Heartworm Treatment
Does anyone have any tips or advice for having a dog undergo heartworm treatment? A friend of mine recently adopted an Australian Shepherd through a rescue group. The dog tested positive for heartworms. He is young (about 1.5 years) and otherwise healthy, but must undergo the treatment. Other than trying to keep him very quiet, does anyone else have any tips on getting through this?

Re: Heartworm Treatment
Hi Sherrie, its a little late, but if you do check back, here's what we say. If you don't treat him, he will die from the hw'S, SOoner or later. The big problem with treatment, is its and arsenical, and the dose needed to kill HW's is only a little tine bit less than the amount that kills dogs. Also, it is very caustic, so any drop that leaks out of a vein will cause a big chemical burn and slough. Still, he needs to get rid of the HW's in order to live long and prosper. Prevention is much better.
