Groomer boo-boo's

I think I just need to vent! My groomer, who grooms my two Westies as well as my Yorkies, has lately been cutting/nicking them. She is a very nice woman who works out of her home, but the last two times she's groomed my Yorkies, there were accidents. Last time, she cut (although not severely) my 14 year old Katie, who is a fairly calm girl. Yesterday, while grooming Phoebe, my 7 year old Yorkie-Poo (who does squirm, I'll give her that), not only was she cut, but it was deep enough that it required stitches at the vets. I'm thinking of grooming them myself, because how much worse could I possibly do? Anyway, just wondering if anyone had similar experiences. It's frustrating because I know my Westies are difficult to groom, so we've been all over town to different groomers. Thought we had found a good one, and now this!

Sherrie,

That is just awful! Since Max is only 6 months old, he's only been groomed once. As daunting as the task of grooming Max myself would be, I guess I'd give it a try if I couldn't have someone else do it safely and properly!

Have you talked to your groomer about it? Let us know what you decide!

My goodness Sherrie!!!

I changed groomers when Skyler came home w/ a little "burn" on his chin - I think he was lying near the dryer, and fell asleep on something hot.!!!

I would certainly tell the groomer that she should pay for the vet bill - for the sutures and removal of same. I think she would certainly then get the message about why you will NOT be returning!!!!

That is totally unacceptable!!

That is terrible. I am the extreme nit-picker, and my motto is Trust NO ONE, so I groom my babies myself. It has become my hobby, and it can be a bonding experience. Of course, my only children have fur or feathers, so my time is possibly freer than yours, but still - maybe your groomer needs new glasses, but your babies should not be tortured to save her feelings!

Clumsy cow !!! I'd do it myself BUT I used to do the Minkies and one day I cut Sparky...I felt awful and now pay for them to be done.
There's no way a professional groomer should cut them.

saying that a groomer should NEVER cut a dog, is like saying that you will NEVER make a mistake in your profession. it's unrealistic to think that way. cutting a dog once in a while is not okay, but it's just an accident. when it happens a lot is when you need to find a new groomer.

I agree...accidents DO happen. People are human. However, two times in a row is a LOT.

The first time I might chalk up to being an accident. But when it happens again something has to be done. Did she admit to cutting your dog? She should be paying the vet bill and she should have offered. There is no excuse for cutting an animal period!!

Elliot has had 2 different groomers and both say he's a wiggle worm. He's come home with a few uneven spots but that's understandable considering his dodging the clippers and such but he's never been nicked. I suggest mailing her the Vet bill and find another Groomer. Who knows, maybe she'll pay it. Sorry this happened especially twice.

Re: Groomer boo-boo's Reply to this Message

She is a very sweet woman, and was crying hysterically when she phoned my husband to tell him she'd cut Phoebe. At first she offered to pay the vet bills, as she felt sure Phoebe would need stitches. Then, she decided to not charge us for both of the Yorkie's haircuts. I'd have made out better if she'd have paid my vet bill, because my vet bill, to date, was a good bit more than if I'd paid for two haircuts. It's not about the money, but just the same. I know she feels badly about it, but I can't see how it could happen twice. Needless to say, they won't be going back!

Re: Groomer boo-boo's Reply to this Message

Sherrie,
how awful.
I found a good groomer on my third try. I just love her, she is so good with both kelsey and Furby.

The only problem now is I moved and now have to find another groomer or hope I can get saturday appts.

When I had my late westie in western new york, I was on my third groomer, finally found a good one and then moved to North Carolina.
Oh well, hope it all works out for you, there are bad groomers out there even when we think we found a good one.
The other thing I liked about my groomer was she worked out of the vets office.
Thats what I'm looking for now.

I've been more satisfied w/ groomers who practice - no pun here-- in a vet's office. They have more experience by virtue of volume, plus there are additional staff and a vet health professional on site, if problems arise. I will never go back to an "independent" groomer.

Not to beat the tired old drum, but if you hand strip, dogs don't get cut or burned, and the skin is much healthier too!

I'd be looking for someone else or try grooming them yourself. Needing Stitches is a worry.

