Emmie's Little Friend Had a Seizure Vote for this post

Emmie has a little Shih Tzu friend named Bella who is a month younger than her.. She's the cutest little pup and Emmie adores her! Bella's Mama called the other night crying and said that Bella had a seizure and it was one of the worst things she'd ever witnessed. She called the vet right away but the vet doesn't want to put her on meds unless she has another one. Anyone out there have any advice for Judy (Bella's Mama)? I have no knowledge of seizures and didn't know where to tell her to look for info. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Love, Deb, Emmie, and Angel Kelsie

Hello Deb,I am so sorry little Bella has started with seizures...Eric had his first one at 15 yrs ..3 weeks after we lost Dear Little Gremmie...my vet said it would be brain tumour to have started to happen that age in his life..he was healthy otherwise but my vet said in epilepsy it starts in young dogs...it is very upsetting to witness  when they have seizures but Ellie also had one later in life before we lost her  but as you know we had other health issues  sadly going on...I always just had to let the seizure take place and stay calm and not interferetrying to touch some dogs they can become aggressive  ..soon,even less than a minute he would come round but often groggy wobbly and disorientated and eye twitching.. but then back to normal again...Eric was on meds to stem the tumours growth...besides all this I know dogs that have epilepsy /fits it can be treated with medication to slow or not sure if to stop them having them...please let us know  how Bella is and  maybe she may not have another one...I hope Bellas vet can explain all about them to her mum..please tell her I am thinking of her and Positive that they will be able to get them under control for Bella....Big Hugs Annie and Smoochies to Emmie from her Drew and kisses from Bestest friend Biba. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi :)
My neighbors dog has had seizures on and off for years. We go to the same vet and our vet said that they wouldn’t do meds unless the seizures happened more frequently. Do you know if the pup has had a rabies shot lately? Tgat. Can be a side effect.

I'll be sure and ask about the rabies shot. Thankfully, there have been no more seizures since that first one. Praying it stays that way! Thanks for the info.

Oh Deb...I had a dog who suffered from seizures and it can be extremely upsetting when it happens as you are helpless.  My vet did say that if they were regular, he would suggest medication but once started they would be for a lifetime.  Mind you, this was a long time ago...perhaps 25 years and with modern medication it might be totally different these days.  I'm sure the vet will give her advice on what they would recommend for Emmie best friend Bella.  I think this is difficult for the owner as one doesn't understand what is happening that first time.  Hopefully this was an one time shot....  Keeping little Bella in my thoughts and prayers.

Deb, Minnie had seizures but they weren't the type that caused her to fall down. Hers were like she had Vertigo or disoriented.  She walked crooked and we just left her alone the first time it happened.  She came out of it about 30 minutes or so, we took her outside, she went to the bathroom, came back in and acted like nothing happened. This was around 2 in the morning. She woke up the next day just fine. I took her to the vet and he said because of her age, this kind of thing isn't that unusual.  So he put her on Dynalode. Veteranarians in Omaha came up with this and it's a chewable tablet that Minnie had to have every day. She did so well on this product. She did have other seizures, but it became fewer and fewer, with longer time in between seizures. Then she didn't have anymore.  I think it takes a while to build up in their system. I told a friend about it and she now has her 2 westies and scottie on it, and have been for a few years now.  The link to this product is below and I hope it can help in anyway.  Hugs to you, Emmie, your friend and Bella!

Roo started having seizures when he was 16. The first one happened in Sept. of his last year. Then he didn't have another for a few weeks but after a while they started happening with more frequency. I always suspected a fast-growing brain tumor.

Hope she doesn't have another one. Can't say I recall we ever had a dog have a seizure.
