Cairn Terrier Behavior

I have a two year old male Cairn Terrier. I am having trouble housebreaking him. I let him out and he goes outside (both things) and then I let him in. When he comes in he messes on the floor routinely. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help, Joanne

Tricky...they all vary...can you get a dogflap installed ? They're VERY handy...
And has he been neutered ? Some males are buggers for marking !! I'm sure others will give you more suggestions too.

He is neutered but we do not have a dogflap because the yard is not fenced in. Thanks for your help.

Have you tried crate training? It worked for both of my westies.

Yes, Bailey is in a crate when we are not at home and I am reluctant to let him roam around the house when I am home because he is not fully housebroken. I have tried just keeping him in the kitchen until he is fully trained, but we have made very little progress in that respect. Thanks for your input.

I never had a problem with my male cairn but then he could go out as he pleased,he never pooped indoors though,My Friend has Two labs both males and although Tommy always goes outside last thing at night he still poops most nights in house ,he is now 7 and still does it..she has had all sorts look and advise, her daughter is a vet they think it is a seperation thing as he is downstairs albeit with his pal charlie the other lab,he is fine and no messes!Hope you can work it out as I say I have been lucky to have enclosed outside areas where the cairns can always get.My Male cairn was never neutered and was very clean always apart from an odd marking in strangers houses which is natural. He was better as he got older though

Thanks Annie for your input. I feel his behavior is because I work and don't spend enough time with him and he is in the crate all day. I restict Bailey to the kitchen when I am home, but he sneaks out and will go on my carpet or on the bed - I think it is for attention. He is very bright and learns other things very easily. I will just have to be more patient and hope he outgrows this behavior.

Joanne it sounds like that is part of problem, and I have never crated mine, they do love activity and excersize so much and being only 2 yrs old also they are full of the love of life, also I think if he is confined to kitchen when he is in other rooms he is just territorial marking when he gets the chance,Like you say I hope you can be more patient and get to let him out more and spend more time with him I know mine would be so sad and depressed to be locked up,Do keep in touch.

It's quite sad that he's crated all day then confined in one room all evening. Not much fun for him, is it, really ? Do you regularly walk him when you get home or spend any time with him ??

I am a very good boy...UNTIL! I feel I'm not getting the attention I should, then I do something bad so my moma well notice me.....but not poopie stuff. I goes for the trash in the bathroom (lovely, mom says!heehee) or I likes to get in the dirty laundry basket and bring her...unmentionables!! This really gets her attention and we play tug or chase Jackie around the house (my personal very favorite game). We love to play and we need hugs, hugs, and more hugs!!! try these things and see if you notice a change.
