Teeth Cleaning

How often does one need to have the pup's teeth cleaned? Harley is a major chewer and his teeth are perfectly clean all the time. Molly's back teeth look like they may need cleaning. I have tried brushing them and have tried to scrape them clean myself but it does not come off. Do I have to take her in to the vet for this or can I do something myself?

Thanks,
Pam

P.S. She and Harley are the same age 2 1/2 years old.

You might want to call the vet
and they might know what to do.

Here is a site that explains how to brush and how often. There is a Oral Solution that is suspose to help prevent plaque build up. I can't remember the name of it but it's 2 substances added together and you put drops on their gums weekly. You might ask your Vet about it.

Usually the vet knocks them out and does it. Molly's young to need it though. Both the Minkies have just had theirs done once each and both times was incidental-I had them done while they were out for something else.

Pam, Your vet should check them when he does their yearly exam. He should tell you then. Both BeeGee and Sissy have great clean teeth, Daisy at almost six years is starting to get some bulidup on her molars. The vet said that he might want to clean them next year, but I am determined he won't need to. I get pads saturated with cleaners that I use on them.

Pam - Emma is not a big chewer. I give her treated rawhide strips made by CET that really keep her teeth clean. Some pet stores have them as do many vets. They are not expensive.

I tried brushing her teeth and using pads but she hates it when anyone gets near her mouth.

Your vet will tell you when their teeth need cleaning.

Both Faith and Phoenix love having their teeth brushed.
If Phonix sees me brushing my teeth she will bark if I don't get her tooth brush and tooth paste ready for her.
Stormie is still not liking it, but at least she has stopped running away.

I've tried cleaning my Westies teeth but it hasn't worked out. Tried the gel, that didn't work. Tried bones and hard biscuits. I think I will have to just make an appointment and get Kelsi's teeth cleaned. She had it done early last year and was fine.

I am like Diana. I have tried a lot of stuff and it didn't work including that gel which is expensive by the way, but worth it if it had worked!! Your vet should tell you when her teeth need to be cleaned. Oh yea, they will definitely tell you LOL!!

We don't clean their teeth as ours have always had raw bones to chew on, my friends dog is 14 and never had her teeth cleaned and has beautiful teeth. We don't give rawhide or any other chewy thing. hugs and kisses

Beth.. CET is the company that makes the chew strips. They also make toothpaste. Some pet stores carry it as do some vets. If you want- I can send you some to see if the herbs like it. Just e-mail me.

Libby also love chewing on rawhide and all of her toys. I bought a dog teethbrushing kit. I've only used it once though. I only brush her teeth when I notice discoloring or spots, which is very rare.
