Angel is chewing the fur...
Angel is chewing the fur between the pads of her paws. Besides that, she is pulling the fur out!
The dogtor says she doesn't have any conditions, other than just a bad habit.
Do any of your babies do this and what do you use to stop them from doing it?

Re: Angel is chewing the fur...
Have you guys had snow or freezing rain? The stuff the city puts on the streets to melt it can be very irritating to doggies feet. Also the ice melt people put on their sidewalks. I always wash my dogs feet after walking them if they've walked in that stuff.

Re: Angel is chewing the fur...
No Charleen, nothing, in fact it has been like spring or fall.
We always wash her feet in those circumstances too. We try to stop her from doing it and spray "no chew" on her feet. Spraying the "no chew" just makes her want to do it more.

Re: Angel is chewing the fur...
Be careful of what you clean the floors or carpets with. Cleaning products can be very toxic.

Re: Angel is chewing the fur...
Have you ever seen something for them to run around the house with until the floors are dry?
We usually keep her out of the areas that have been cleaned for at least two hours. My carpet cleaner uses a pretty non-abrasive cleaner, but they are never 100%. We try to wash and dry her paws after the two hours also.
Thanks.

Re: Angel is chewing the fur...
Jeanne, check in between her pads and see if she has any mats or lumps there. Sometimes a little mud will cause a mat to form and it can be painful to walk on. Casey gets them once in a while and it drives him nuts.
Just a possibility, hugs, Theo and Casey xox

Re: Angel is chewing the fur...
Could it be a yeast problem? Hannah suffers from that from time to time, and is put on Nizoral by the Vet. The Dermatologist suggested bathing and drying her feet off everytime she goes outside, but that's impossible as she goes in and out all the time.

Re: Angel is chewing the fur...
Jeanne, Willie has had allergies and we went thru all the tests. He is allergic to molds, grasses, weeds, trees, etc. After trying shots and differnt antihistimines he was put on ATOPICA--it has been a God send. We started out giving him one a day and he is now given one every five days. He is doing VERY well. Hope this helps!!

Re: Angel is chewing the fur...
Jeanne, if it is just a habit, maybe you can put some kind of covering on her paws and maybe she will outgrow it. I hope you find the reason why she is doing this.

Re: Angel is chewing the fur...
I just recently purchased Atopica for my westie and to my relief it seems to be working. My female westie has had this itching and chewing problems that just started out as a seasonal thing to itching and chewing vigorously everyday. After seeing the remarks on this topic I did some research and talked to our vet and he recommended we try it. She has been Atopica for 5 days and already her sking has gone back to a normal color, she has stopped the itching and she is not having any reactions to the medication at all. We have tried Prednisone, antihistamines, sprays, powders, etc and nothing would help her . Finally withing 5 days are prayers are being answered. Atopica dermititis seems be very prevelant in westies and this drug works great so far.