I groom my own.. and just do a bit at a time (last nite was 'ears').. keeps them looking better all the time..

you might also try one of those groomers at petsmart. We used one on my mom's bichon and they did a good job.

good luck. If it had been the first cut, maybe, but twice.. no, I'd be nervous too.

(you might also check out the 'Mars tool' just in case)

Yeah, Petsmart has recently begun training programs for in-house groomers. Their stores have the grooming department in the front, so thay you can watch them as they work w/ the dogs. For the most part, they seem quite caring and proficient.

That sounds like a nasty cut to need stiches and i feel that there is no way you should expect that from a profesional Groomer

I remembering going off on the groomer that just cut an inch of hair off my Tasha's ear's saying I thought it needed triming, so I would hate to think what I would have done if this had happened.
(for those that don't know her, the hair from her ears was long and grew down below her chin)

Re: Groomer boo-boo's Reply to this Message

Oh, poor babies. i wouldn't go back, either.

I started grooming Reggie and Roo last spring and I agree it can be a great bonding experience. They are still not happy about having their nails done, but they are beginning to realize it's gonna happen so they are settling down.

My motivation was mostly the cost. I tried two here in town. The first wasn't expensive but Reggie came back looking like a schnauzer! The second one is great but he charges about $40 per, so I decided to try it myself. I got Judy Young's grooming tape and I'm very happy with it!

Good luck!

Better to have uneven fur that mummy's cut than wounds that hurt and stitches we say.
love and kisses from us and hope all heals up quickly.

Re: Groomer boo-boo's Reply to this Message

OUCH! Can the groomer and go to local dog show in your area to talk to the "pros", they will help advise and direct you to someone that can help you. Do not waste your time and torture your dog anymore. You can perhaps do some of this work yourself. At the very least you have more patience with your own dog if the otherwise "paid novice" does not. You can do more harm than good if you do not get a better groomer. You owe this to your dog. Seek and you shall find!

Re: Groomer boo-boo's Reply to this Message

I am a groomer in training at petsmart. I have not cut a dog yet, but i know that sometime in my career it will happen. And it is almost always by accident because of a wiggly dog. There is NO need for name calling or anything! any other groomer i've worked with who has cut a dog has felt awful. The dogs i've groomed i loved and treated as my own. It's no different than if you accidently cut your own dog, you feel horrible. But it doesn't make you any less of a professional, shit happens! get over it!

Certainly there is no need for name calling and MOST DEFINATELY your poor taste in bad language here. Sounds like you would be better served (or at least the canines would) if you would interest yourself in another career far away from animals. You have demonstrated here that you do not have control. Sorry. I wish you would have mentioned which PetSmart you are "training" at.

I agree with Carole's last post. Whoever Hallie is, she is not exactly an endorsement for taking my girls to PetsMart....just the opposite.

I apologize. it wasn't my intent to offend anyone. So i got a little carried away with how i ended my reply. The "clumsy cow" comment just really got to me. I just wanted to make my point and i'm sorry if it seemed like i over did it. I love the animals i groom and i don't believe a little profanity makes me a bad groomer. Yes, i will choose better words next time. so don't worry you won't hear from me again. I just you can forgive me.

Re: Groomer boo-boo's Reply to this Message

I'm a professional groomer. I know that when a dog gets cut, it scary for the owner, the dog, and the groomer, and it should not happen very often. however, it does happen sometimes, everyone makes mistakes, and when a groomer does cut or nick a dog, they should absolutly pay for the vet bills. i would say to give your groomer another chance, but if it's happening a lot, then maybe she's getting burnt out and not being careful enough. i don't think hallie was trying to be mean or offend anyone, i think she was just trying to let everyone know that it does happen once in a while. just becasue we are professionals does not mean that we are perfect. i have cut dogs before, not a lot, but i feel terrible and i take total responsiblty for it. i also love the dogs i groom very much and would never want anything bad to happen to them. i understand why hallie might have been upset by some of the comments made, especially the 'clumsy cow' comment, that was uncalled for. you should be able to trust your groomer, you just have to be picky about who you choose and sometimes it takes a while before you find a good one.
