I have a question. Molly will be 6 months old on 4th June and me and her Daddy are seriously considering having her Spayed. Various reasons include: Apparently best for her, less risk of illness when she is older, and we don't want to breed her. Can anyone help with advise .... pro's and cons etc ?
Thanks x

Lindsey
Well, you said it all. The best thing for her is to have her spayed.
I am pro-spaying. Katie will be 3 in August, and the thing that they get fat, well she isn't. I think if they eat too much junk, they will get fat.
Good luck

Lindsay - If you are not planning to breed Molly, spaying is the best thing you can do for her for all the reasons you stated. And, Leslie is right- spaying does not make them fat.. eating too much does!
I had Emma spayed at 7 months. It is best to do it before her first heat.

I say go for it. As she's almost in season I'd wait. The vets over here wait 9 weeks after their seasons just in case they are pregnant...

We say do it ASAP, before the first heat. I had both Daisy and Sissy done before they were six months. If you have it done before the hormones kick in everything is still undeveloped and smaller thus easier to remove. smaller incision and that. My Girlies had two stiches, they got over it very quickly.

Bella will be spayed next Friday, the 30th. She will be 5 months 3 weeks then. Her vet recommended doing it before her first heat as there is a lesser chance of cancers in the future if done before their heat starts. Also, we are hoping that it will help with her vaginitis.

Re: Advise Reply to this Message

Hi Lindsey, I decided to spay Xana even before she came to live with me. She's still 14 weeks and will be spayed when she gets 6 months. Several reasons:
1- When she gets older, she will probably have breast cancer, uterus cancer, ovary cancer... a hight percent of females!! Besides vaginal infections.
2- You will not have all the heat problems (psicological pregnancies, her period, maybe more nervous and agressive, lots of males running and barking right behind her, and the risk of getting pregnant).
Let us know what your decision is.

Rosie will be 5 months in 2 days, and I made an appointment to have her spayed on June 12th. She will be 5 months and 3 weeks. Her vet says the earlier the better, and best to do it before they go into heat for the first time.

There are many benefits, health wise to spaying them, so that is why I am doing it.

Re: Advise Reply to this Message

I think in the UK the Vet. advice is to wait till 9/12 weeks after the first season. Something to do with immature vaginas which is linked to incontinence. With all of the advantages it brings, remember, it is fairly major surgery. Jan
