Bathing

Hi everyone and thank you all for all the warm welcomes we've recieved!
I am wondering how often is ok to bath Andy? He is a fairly clean dog, however we are a very active family. We spend alot of time outdoors. I have also spent alot of money trying to find the "right" brush. What kind have you had success with?
Finally is it ok to just start giving him the Evening Primrose Oil? He hasn't been too itchy, but I have noticed it.
Thank you all in advance!!

Re: Bathing Reply to this Message

Welcome to you and Andy. I try not to bathe my boys unless they are just a total mess. I will wash their faces or wash their feet and I always wipe their bottoms when they poop. I also use Johnson's Baby Powder with cornstarch. I shake it on them then brush it out. I just use a regular brush but I know you will get some better ideas from others...

Re: Bathing Reply to this Message

My Girlies are country girls, They know how to get dirty. I bathe two of them once a month before I put their Frontline on. The other I bathe once a week because she has very oily skin. I would say not to bathe him unless he needs it.
Before and after bathing and grooming I use a slicker brush on the Girlies. Every day I just use a bristle brush and terrier comb.
You can just start the oil of Primrose, It will take a couple of weeks to notice any difference. 500mg a day is what most use. The Girlies get fish and flax oil instead.
Between baths they get their tummies and a few other things wiped with baby wipes.

I bathe Miss Daisy about once a month. Longer if I can. I never use hot water, I just make it so that it isn't cold. Hot water makes the skin dryer and itchier. I also use a mild puppy shampoo because she is sensative to most others and will itch. You will find what works best with trial and error. The brush I use is one of those pin brushes to massage the skin while I brush her, that encourages the skin to produce a little oil to the surface so they say.

Re: Bathing Reply to this Message

Now we are the odd balls here.
First off Welcome Melissa and Andy...we have had our 2 dogs for less then 2 yrs. and I can count on my hands how many baths each has had. Maybe 3 to 4 x a year is all! They do get brushed daily and occasionally get spritz with Listerine gold diluted in water and then massaged in and towel dried. Occasionally face wiped down and bum also. Feet get rinsed if needed...and esp. if one is chewing some.
But mercy, why bother if you don't really need to?
Since the hair is course, it sheds dirt and a good brushing will help get out what is in the hair. That has been my philosophy...
We use natural bristle brushes, one longer and one shorter bristle...use the short one to get out general tangles and the other for deep cleaning. Also a metal flea comb that we have had for eons....works very well.
That is it other than the striping knifes and Mars King Coat. Happy grooming!
Hugs,

Yes to the oil...it works wonders...the bathing shouldn't be until it's really neccessary.
The Minkies get one every 12 weeks when they're groomed unless they've rolled in poop !!

Re: Bathing Reply to this Message

Well, With our first Westie she got groomed about every 2 months and once in awhile I would give her a bath in between if she really needed it. But with Buffy (westie) I have had her groomed 4 times she is 16 months old and Missy (cairn) has been groomed 2 times she is 13 months old but we got her at 7 months and she had never had a bath. I do give them baths in between when they need them and they seem to get horribly dirty but they do spend alot of time outdoors. I try not to unless they are real bad. I try to just wipe them off on paws or face or Bum when needed. so far they really do not have skin problems as of yet.

Re: Bathing Reply to this Message

Duffy is our mud bug. He loves any kind of dirt. I try to bathe him no more that every 8 weeks, if that often. His allergies were definately worse when I bathed him more. Usually I just let the mud dry on him or rub him dry with a towel and then brush him and he looks great. I tried the Primrose oil a couple of months ago - he would lick it from a spoon (the boy will eat anything) but after about a week it seemed to make him nauseous. I started him on it again last week mixed with his dinner - no problem with the nausea this time. I have used several kinds of brushes on him and it really doesn't seem to make a big difference. I too use a flea comb on him about once a week. It helps to remove the dead hair, small mats and burrs he has picked up outside. He seems to like the way it feels and he looks just beautiful.

Hey, my vet told me that I should bathe Mister Beasley every week! Talk about high maintenance. I gave him a bath last week. It was ok, he did not mind. Seemed to be cool with it. And today I gave another one. Seems to sooth what itches him.
