Puppy class
Has anyone else had trouble with a Cairn in a group puppy class? Fergus is almost 7 months old -we just finished 5 weeks of a basic manners puppy class. He started out great - quiet, paying attention, and the last 2 classes he has gone completely backwards -acting like the worst dog in the class -not paying attention at all, barking at other dogs and people, watching everyone but what we're supposed to be doing, and treats that I train him with outside of class that he usually eats right up, in class he could care less for them. It's frustrating -his trainer seems to indicate it's normal, but I'm just looking for some verification of this. He does pretty well if we are alone on a quiet walk, but then gets distracted easily if we happen to see another dog, or a person, or a lawn mower, etc

Re: Puppy class
Sounds like a terrier...Katy is 6 now and a great dog, but is also a barker when it comes to other dogs...she is also one of the only dogs I know that doesn't like walks. Well actually walks in her own neighborhood. She is fine when we drive to a different area and then walk but if we go from our house she walks stops and sits on the sidewalk. Such an attitude! Sorry I don't have any tips or anything, but I wanted you to know that you are not alone with the behaviors...as they get older it does get better!

Re: Puppy class
Very typical!!! I went thru much the same with my Kayla. You may need to up the value of the treats - he's gotten used to them. Kayla began to get the idea of what she was to do at about 18 months. She now 12 years old and still get distracted if she see a bunny or other critter. Just a terrier thing!

Re: Puppy class
Cathy, sounds like typical terrier behavior to me! Kelsie is smart as a whip but behaves when she pleases and I hate to say it, but she has the attention span of a gnat at times! LOL Love, Deb and Kelsie

Re: Puppy class
Sounds like my Westie Caesar. When I adopted him I took him to doggie obedience school. He would bark at the other dogs and disrupt the class. The trainer just whipped out a a squirt bottle with water in it and would squirt Caesar in the face and say "no" whenever he disrupted the class. That took care of that problem. Now all I have to say is Caesar I'm going to get the squirt bottle and he stops misbehaving! This is typical terrier behavior. Louise

He is still young yet and everything is new and fun..My Old Cairn Eric was a real monkey and a should I say demanding boy but such a character..he was fine till 2 years then he found his paws so to speak and would challenge and want to domineer and be a real boy...which is what I loved about him...fearless and tough and so much fun...He was My Best friend ever...we did so many things together I Loved him so much and he lives on around me I know somewhere...He went to Rainbow Bridge in 2004 one week before his 17th birthday.Love and kisses xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
