What to feed Westie puppies? Vote for this post

Hi friends!
Hope everyone is healthy and doing well!  If all goes as we hope, we will be bringing home 2 Westie babies around the end of the month!  FINGERS CROSSED!

The breeder is currently feeding them Royal Canin Puppy Small size dog.  When I look into the best foods for Westies, the ingredients in this food don't seem to be high on the list.  I do see that there is a Royal Canin Westie food, but that's not puppy food.  She also adds a little bit of Purina Pro Plan puppy wet food.

I know there's lots of discussion about the grain-free foods - both pros and cons.  We fed Waldorf and Statler Blue Buffalo Wilderness for many years (and they were healthy on it), and only later in their lives switched over to a Blue Buffalo that wasn't grain-free after a vet told us to take them off the grain-free.

So friends, what do YOU feed your Westie babies, and in particular your puppies?  And how much?  She has said to feed them 3x a day.  We won't see the vet most likely until a couple of weeks after we get them, so will definitely be asking then but in the mean time - what to do?     Soooooo much confusing info out there - figured I'm best coming to the experienced experts here!  LOL   Thanx in advance!

Wow 2 congratulations they will keep you on your toes. In my experience the breeder has always given a typed list of the food she is currently feeding the pups. I pretty much stuck with what she fed them for quite a while. Matilda has tummy issues so for the moment is eating chicken, rice, pumpkin, beans (this could change after our dermatology appointment) Izabella eats a single protein roll of Salmon recommended by the vet along with steamed green veggies. Over the years I've tried grain free dried food (my girls don't eat dried food any more), raw feeding (not a success with these 2), home cooking. Good luck exciting times ahead.

Two times the Congrats to your family!! Two litter mates that will be bonded for life and what a joy they will be and keep you plenty busy. Keeping fingers crossed they'll be with you soon!!
It is your choice on what to feed and breeders are very good at helping with alternative brands. I think puppies can stay on the puppy food the breeder suggests for the first 6 months which gives you plenty of time to do research on what to feed your two darlings. With Grady my 3 year old Cairn I kept him on the dry puppy kibble for 6 months before switching him off of it. Giving him 1/4 to 1/2 cup over that time.
Details please....two boys or two girls or one of each?? Do you have names picked out? I hope you will post some pictures of the homecoming for us here. Excited for you and  envious of holding those sweet little puppies and getting puppy breath kisses. Congratulations again!!

Hugs Sandra & Grady

Oh my, congratulations! I can smell the puppy breath if I close my eyes! Like Annie, it's been a long time since we had a puppy and I've always relied on the advice of the breeder and our vet. Others here also have good advice for you. Can't wait to see pics of the new arrivals when they get there!
Love, Deb, Emmie, and Angel Kelsie

THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOO MUCH, everyone!  Really appreciate all the love and support!  It's been since 2006 since we had puppies in the house so it's going to be a huge adjustment for everyone, particularly when it comes to interrupted sleep!  LOL  - but one we're definitely looking forward to!    Not sure that doing this during the winter, with the snow and temps we've been having, is the best timing, but hey Mother Nature presented herself now, so we're following her lead!

We are getting two males - which were the same as Waldorf and Statler, so we're comfortable and familiar with that.  The two little females were sooooo whiny for attention when we met them on Wednesday, while the males were just content to sniff around, be cuddled, give kisses, etc.  The mom is VERY sweet - very gentle, very laid back, very calm - hopefully the pups have some of her personality!  They will be vet-checked on the 25th of January with first shots, etc., and as long as they are healthy, weather-permitting we'll bring them home on the 30th.  They will be 8 weeks old that day.

It's exciting preparing for them - getting the crates out again, buying puppy chews and puppy toys, etc.  We've got a couple of names in mind but will wait to share until we're sure.  I'll keep you all posted, and will definitely share pics once our babies are home.  (if I can figure out how to upload pics here!  LOL)  I don't want to jinx anything right now!

BTW, I know when I posted last I was asking about getting Cairn puppies.  We decided not to go with them for a couple of reasons.  The first and most impactful was that it was still too soon after Statler passed - the reality was that I just wanted Statler back and was still overwhelmed with grief.  I also REALLY wanted Westies again, so when I received an email telling me that a litter of Westies had been born and was I still interested, we made the decision to pass on the Cairns and go with the Westies  We're all happy with our decisions.  We thought we were only getting one Westie, but there was still one unspoken for, and she was willing to negotiate a bit, so 2 babies will be coming home!

Thanx again for all your support!
