmmm.... which is more defiant a westie or Cairn? Having had two westies and two Cairns I say the Cairn wins paws down most defiant. Very determined to do what they want when they want to do it.
With Grady I have used a lead very early. Tying it onto my belt loop and having him follow me everywhere in the house his first 3 months as a puppy. It has helped but still he is a wild zoomer. He is a very bright smart pup. Knows many tricks and picks it up fast. Recall is a whole other thing. Maddie and Emily our westies picked up recall within a very short time. I think Cairns are very strong willed. Always doing training with him. Time and patience are the key.
I'm still using a baby gate. Keeps Grady in one room so I can get house chores done otherwise he would be at my feet or barking out protests in a dart and zoom pecking fest at the vacuum. Such a little monkey.

It all sounds like my Cairn Mac, he was very smart and had a mind of his own.  I remember the trainer saying that he was the most stubborn dog that we had ever trained.  Mac would do what you asked him to do, like sit, stay, come, he would do it right one or two times, but you would ask him to do it again, he would just like at you with that cairn look,, "like I did it once and I will not do it again, move on"

my three westies were much easier to train.

got to love them

I didn't think my 2 were too bad until I got them in the bath and then on the grooming table today talk about bossy and determined to do what they want. Took me ages to brush/comb Izzy's face little tyke, Matilda wasn't a lot better she kept wanting to get down. Even in the bath Izzy was yappy when I left the room even though Matilda was in the bath with her.
