HELP FOR MAISIE PLEASE ??

Maisie has had a skin problem for a few years- about 9 months or so ago she had a anti- allergen test programme - and has been on monthly shots since-- and it has virtually
cleared the problem- until this last few days-- her shot was due-- she has had it this morning -- and Im praying that as soon it kicks in it will help her, she has developed over the few day some itchy hot spots-- with little crusty patches and I have some Fucidern ointment the vet gave me but it doesnt seem to be working very well
Is there any body here that has got any tips on how to help give her some short term relief till ( please God)the shots start working-- she is going crazy with itching here and is licking and scratching, and continually coming to me so I can help scratch them for her -- poor little soul she is so distressd, I know that Lynda uses Primrose oil but that will take a while too kick in, any body got any other suggestions for a quick relief idea
I would be willing to try anything
Thanking you in anticipation
Jack

Jack

Poor Maisie. I know what you are going through. Kinsey has the same problem. This time every year she starts scratching and itching and pulling hair out. It so sad to watch. She too has to get a shot, unfortunatly it's a steroid shot. We then have to keep her on a very low dose of steroids for about a month. After..oh..I'd say, mid-September, she is fine again.
I look forward to the responses on this one, someone may suggest something that will help all of our furbabies having this problem.

Sorry I couldn't be more help, just know that we feel what you are going through and that we are here to lend a hand or ear.

Jack, BeeGee had hot spots after we got her and until we got her diet set and the beneficial oils started. I used Bag Balm on them, Not only did it provide relief it helped heal them very quickly. A bath in a good anti itch shampoo will work short term. I don't think your vet will use sterroids as she is getting the allergy shots, but it would provide very quick short tern releif.
Good luck, It's a very hard problem to deal with.

Re: HELP FOR MAISIE PLEASE ?? Reply to this Message

25 mg of benedryl should help some. Betty can tell you how often to give it. About a week ago Elliot had a little crusty spot around the edge of his ear canal so I put some cortacosteriod cream on it and it was gone in two days. He quit scratching it immediately. What I have is a prescription for me but over the counter hydrocortazone should do the same thing. Also, a bath with water the same temperature as Maisie's body temp in an oatmeal shampoo or better yet, just put some baking soda (1/2 cup in the sink should do) in the water and make sure her skin gets soaked.

Sorry Maisie is so miserable right now. Hope the shot kicks in soon.

Re: HELP FOR MAISIE PLEASE ?? Reply to this Message

I would say ditto to the cortizone cream, and maybe you could make a paste of oatmeal and put it on, or just a good soak in cool water with oatmeal in the water.
Make a little cheese cloth bag, and while you fill the tub, let the water from the tap, run through the little bag of oatmeal.
Poor little girl.
My Duglad had horrible skin problems, and it was a chore to deal with.
You could also get an elizabethan collar to help keep her from getting to that spot, and help her to rest while she has a cool compress or something.
I also have been giving Annie a half a benadryl every day.
I stopped for a while and she started itching like mad, and so now I have her back on the benadryl and she is much calmer.
I also do primrose oil, and 3V capsules from the vet which are mostly just fish oils and vit. E. They sell the 3V caps on the Drs Foster and Smith web page, so you could look up what is in them as far as beneficial oils.

Good luck, and hope she will feel better soon.
Hugs....

Another thought. People say Ocean Salt Water is good for healing up skin problems. Elliot had a place between the toes on one hind paw that was still a little itchy from the past Fall/Winter mold spore allergy early this Summer. After he went into the Ocean, it cleared up completely. Do you have an Ocean nearby (LOL)she can go for a swim in? If so, you have to give her a bath afterwards to get the salt off.

Re: HELP FOR MAISIE PLEASE ?? Reply to this Message

I'm thinking (1) lukewarm oatmeal bath, (2) benadryl and/or (3) Gold Bond Powder.

Poor dear -- it's awful when they ask for help and we don't know what to do.

Re: HELP FOR MAISIE PLEASE ?? Reply to this Message

you have received excellent and varied advise. i am sure you can;t try them all at once but try what you think will work best in conjunction with the vet treatment so they do not conflict with each other

1. benadryl tablets
2. oatmeal baths
3. tea tree oil topical
4. hydrocortizone cream to the spots
5. oil of evening primrose perles longer term
6. omega 3 oils perles longer term
7. adjust her diet - very allergy dependent - sometimes feeding raw or eliminating ALL grains helps
8. make sure she is not exposed to fleas or other insects or grass

we wish you the best

Re: HELP FOR MAISIE PLEASE ?? Reply to this Message

For a quick fix try Savlon Cream, Jack. Or I bought an anti-itch spray many moons ago from the local petstore that smells "minty" but that did the trick too.
Also keep her skin cool where it itches even if it means continually patting her down with a damp flannel. It will greatly ease the itching.

Re: HELP FOR MAISIE PLEASE ?? Reply to this Message

This will work for sure, we used it on Ceilidh who had itchies for 18 months and lost her coat. Use it for hot spots, or any inflammation, dirty ears. t is the miracle cure and all natural.
60 % witchhazel
40 % aloe vera juice or gel
few drops of titri oil

You can even use it on yourself for dry skin, a little pricey but it makes a lot and lasts for ever in a dark corner. I recommend it for any one who has skin problems in their pets.

All of the above sounds like excellent advice. I do hope Maisie feels better soon. Skin problems are seldom easy to deal with...what works for one may not for another. Good luck and gentle hugs to maisie.

Re: HELP FOR MAISIE PLEASE ?? Reply to this Message

Jack sorry to hear about Maisie. My female, Jamie used to get that so bad she would howl in agony while rubbing up against the bricks. One of my neighbors brought by a bottle of Horse & Mane conditioner. She said to rub a little on her bad spots and it would help. Believe me after every home remedy and cortisone shots and pills, this was one thing that actually worked. See if you can find that at your drugstore. It would be in the hair conditioner isle. Hope she is feeling better soon.

Re: HELP FOR MAISIE PLEASE ?? Reply to this Message

Jack, my baby has had the same condition for the last few years. But this year, she didn't have it at all, knock on wood. Although this won't cure the problem now, it will give you, and Maisie, something to look forward to.

As for treatment, we were lucky enough to have the cream and steroid shot work but the doctor also suggested not only the medicated shampoo but Keri lotion to keep her skin moist, due to all the excessive shampoo. I've yet to try this because she got better but might be worth asking about.

My thoughts are with you, I know how horrible it is to watch. Nana started yelping in pain at one point and I seriously was worried she was going to chew her tail off.
