Open Sores Vote for this post

I noticed over the weekend that Kadee has about 20-25 sores on her belly? They don't look red or that they irritate her, but she has so many! I've got a vet appointment for this afternoon, but I've read a lot on the board that Westies and Cairns have skin problems, could this be the start of that? Although we did just put up a swimming pool and Kadee loves to swim, I'm wondering if the cholrine was a little to high for her and that's the cause??? Any ideas?

There are so many things it could be, We're thinking a yeast or staph infection. Both respond to medication very well. I always make sure the water in the Girlies pool is clean every day to elimate the possibility of infection from that source. The clorine dissapates in a few hours so I don't think that would cause any harm. I would wipe her tummy with Witch Hazel or Peroxide to give her some relief until she goes to the vet.

Sounds like it could be that irritating her. Just rinse her down when she comes out of it-that should help.

Never had any skin problems with ours and they go in the water a lot in streams Rivers Puddles etc,I would say it was the chlorine..certainly something she is going in or walking in...Will look for updates from the vets and thinking of Kadee and for positive news.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

My Cairn Terrier Duffy (who is 12 years old) has the same symptoms you are describing. She usually gets the skin irritation when the weather starts getting humid in New York (June-July), and her skin clears up again when fall starts. She started having this problem when she was about 7 years old and since then it has come back every year. The vet told us it is an allergic reaction to something in the environment. We give her baths with a special shampoo every week (Malaseb - you can get it from your vet) and this really helps a lot. Duffy doesn't have any itching or anything. It just looks nasty. I hope my comments helped you some. Good luck with Kadee!

Well its been a crazy two weeks around here! I did get Kadee to the Vet and they said she has a staph infection and put her on antibiotics for two weeks. They said the infection should go away within 2-4 weeks and since she's still showing signs of the sores, we'll have to get her another two weeks of pills. Both Kadee and Charlie have been enjoying medication time, since the only why I can get her to take the pill is with a little piece of steak. Once she's done with the medication, both dogs are going to wonder...hey what happen to our yummy snacks?
Thanks for everyone's input!
