And Another Thing....

Don't know how impressed the vet will be but I emailed their website address this evening cos' I noticed in his list of medications she'll be getting is RIMADYL. I've requested that they please try and find an alternative as I don't want her on that stuff....

Lynda, stick to it..I talked to my vet when Daisy was injured and he said they had a very good alternative, But I don't remember the name, because Asprin did the trick for Daisy.

It gets prescribed for arthritis, but Sparky had something called Metacam for that before that worked wonders...not really sure what he's got it listed for in this instance.

Now I know I am older and miss things and forget things.
But.... what should I know about Rymadil that I don't know.
Hamish used to take it!
Is it bad??
Thanks

According to things I've read here it is.
It's new over here in the UK but all vets are pushing it.
I know ONE dog, a Westie that was put on it and he started fitting and was very sick...

Hi Felicity , Re Rymadil, Do you have a search engine i.e. Google- Yahoo- etc.
If there is anything I want to know I always use these, Hundreds of articles on subjects, so heres one link first, there's loads more
Hope you are not offended and that I do not appear to be teaching you to suck eggs!
Jack.

Not at all Jack.
Once again the TC has come to the rescue.
I had my old Hamish ( he passed in 1998) on it as he had both knees operated on for cruciad ligament tears.
I never knew about this problem.
I now wonder if it caused him the neurological problems he had.
I will look up about it when I have more time tomorrow.
Actually, my favorite search engine is
www.ixquick.com
Suggested to me by a cyber friend in Alberta, Canada.
This westie network is really great.
Try the ixquick. It really is great.
Was just using it to send Lynda some stuff on places in Connecticut for her friends!!
Thanks again, and hugs and pats to that pretty westie girl.

Felicity

Hi - in answer to the question about Rimadyl - it is terrible stuff! In fact, they NOW (only because of law suits) recommend that vets do liver function studies and warn the "parents" about liver damage but I know that most vets still do not do this.

I had a dog on this for a back spasm (did a twist while trying to get a cat off the fence). He was in terrible pain and this did help the pain but within a couple of weeks, he got so weak, he could not walk ten feet without having to stop. Back to vet, they did blood tests and determined that he had autoimmune hemolytic disease, a side affect of the Rimadyl. His red cells were basically trying to destroy one another and his hematocrit was only 7% (instead of the normal 34% to 40%). He did recover (after $3000 in vet bills and lots of praying) but many dogs do not.

I joined a class action lawsuit several years back which is just now coming to fruition. There are web sites, which I used to have bookmarked but do not anymore, that tell all the side effects of this medication. One was through about.com and the other was seniordogs.com (I believe).

I personally would never allow any of my dogs to ever have this drug no matter what! Aspirin basically does the same thing without the side effects.

Hope I have not scared you half to death but if your dog has been on Rimadyl and has never had liver function tests, it would not be a bad idea to have this done. Along with the AIHH that Gismo had, he did have liver damage from the drug and this was watched carefully throughout the rest of his life.

Lynda I'm sorry I didn't even know Sparky had a lump. I just read your other post. Where is the lump located? I'm assuming it is just a beign lump.

Be sure and make sure the vet is good and covers up the lump cut very well before he cleans the teeth. I know the mouth area can contain alot of bacteria.

I wish you and Sparky the best.

Re: And Another Thing.... Reply to this Message

She's had it around 18 months. It's not "attached" so not a problem but the previous vet said not to let it get bigger as it's where our shin fronts are on her back leg, and he said if it got bigger there would not be enough skin to cover after removal.
I was convinced it had grown and the groomer thought so this time too. But this vet isn't concerned about skin cover but where it's positioned as he said it's right on the hock joint, a very odd place, and that it will keep opening when she moves her leg !!!

Ok, now I know. You don't have to answer me in the post below about the lump.
That was very nice of your friend to offer to pay for this surgery. Glad you could stay friends after your time together.

My Rottweiler was on it when he was diagnosed with Bone Cancer and it really helped him with the pain. He needed it so he got it, simple as that. But in Sparky's case surely there's an alternative that will help.

Stick to your guns, Lynda. It sounds as though there are sensible alternatives.

Re: And Another Thing.... Reply to this Message

Put Rimadyl in your search engine and you will find some horror stories. Kali got sicker while on it and I did that. I took her right off of it. Our vet said they had not heard of these side effects. Well, needless to say I will never use it again especially on an older dog.......
