Allergies?
What's wrong with this Westie? He keeps licking his hair off. I know Westies are known for allergies but whats this dog's problem? His skin is blackened instead of pink.
I don't see a way to post a picture.

Re: Allergies?
Do you use Facebook I find it's the easiest way for me to upload a photo from there to here. Chronic licking I've found causes the skin to become black over time. Has he been examined by the vet and checked for yeast and or bacteria? Is it his paws?

Re: Allergies?
Yes he's been to the vet The vet doesn't really know what's wrong with him for sure but it's all of his legs and his belly. He just licks and licks and licks.

Re: Allergies?
Find another vet now, check the internet these problems are very common in westies our sissy had allergy problems not as bad as what you are describing but we managed to control it with OTC allergy pils and 2x a week medicated baths. Find another vet that has experiance with allergies sounds like dog needs help soon.John

Re: Allergies?
I agree with John time for a new vet. I used to take Matilda, Kelsi and Hannah to the dermatologist as the vet wasn't a lot of help. Too many antibiotics and they become resistant and then there's no stopping the infection.

Re: Allergies?
You need to break the licking cycle easier said than done of course. He would be very itchy and irritated. Matilda use to wear a plastic cone quite a bit to stop her from licking. We tried other types but she was an incessant licker. Our vet does what is called cytology she takes samples from the areas using sticky tape and puts them on glass slides and looks at them under the microscope as you really need to know whether it is a yeast infection or a bacterial infection as both require a different drug to kill the infection. Good luck. Izzy has a cytopoint injection every 8 weeks she is an environmental allergy Westie and fortunately it works well for her as the dermatologist couldn't work out exactly what in the environment is triggering her allergies.

Re: Allergies?
Our vet sold us a product called DouxoS3, it's a foam in a dispenser can that you rub all over the places where the hair is coming off and the skin is black and it took care of the problem, his hair is growing back and he looks much better.
But he still has a problem with his left hind foot. The vet says it's a tumor, it's a growth right on the end of his foot where the toenails are (which are gone)and it won't heal. He keeps licking it and we can't keep him away from it so it could heal but even if it did it's still a tumor or something like that and the vet hasn't offered any help except $1,000 surgery. I feel sorry for him but I don't know what I can do.

Re: Allergies?
Well unfortunately we had to put Morty down today, the vet said there just wasn't anything they could do for him at this point. He will be missed.
