a pumice stone for grooming

I have searched pet shops within driving range, the web, email addresses posted in Dogs in Canada, and CAN NOT FIND a place to sell me a pumice stone to groom with. When Jesse & I first came together, my breeder Russ gave me a pumice stone & showed me how. Its Great! But.....Jesse stole it on me & hid it!!! I have been searching for months to find another. Thanx for any help!

I've never heard of grooming a dog with one of those. Try the local chemist if it's the same type you use on your feet...

The pumice that people use is softer & crumbly. Believe me, it works beautifully. Now if I can just find another.

Try your local feed or tack store. I know they are used to groom horses, so they should have them.

Thanx! That will be my next stop. In fact I have a good friend with horses, so can on to her right away.

Can you tell me more about the pumice stone? Is it in dark gray colour and is used to catch loose hair? Cutey is changing coat in this spring time and has quite a lot of loose hair. His groomer showed me one kind of stone to brush him every day. If it is the case I can get one for you. I am living in British Columbia.

YES!!! it is sorta dark gray and coarse feeling & it works beautifully to remove hair ends. My Jess is wheaten in colour & when I groom with the pumice, the red shows more & more. I love it! & he will sit much longer for pumicing than for combing & brushing.
That would be marvellous!
I will email you!

I've marked down your name & will send along a reply to you when I think I've put it into understandable form. OK?
Believe me this pumice are very hard to find. Even the suppliers in the Dog in Canada book - at least the ones I contacted hadn't heard of it.

We had a holiday in St Lucia last month and the beaches were covered in pumice stone!!! Wish I had known it was good for grooming. Just tell us how? Curious

OK! I'll try. My pumice was given to me by Jesse's breeder & he showed us how.
With pumice in hand, I just keep using the thumb against the pumice & work my way down his back & then horizontally as well. I clean up the length of his hair on top of his head, its basically pulling out but just the dead ends then the under colour shows a lot more.
Can tidy up his britches & belly. Haven't perfected the legs & of course have to use scissors to do moustache & feet.
The only thing it is an on-going job, I usually spent a few minutes each day but it was a loving bonding experience for both of us I think.

Skylar's foster mom showed me how to groom her with a stone. Her stone worked best, but she got them from the handlers that show her dogs. She didn't pick up on any of my hints that I would like to get some!! I did find some that work fairly well from Valley Vet and they are actually used to groom horses. The stones work best on Skylar's wiry coat. They work so so on Skeeter's soft coat and do very poorly on Smidgen's coarse coat. I would love to find a source for pumice if that works even better. If anybody has a name or even a picture of it...I bet we can find it online!! The name of the grooming blocks I have used are Slick N Easy Horse Grooming Blocks. www.valleyvet.com

Human ladies use pumice stones for foot grooming---- great for calluses, especially on the heels. Go to any drug store to the foot care Department. Dr. Scholl's still makes them---- a little fancy, but you can still purchase plain old pumice stones!!!

:)!!!

Ask Faith and Pheonix's mom, Eve... she told me about this a loooooooooooong time ago... go to a drug store and buy one of those hand held kind you use on YOUR heels/feet... they even have a little thumb indention. It works wonders!! I went and actually bought a stripping stone at a horse store and while it too worked, it turned Chance a dingy gray - which was the color of the stone. :(

You said it all Angie. I have used this on Faith and Phoenix both.
It's best used outside if you can as it does get a lot of dead hair off.
I have both the grey and the one people use on the feet and they both work, but with the grey one you have to brush a lot after you use it to get all the grey off the coat.
All I do is run this over the hair in short strokes.
