Tails
This might sound like a strange question, but I was wondering what other Westie tails are like. When I was bathing Glen yesterday I noticed he has a sort of thick area at the base of his tail. It's not like a tumor lump, and it's not really the bone but it is definitely a bump. I didn't notice this the first time I bathed him and the groomer didn't mention anything out of place. My husband joked that it was just muscle because he wags his tail so much. When I thought about this, it could actually be muscle. I checked Heidi and she doesn't have it. But, I thought she's a girl and her anatomy is different and while she wags her tail, it's not constant like Glen. I squeezed and prodded and it doesn't bother him. So, I was wondering if you would be so kind enough to tell me if you have westie tails like this. Glen is a little boney string bean of a pup and so I can feel all the bones in his tail anyway. Before I go running to the vets like an over anxious new Mother, I thought I would get some opinions.

Could be that he has more muscle than Heidi. Does he wag more and up on his hind legs more?? Dutchess' is thicker at the base versus Daramir. Just an individual difference.

I think it is muscle. Both Minkies have it. A Westie girl we see in the park has one and her owners call it her doughnut !!

Thanks to you both. I know it was a long post, but it just seemed a bit strange. The more I think about it, the more I'm sure it's muscle. Glen's tail never stops wagging, by 9am he has probably wagged more than Heidi does all day LOL. It's always reassuring to know that it is something that other dogs have.

Claire, that is what you call a perfect 'carrot tail'. It should be thicker at the base, just as if you attached a carrot to his rear. That was a very desired feature on terriers as when they were in a badger hole or such, the owner could lift them out by the tail to get at the quarry. Try it sometime, it works and they don't mind.
Doughnut!! Hahaha Yes, that's a good way to describe some of them Lynda, especially when they get older, they seem to add a little fat in that area, not unlike some of us hehe.

Maxwell is still very young so he has not developed anything like that his tail is the carriot shape

They still have the carrot, John...the skin we're on about is at the bottom of the carrot.

I just noticed that When Maxwell was sat up his tail looked like it was sticking out of a doughnut tehehehe

The doughnut is a perfect description, especially when you feel the area. Heidi has an absolutely perfect carrot tail, but doesn't have the doughnut. Glen's tail isn't quite a carrot yet, actually it's going to be too long. I think it's also because it's so skinny that the doughnut is so apparent.
