A Call to Action

Ok, you have seen the cute pictures of Rufus now that he is in his forever (wonderful) home.

However, listed below is his story. We MUST do something to let these people know how we feel and how others feel about this disgusting event. Fortunately for Rufus, he has been saved (in great part due to Kim's efforts I understand).

However, please read this very LONG message and do what we do here best. Get behind this project, write, call, FAX, e-mail, cross-post--whatever you have to do to let these people know that we know what they did and how disgusting this type of behavior is.

From here on is taken from an e-mail I received:

This is an update on the auction in Omaha this past Saturday, June 7. Even
though hundreds, if not thousands, of letters and emails were sent and phone
calls made to try and prevent this auction, it was held as planned.

I do not know "who" authored this letter, I received it from a second party who had already removed the ID of the author. And, I don't believe it would
help to include the posting info. for that party either. I have no doubt that all of this is true and it IS an eyewitness accounting of the auction
proceedings.

Please, if you didn't send an email or letter or call prior to this auction, please do so now.

You will see a list of the NCAS's MAJOR contributors here:
http://www.ncas-ncc.org/whoswho.htm#CONTRIBUTOR

Feel free to also let them know what you think about this auction. And below are contacts for NCAS and Tully's (the large scale breeding kennel that
provided the puppies).

Thanks so much.

Subject: Auction update

Here is the letter I received about the auction. While it does not
specifically mention the hundreds, perhaps thousands of people who wrote or
called Ms. Socha, I was copied on many of your emails and posts and feel the
same outrage. I will try to follow up on the older puppy and offer him
rescue. This is a perfect example of why this should not happen. This story
was broadcast on our local news last Friday night also. It was our local
humane society speaking out on why it was a bad idea and promoting
responsible pet ownership. Your calls and emails got this story into the
public's eyes. Please continue to raise your voices in support of the animals
who cannot speak for themselves.

**********************
(THIS IS THE EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTING AND I DO NOT KNOW WHO AUTHORED THIS.
Patty):

It is with regret that I inform you that the Nebraska Choral Arts Society
(NCAS), despite expressed public outrage and public outcry, auctioned off two

Tully's Kennels puppies at their Saturday, June 7, 2003 VOCE! Fundraiser.

Each puppy was presented for auction with a starting bid of $1,000. Although

the two puppies were both Golden Retrievers, one puppy was 12 weeks old,
while the other was less than 8 weeks old. The bidding for the smaller,
younger puppy ended with a $6,000 bill. However, when the bidding opened for
the 12-week-old puppy, no one would accept the bid. A staunch supporter of
the NCAS finally agreed to take the puppy for $275, a far lower cost than
Tully's would accept at their store. It is my opinion that the NCAS
supporter, who finally took the puppy, did so in an effort to ensure the
puppy would not go unsold and to proceed quickly to the next auction item.
This was an unplanned purchase and therefore contradicts the NCAS's claim
that the auction was manipulated to ensure that each puppy was assigned a
home prior to bidding. We have no way of knowing whether or not this puppy,
who was unwanted by so many, will be given a warm, loving home.

The NCAS supporter who purchased the puppy is the father of a NCAS children's

choir member. Unfortunately, through this event, over 50 youth were taught
that such events are commonplace and ethically accomplished.

Consequently, when the transaction was complete, the puppy was transported to

the 17th story of the First National Bank of Omaha Tower, where the NCAS
children choir and adult choirs were gathered. The puppy was given to the
purchaser's child and then subjected to a constant barrage of young, excited
hands and loud voices. It was at this time that members of the adult choir
began vocalizing their disgust at the auction. When the youngster was asked
what he would do with the puppy when it was his turn to sing, he pointed to a
young girl in the room and said, "She can take care of him." Again, members
of the adult choir questioned the use of puppies in an auction.

I am dismayed that the NCAS executive board chose to proceed with this
auction, deliberately dismissing the wishes of the Omaha public.
Additionally, I am shocked that the NCAS blatantly ignored the members of
Hearts United for Animals and the Nebraska Humane Society who vocalized their
disgust. My hope is that the bidders who purchased puppies at this event
will commit themselves to the care that these animals need and deserve. As
this is the third year the NCAS has offered puppies at their fundraiser, I am
committed to stopping this from happening again next year.

Well this cannot be about Rufus--since he is a Westie. He was auctioned off at a charity function. Act anyway and tell them how disgusting this is.

Kim, can you fill in the blanks here?

I just cannot believe that organizations are stooping so low. That is like auctioning off one of your kids! I will definitely let them know how I feel about this.
