Noise
Hello,
Monty is my first Cairn Terrier. My topic is noise. Do any other Cairn or Westie suffer from noise fright? Cant think what else to call it.
Jets, ladders, crows, seagulls, tractors, lorries.
Do any other Terriers suffer from this? If so, how do you cope with it? How do you get your Terrier to stop barking at noisey things? Or even to control the barking?
Any help much appreciated

Re: Noise
How old is the dog? My Westie is almost 6 and I haven't found anything yet that stops the sudden barking at anything that startles her or she sees at different. When she was a pup she barked for 2 days straight in the back yard. I finally figured out it was the neighbors garbage can. Every time they hang up a new flag she barks at that. I just learned to talk to her tell her it's okay and worked with a no bark command. My trainer told me to spray bitter apple in her mouth. I only had to spray it around her once and to this day every time she sees the bottle she stops barking. Oh, and she goes wild with vaccums and motorcycles.

Re: Noise
Sounds like Monty is just being a terrier! They bark at anything and everything--I've said that Kelsie will bark at the wind blowing at times. It's not exactly that she's startled, just nosy. LOL

Re: Noise
If he's barking you can try to stop the behavior with a behavior modification method like Grace's mom mentioned. You can shake pennies in a small Coke can or clicker train or try to redirect his attention. The only thing that ever worked with Mishy was to bribe her with people food. Open the fridge and she'd coming running, even after she was very old and deaf. Col Potter Cairn Rescue Network sells an ultrasonic trainer which can be used to modify your terrier's behavior. http://mall.cairnrescue.com/mdse/show_item.php?itemno=G12

Re: Noise
Hmm, sounds like Monty is a terrier in good standing. If he is young he'll probably just get over the fright. We have to wear bark collars when mom is not home to control our barking, (The neighbor, a city cop, complained). However, I Fiona, tough girl, have learned to take the six shocks knowing that the collar turns itself off for 10 minutes. Buster is very repectful of his bark collar, it works well for him. Remember, we are born to bark - literally. You'll get used to it. We are 5 and 3 now and do bark less. Just think of it as an over-active alarm system. No evil-doers will get in the house with Monty on guard. Doesn't that give you peace of mind? heehee!
