Kidney problems

What are some of the first signs of kidney failure in dogs? Elliot's blood work showed some kind of elevated level in his kidneys. It was just barely over the limit so the Vet wasn't too worried since he doesn't have problems related to his kidneys. I asked what a higher level would mean and the Vet said genetic kidney failure. So...... Now I'm wondering if I should be looking for signs of kidney failure incase he does have future problems.

Kay, try not to worry too much about this, the next test might just show normal.
Our Old Schnauzer had Cronic Kidney disease, She had bouts off and on with it over the years, but lived a fairly normal life for 14 years.
Maybe the tests will get to the bottom of Elliot's problems, We hope so because he is a sweetheart.

my older dog myrt, a terrier mix is in early renal failure. last summer she starting having to empty her bladder very often, excessive thirst and she had a bladder infection. she is doing fairly well now, she has an occasional accident in the house where she never did before and still drinks a little more, but on the whole she does ok, just slowing down a lot but she is 17.

I just read some stuff regarding pancreatitis that Sheils directed me to and it says sometimes the kidney function test will show slightly elevated. Bet it's all related to his other problem. I'm not going to worry about it unless further testing shows it's higher.
