Duncan is stripping herself! Vote for this post

Duncan is biting herself and removing fur! It has happened twice before but only briefly. The last time the vet gave Atarax and it made her sleepy, grouchy and sometimes just MEAN.

Duncans coat is long and thin. Sort of blousey.

She doesnt break skin, but struggles at bending all the way around to the top of her leg and pulling fur out!

I was up early this morning so I brushed her, used the Mars Coat King thoroughly and then bathed her with Warner Lambert Baking Soda and Oatmeal shampoo, then sprayed with hydrocortizone. I dont bath frequently - this is the forth time this year. Ive added to her food "Missing Link" for the Omega 3s.

Does anyone have any recommendation? I dont want to start on oral cortizone unless it is absolutely necessary.

Thanks Terri

I give the Minkies a capsule of Evening Primrose Oil with their evening meal. That does the trick for them, though it will take 2-3 weeks before you see a big difference.

Oh My. The only thing I know to do is antihistimines if it is allergy related. If she has fleas you have to keep those boogers off. I use benadryl 1/2 a tablet 2 times a day and it that doesn't work, try 1/2 a tablet 3 times a day. I also keep Gold Bond powder on hand and rub it in good to the skin. It helps with the immediate itching. Just keep it away from her eyes. I also use the "Relief" shampoo from my vet. It is also oatmeal based and it really seems to help. you can bathe once a week with that. Poor Duncan...

Hi Terri,
My Willie was doing this. Within a couple of days he had 2 bald spots.
Willie has allergies and had been going to a Dermatologist. The Skin Doctor took scrapings of the bare spots and it turned out to be STAPH PYODERMA! (I was worried it was Mange or Mites!) He has to be on an antibiotic for 25 days. He was also put on Tavist for his itching...the Benedryl just wasn't working.
Willie already has hair starting to grow.
If you have any questions you can e-mail me. If nothing else you may want to research STAPH PYODERMA. As far as I know they have to have an antibiotic to recover, IF that is what Duncan has.
Good Luck! Jackie, Sammy & Willie

This may be way off the track, but our female Westie would chew at her back legs when her anal glands were impacted. Just a thought. Pat - Zip & Joey & Sean's Mom

A friend told me that Missing Link made her dog worse. I'd not use it if it could be doing that...

Madison did that at the start of the winter season. She would pull big bald spots out. I took her a couple of weeks later and my groomer said she had dry skin. So I started giving her a supplement for dry skin called Lipiderm and I put a coat moisterizer on after I bath her it is like a stay on cream rinse. This did the trick.
