Anal Gland Leaking? Vote for this post

Anyone have any idea why anal gland leaking? This is the second time happened to my westie (2 1/2 years old). The dogtor could not tell me specifically why and he gave antibiotic for 10 days. It was stop after almost a month and now it happening again. I have to clean every 3-4 hours eventhough only a small drop but the smell is teribble. He seems doesnt have problem though and he did not scrubing too like when their gland is full.

Anyone has experience this problem?

Thanks

Yep!
Katy's glands need to be expressed periodically - The vet taught me how to do it.  The problem can come from many things - not enough fiber in the diet to a food allergy.  The antiobiotic can rid of an infection, but won't stop the problem from happening.  Feed your pup some pumpkin for more fiber it that is the problem, or ask the vet to teach you how to express the glands.  Katy can go without me expressing her for a month - lately I have had to do it every few days - and they have been full.  Good-luck!

I am going to ask my vet to teach how to express. He just starting his hypoallergenic food 10 days ago and the leaking started 3 days ago. It might be soy protein in food? I understand that corn, soy and wheat are not good for westie. But its prescription hypoallergenic food from his vet.

Katy was on Hills Prescription Ultra ZD (I think - it has been a few years).  I will give you my opinion on that food - a lot of chemicals are in that food - check to see if ethyoxiquin (sp?) is in it.  It is a preservative that is known to cause cancer.  Katy is on a holistic food and is doing well on it - we had pretty much tried everything - she had an icky tummy for her first year of life - no normal BM's.  Now she is "normal" (as normal as she can be :).

There are a lot of foods out there now for dogs with allergies that are really healthy.  Katy ate Nature's Variety for awhile and also Flint River Ranch and now we are on Sojo's Grain Free it is a dehydrated product that you add your own meat source to.

Try to check out www.dogfoodanalysis.com for food if you are interested in changing it.  I know that when we changed our mind about the RX food the vet acted like we were not doing what was best for our dog - we changed vets shortly after - and now I question things - Katy has some skin issues that our old vet just put us on antibiotics for - our new holistic vet has treated the cause - not just the symptoms - just special shampoo and a new topical fatty acid supplement.

I hope some of this information is beneficial - feel free to post again (or even join!)  This is a great club and people are very friendly and helpful!

This happens to Maisey from time to time. When it was happening a lot, it was due to the type of food she was on. The food was causing her to have very soft stools. When the stools are too soft, it doesn't push against those glands to express them naturally while the dog is having a bowel movement. Once I switched her food to high quality food, her stools improved, and this happens less frequently.

But I know that smell, and it is beyond awful.

Right now, she's on Now! Natural Grain-Free. She has done very well on this food, and the price isn't bad. Around $17 for a 6lb. bag.

Is that California Natural? Do you have their website? I guess eventhough the food from the vet does not mean is good for my Charlie, otherwise he wont has this problem.

Sometimes that do need to be expressed if there is a infection.
My vet told me the more you express these glands the more you need to do it.
A good high fiber diet is the best so nature can do this job for you.
