Mars Coat King

This is a re-post from Terrier Town.

Does anyone here use this grooming tool on thier terrier? I would love to have Murphy stripped but I cant find a groomer that does it. So I am going to try on my own. If anyone had any advice, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Diane - I use it on my Cairns and it works great and they love it. They sit very still while I am doing it as it feels so good to them. Get it from Col. Potter so that the money goes to rescue.

Thanks! (I was definately going to order from there)

Now I am a total beginner at it. Do you just brush them with it?

Diane, I think from others here that Colonel Potter's supply you with instructions or they're on their website.

You will be very skilled with the Mars in no time. Simply do not brush their fur first. I also will take my fingers and go against the growth of hair to get it to stand on end more.
The Mars brush is the best tool and limits the amount of hand stripping necessary.
The other suggestion is if you have a breeder near by, or kennel sometimes they hand strip terriers at a very reasonable price.
Go for it! You will be pleased

I use the Mars on Dexter and Fancy. A member here sent me a link to the company site, which had a slide show. Using this tool is very easy. I've seen a bit more coarse hair come in on Dexter's curly coat, but I should probably be taking more hair out than I do. The tool works better on Fancy who used to get stripped regularly.

Cheers,

I use it here on my dogs and the fosters.. its helped Duncan get harder hair in.. he was a real baby when it came to stripping..
Its a rake.. so you drag it lengthwise (compared to the handle) thru the hair rather than crosswise.. It will both pull AND cut hair.. so you need to clean the hair out after each draw to make it pull more than it cuts.

When I get a heavily matted foster in, I do remove the matts before Marsing.. its ok for small matts, but anything more than a few hairs and it can be uncomfortable for the dog. I DONT brush ahead of time.. but since I generally keep mine fairly well groomed its not a problem. I do mars often so they generally looked groomed (my guys are the ones on coins for cairns..so you can see I do keep them a bit shaggy... but groomed)

If you ask, Col Potters does have a document you can get with it to help you.. and Danielle is more than glad to give advice on it.

Usually you need thinning shears for the legs and rounded scissors to keep the feet neat.. but the mars will do great on most of the coat.
