Need help getting my Westie to wear his new boots.
I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to how I can get Dakota to wear his new boots I got him? I see everyone else with their lil' doggies all dressed so cute and I thought I'd get him a few things, but he isn't thrilled about it. Most dogs appear to be so calm and happy in their duds. Do most dogs start out uncooperative, or do I just have a really hard to train lil' guy? ANY help, or suggestion would be greatly appreciated. I would really love to be able to dress him in cute things.
Thanks, Tracy

Robbie would bite my fingers off if I tried to put those boots on him!! He doesn't like his feet touched at the best of times! I'll be watching to see what advice you get.

If he really doesn't like them I'd let him be and stick to scarves instead.....poor little bugger !! They're sweet boots though. XXX.

Re: Need help getting my Westie to wear his new boots.
those are CUTE! Are they stiff? My girls have the mucklucks for the winter but to keep them wearing them they have to use them all year instead of just winter. Practice in the house. My girls are LESS THAN THRILLED being in them ever LOL! Practice and slowly build up the time. They love their bandanas coats etc, just NOT their boots hehehe. Buggers ;)

Re: Need help getting my Westie to wear his new boots.
Those are very cute! But they look alittle stiff and heavy. When starting out I got something lighter with a soft sole to get them used to having something on his feet. I only put them on for short periods of 10 minutes at first. Then work up in time.Hope this helps.

Re: Need help getting my Westie to wear his new boots.
Sorry everyone if I'm not posting right. This is my first time using a Message Board. Forgive me if I post in the wrong place. Do I use reply or add to topic?
Anyway, I saw the adorable boots on your lil' ones (from the link you posted) and I found some on eBay tonight and bought them for Dakota and Micah. I think they are Adorable and will work great! They look similar to the boy booties in your pic.

You are doing great! To answer a SPECIFIC post, use reply. To add general comment about the subject, use add to topic. Hope I've made myself clear! I've been up most of the night - think I'll go back to bed for a bit-just took the puppers out in the rain-they are ready to fall asleep again - they think they have to keep me company if I have a restless night!! Hubby has to work today, so I can sack out for a couple of hours!

Re: Need help getting my Westie to wear his new boots.
Yeah, they are a little stiff, They're called Hound Hikers. We get a lot of snow here so I thought they'd protect his lil' feet and look cute too, but I think you're right. I better start with something less stiff and clunky. I'll try some light weight booties first. If he hates them altogether, I won't force him to wear them. I guess the fact that I don't have children is making me want to baby him so much and buy all the cute stuff to dress him up. I'm just achin' to spoil him! I saw this suit for doggies and I just LOVE it!!! He'd be precious in it!

Re: Need help getting my Westie to wear his new boots.
Tracy, I never graduated Camy to actual booties but I had great success with heavy duty baby socks! They are soft, stay on well and don't have a sole to them. Also very easy to wash! She ripped them off a few times but they stay on better then her mucklucks (sp?). I'm sure something waterproof would be better but they do keep the ice balls off her feet as well as salt from the roads. Beth

baby oil or cooking oil
You can also put baby or cooking oil on their feet to prevent ice balls as well as ward off some of the salt. Some people prefer cooking oil because you know there is nothing in it to harm them if they lick it off. Just be sure to wipe their feet well when you come in, otherwise they may track some oil on to the furniture.
It gets frigid cold in the winter here and last year Mia just threw herself down and cried, so she got fleece booties. They only stayed on because the velcro was big enough to wrap the straps around her legs twice. She hates them though, but never did figure out how to get them off. Her sweaters on the other hand, she is a pro at getting those off.

Oh have you brought back memories. Now you have to picture this... I got boots for my Tasha because she liked to go for walks and it being winter with snow and Ice I put her boots on. Well dumb mom never thought about her needing her nails to go up the small hill that had ice on it. Poor Tasha tried two times to walk up this small hill, but each time her feet slipped under her, the second time she hit her chin on the ground. Well she laid there and took those boots off with her teeth and threw them to the side, then looked up at me and growled, I just couldn't help myself, watching her do this, then to growl, I laughed so hard I had frozen tears on my cheeks. Needless to say we turned back and went home, boots went in the closet never to be worn again. So good luck, just don't go out where's there's ice.
