Grooming for Cairns?

I am a brand new Cairn mom ... Scamp is only 13 weeks old, but I have soooo much to learn, I figured I should start asking NOW! I see different posts about 'Stripping' or 'Cutting'. I have no idea what the difference is in the two and which is best! Any information would be greatly appreciated!!!

THANKS!

Good suggestion!!!

A groomer also told me about "carding" which she said is more like the hand-stripping process. Does anyone know anything about that or every heard of the term?

thanks.

Stripping tends to promote a harsh outer coat. I prefer it to clipping the coat, but it is very time consuming and you'll be lucky to find groomers willing to take the time to do it properly. Cutting tends to give you a softer coat. The choice you make all depends on whether or not you care if the coat is harsh or soft.

If you want to show him they demand the coat's stripped too. My girls have always been clipped. The Mars Coat King they sell at Colonel Potter's does the job like a strip would leaving a harsher coat.

Can you tell me what this is? I assume it is a special grooming tool. Thanks, Jeanie

hi all,I have just used the MAts Coat King on Angus and he came up a treat, his coat has got a nice shine on it now hwere as before there was no shine,I got the Mars coat King from Col Potters plus as set of shears to trim his feet, well worth the investment.

I also love the Mars Coat King....easy to use and definately better than "hand stripping"

Stripping is the way to go here in Holland. I've always been told that clipping isn't too good for their coats, don't know if that's true or not. Try to find a groomer willing to strip him or try doing it yourself. It's quite a job to do, with my Cairn it usually takes about 2 to 3 hours at the groomer.

Re: Grooming for Cairns? Reply to this Message

The Minkies' groomer refuses to do it anymore as it's so time-consuming and says the money just isn't good enough for it anymore.

Thanks for the info. Since Scamp is to be a pet / family member only .... I will go with what is simplest for us all.... cutting, and will use the same groomer I use for my poodle!

Thanks again!

I do not groom ED. I brush him about weekly and leave him alone. God gave him the coat he wears for a reason. Why mess with a good thing? (I'm also lazy, so that could account for my opinions.)
