Mars Coat King
We've been using a Mars on Duncan for 6 weeks or so now, and I have a question: can you overdo it? Does the Mars just strip dead hair or can it also pull out "live" hair? I've wondered if I should just keep combing through his coat until no more hair comes out. However, he has very little undercoat and with cool weather coming I don't want to overdo.
I know Cairns aren't supposed to need frequent bathing, but two weeks is about the most we can stand before his coat gets too smelly. Does this mean I'm not stripping enough dead fur or are there other things I could do? He does have allergies. I've switched his food to the Dick Van Patten Potato & Duck, and he gets half a Benadryl twice a day (hope I can cut back when winter comes). He had chewed his back feet raw by the time we adopted him. His feet actually have hair on them now, and he only chews his feet if I try to skip a dose of Benadryl.
That leads to another question: do any of you have experience with long-term dosages of Benadryl? Any problems that you've encountered?
Thanks for any advice.

Re: Mars Coat King
Yup you can over do it. Brush/comb the coat daily and use the coat king monthly. It's taking out the undercoat- might be a bit chilly for the winter. I dragged mine in the sand to dull the blades so it can strip more than cut hairs. And yes it can pull live hair too. Judy Young- member here- also has a yahoo westie grooming area that you can get on Few other groomers here too. In the winter I use corn starch (mine are westies soooo) to get the doggie smell out. This way their natural oils are there for protection in the winter.

Thanks!
I appreciate the info. I had been told to Mars Duncan weekly and that it would encourage growth of his undercoat, which was nonexistent when we adopted him. I don't know how long it takes for the undercoat to grow, but so far I don't see any difference. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt him to try less frequent "Marsing".

Re: Mars Coat King
We use the Mars Coat King about once a month or so, less in the winter. In between baths, which are few, we rub them down and all over with baby wipes. Pat Jeoy & Sean's Mom

Re: Mars Coat King
His coat gets oily from the allergies - that's the last symptom to clear up and the first to return. I like Gold Bond Medicated Powder - it is basically corn starch with added peppermint, which smells nice and has some herbal properties.
I personally (me) have taken Benadryl daily for over 20 years. As far as I know, I am as normal as I ever was...... (my hair did go gray though, lol)

Re: Mars Coat King
Another question...
Is there any particular care that needs to be taken with the Mars itself? I don't recall any instructions coming with it, whether it requires cleaning, oiling or sharpening etc.
thanks, TCL

Re: Mars Coat King
Hey Casey! Nah you want it dull to strip and not cut the hair. You know the blue liquid to clean the blades? That's what I use to clean the coat king. Just sit it in there rinse and dry :0 If I'm suppose to do something more OPPS! LOL!!!!

Hey, thanks Nancy. I'll have to pick up some of the cleaner. Lance enjoys it, Casey hides when he sees it or a brush in my hand LOL

Re: Mars Coat King
What a angels I have they like to get brushed and they don't mind the Mars Coat King at all . I do it once a month and you line it up with the way the hair grows.Levi has such thick hair it is harder to do him. If I was you I skip a few weeks. Mine also get a bath every 2 or 3 weeks. Levi had allergies and now that he is on Natural Balance and heathy snacks he is doing great. Hugs Moshe,Levi & Yoka
