Mars Coat King Reply to this Message

Mars Coat King

I posted a question about the Mars Coat King under a thread quite far down the list - I thought I would bring it to the top.
I have 2 Cairns (not members- yet!)
I have been handstripping, but it's getting difficult due to arthritis in my hands.
Will the Mars tool leave them still looking a bit shaggy?
I like the shaggy look, but since all I have been able to do lately is brush them, they are beyond shaggy!!
Thanks for any info anyone can share!

Yes, the Mars Coat King leaves them looking like cairns.. it both strips and trims... and is very easy to use.. you pull it thru the hair like a rake.

Write Danielle at Ggreyfriar @ aol.com and she can tell you plenty.

they are available at a good price at the cairn mall grooming store.

Corinne,
I have just ordered the Mars Coat King, scissors and strippers from the Cairn mall- My current scissors are almost worthless and the one stripper I had is missing!
That should make it easier on my hands!
As soon as I get them "neatened", I'll try to get pic's (if I can slow them down long enough)and join them up!

Corinne,
Thank you! I have seen it at the cairn mall store- I just wasn't sure how "stripped" they would look. It sounds like it will do the trick!
I will probably order it tomorrow- it's late and I'm getting a bit "foggy"!
I love the cairn mall store! I have the Ann Priddy egg, the first 2 Roger Kibbee mugs, 2 of Bonnie's belly bands (I have a major marker- I tell him it's a good thing he's cute!), and I've ordered the cookbook! I'm sure there will be more!
Thanks for all you do for rescue!

Thanks- I've been "lurking" for a while- I just can't seem to get any good pictures of my 2 characters-They just start zooming as soon as I get the camera out!
I will just have to go with big bribes once I have them neatened up to get some recognizable shots!
They will be members soon!

One of the best things about the coat king is that dogs that hate stripping (my Dunc)will sit there quietly for the raking.. its like combing.. he loves it

The Minkies' groomer agrees....it's so less time-consuming than stripping that she now will not strip dogs. She either does them with that or not at all.

Corinne,
I received my order, including the Mars Coat King, from the Cairn Mall today- You guys are FAST!
I plan to start "neatening" tomorrow- they should be okay with it- they hate being brushed, but will actually sit and let me hand- strip for quite a while- my hands just can't take it any more!
I actually ran it over them very briefly and they didn't seem to mind it at all.
It's just hard to get them to stay still long enough to finish- but any one with a terrier knows all about that!

Wow! It really strips!!!
I got a bit carried away I think- Poor pups are nearly naked!!!
Actually, it's not bad- they had gotten so shaggy and this is such a change- I still have a bit to do, but the hubby was at work when I did this and I need a bit of help holding them while I do a bit more on the legs, tails and "hineys".
It's not a professional job, but not too bad for my first effort with the "Coat King"!
They really didn't mind it until I got to the more sensitive areas, but then they didn't mind when I handstripped them either!

Re: Mars Coat King Reply to this Message

Bonnie, I'm so glad you like this. BELIEVE me, it works super and every time you use this you get better and better at it (however great results are even seen the first time). After 20 years of breeding and showing cairns, fostering and grooming/boarding cairns, I sound like I own stock in Mar's Coat King. I have drawers of junk here that I have paid so much for and I thought that that item would be the beat all to end all, and it wasn't. Even a special made grooming tood (made in Sweeden 15 years ago to my hand shape and this sucker cost me $100.00 . . . and I HAVE never been able to use this). I finally boxed up the zillions of dollars woth of stuff and gave it to my local shelter and foster homes.

You'll all find secrets with the Mar's, based on the amount of coat your dog has and the appearance you want you dog to have. The great thing here is that there is no ruining your dogs coat, you just can't do this with the Mar's, meaning big bald choppy blotches. The more you rake the kids the more coat comes out (to a point, and this point is still very short of a total strip), and then you need to do is just rake until you are happy with the amount of coat you get out.

When you use the Mar's, DON'T brush your kids out first (quite the opposite of what you usually do when you groom . . . we are all so used to combing and brushing them first). Also, if you want to remove more coat and the Mar's is going through the coats really easy, run your hangs from the tail up to the neck through the coat, and scruff up the coat OR Mar's sideways from the spine to the undertummy.

Re: Mars Coat King Reply to this Message

Danielle,
Thanks for all the information!
You are right- it does stop short of a total strip-
I did brush first-I guess it's automatic. It's good to know that I don't have to- they hate the brushing, so they will be happy to skip that step.
As I said, it's obviously not a professional job, but I'm sure I'll get better.
I love the fact that the furkids don't seem to mind it!

I have to say that I was just given the MARS COAT Rake from my dog groomer for my HORSES. If any of you have horses out there, the large rake is so great for pulling a horse mane to perfection. I would like to try it on the dogs too, but was told to go to the barn for this and leave the girls to the real groomer! I said okay.
